Hey everyone :)!

Well as some of you may or may not know, I am currently working on my bachelor's degree in video gaming design and development. I am one of a few students in my class that is not too savvy when it comes to programs like photoshop and illustrator. Can anyone post any links, information or videos of some basic photoshop tutorials that you think would be the most helpful? Thanks in advance!

I am using windows OS. My teacher said whatever I did on my OS I would be able to transfer on the mac computer in the lab.

Reya, I don't wanna sound like a dick, but you can usually find that kind of stuff on youtube :O

To be honest I'm not all that great in photoshop myself, but that's my go to place for tutorials on things I'm not all that familiar with.

I was searching on youtube last night for some. Guess I was hoping for something non-youtubeish so I can study the stuff when I have some downtime in the office. Youtube is blocked here :(

Aww that sucks. Try video.google.com?

Otherwise you may need to pick up a book. I honestly don't know any reputable sites that host videos other than the two I've now mentioned. Maybe Adobe has some videos for you to watch? I know apple has some videos related to making apps, maybe adobe follows the same model.

I'll check that out :) Thanks Shome!

Youtube is a great place to find some information about how to do things in these programs. Since it's blocked, I'd recommend going to Adobe's Community Help portion of it's website. You can find out about using the Community Help here: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/CommunityHelp/ Other than that, you can find a lot of different graphic sites that offer tutorials on how to do certain things in these programs. The best way to really learn the program is to play around in it. It's much easier to search for techniques once you get familiar with the software and know what exactly you want to do with them. Good luck!

One of the best things I can suggest, is get comfortable with the program. start remembering where things are. Once you got that down you'll start flying through everything else. Anytime I want to try to learn something different, I usually check out this site: http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Photoshop/1 to get an idea of how others figured out certain techniques. Tutorialized has tutorials for other programs as well.

It's good practice. always take note of what version of photoshop that person made the tutorial in though, sometimes terms change or move from the menu's mentioned originally and takes a little extra effort to find.

this might also be handy: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/02/10/photoshop-keyboard-shortcuts-cheat-sheet-pdf/

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ is also good for articles and some freebie downloads on occasion. worth checking out.

You can always search for tutorials on http://www.deviantart.com/ some are really good, and if they are an image, you can just save them and have a visual of step by step process.

As mentioned, youtube is also useful, I like watching people speedpaint. crazy stuff.

Saving often and .psd files are your friend. so is setting things at 300 DPI+ (anything you feel might been to be sent to a printer at some point it makes the image huge though so its not practical for basic stuff) If your doing projects 100% in Illustrator, thats less of a concern because its vector, but in photoshop it can be tricky.

Try to keep your .psd files, everything in layers. they do eat up comp space, but rather that then having to start all over on a project. naming the layers is also a good idea. i'm guilty, i never do. not unless i know i'm handing the project off to someone who would need it that way. If you haven't yet, you'll be able to import photoshop stuff you make into illustrator and the other way around, its pretty useful.

basically by doing all of that stuff you make it easier on yourself later on. specially if someone asks for changes. If I think of anything else that might be useful i'll let you know! Good luck on your classes, gaming design/dev sounds like it would be fun!

Thanks a lot! I have a bunch of sketches I want to scan in and play around with this week! :)
