Seen the heat turned up on a post about bots on Alla, figured to start our own sparring match.

Do you find the use of fishing bots acceptable?
Please elaborate your opinion.

For the record, if you are an actual bot user, please do not admit to it on here, kinda self-explanatory, but figured to mention it anyway. For everyone else, just because someone may make a case that bots are ok, that doesn't mean that the person is really using a bot, so hold your horses please.

Discuss!

Im alright with bots just for the skillup factor. When theyre used for gil farming, i have a problem with it because if more and more ppl use it, theres the potential risk of a screwed up the economy. Oh yea....it is possible, very possible. Ive seen economies go to hell and back in EQ from just a bug that lasted a day for cash and whatnot. But anyway, back on topic, no bot out there, at least non-japanese that i know of, are able to autosort. So ur stuck with maybe a stack or two at most, that ur inventory can hold. So all a bot is really really good for atm are skillups. If SQUARE-ENIX really wants to put a stop to it, then they need to do something about it themselves. When ppl find loopholes and whatnot, more power to them.

If you don't put the time in to play, you don't appreciate the gil you have. Also, you screw up the economy for others by flooding the market with items. Why not make a bot to form parties, skillchain, and do quests and missions for you too?

They probably have skillchain bots, lol, well not sure how it is in FFXI, in EQ just about everything could be automated.

As far as economy goes, mass botting could certainly have an impact. I have looked into moat carp prices in Windurst for cooking (wind crystal + moat carp, trivial at skill 17), and found some 180+ stacks for sale at 4k a stack. Not sure what prices used to be, but even though there is a large supply, no one is selling for less than 4k.

I wonder if the issue with bots is less the automation part than the unattended automation. I also tend to agree with Pseulen on the skill-up part.

Im against botting, its just cheap to me. You do absolutely no work yet reap a reward? Im sorry, why not just go buy gil and shortcut everything so you can get the items you want?

In short youre like people who choose to rob banks instead of getting a J-O-B, maximum reward minimal effort.

/rant off =P

And THATS the american way!

Anyway, like i said before, no bot autosorts at this point in time. So the "reward" wont be all that high. ull be releasing everything u catch. The sole purpose would be to skillup. Now the only reason im for that is because fishing takes insanely long for one cast. Wait 6 game minutes then recast, pull in, wait 6, recast, repeat. It takes awfully long that not everyone has the time for. AA typical excuse, but those of us who do have "J-O-B"'s cant really dedicate that much time to the game and expect to get very far in our characters development, at least not nearly as fast as we should be. Being left behind when quests, items, expansions, patches, etc. are constantly changing makes the game become very frustrating very quickly. When the rest of your linkshell is out doing misson this, or that quest, or taking down so-and-so NM, and ur not able to participate, ull find urself wondering why u bought the game. This is an extreme example, but a LOT of time DOES go into tradeskills.

Here is my rant from a popular fishing bot webpage.

BotCatcherCatcher on The Real World
June 9, 2004

I think some people truly need to come to terms with what exactly they are enjoying when they play a game like FFXI. If you have time to actively search out people you think are using bots, just so you can get off over the fact that their account has been suspended, then why are you doing it in a GAME that you pay for? I'm real sorry that I some of us have to work full time jobs, and we already pay premium dollars for minimal game time. If have a bot that fishes for us when we are working - this ONLY bring our time commitment closer to hardcore players and other players who do not work? AND ECONOMY. In a real economy, scarcity controls the prices with supply & demand. In FFXI, scarcity is non-existant in the long term (since time is the only real limit). So then - if there is no limit to the supply of fish, it cannot be considered a scarce resource - thus whether there is no fish, or millions caught there will always be more to catch. In the long run, then, there is unlimited supply and unlimited demand by NPCs - which makes fishing only a cash influx. And from what I remember from economics and global news is that more money flowing through an economy makes it stronger! So ha!

I Think Bots are BS! I mean If you want to be a fisher, you have to put in the time to be a good one! It's a skill just like Clothcraft/cooking/smithing/alchemy etc and because of that you should have to pay your dues to level that skill and not have some cheesy bot doing it for you. I WISH i had a bot that could pull items like yaggy necklaces/cotton/silk etc out of a lake so it was so bloody painful to level my clothcraft but I don't. I have to take the time, head out to giddeous and do it myself. Even if i wasn't making money off the items I was grabbing, just the benefit in having higher level skills with the use of a bot is incredibly biased against all the other players who took the time (as boring as it may be) to actually level their skills the old fashion (and proper) way. Square Enix designed the game to played a certain way and if you don't want to play it that way - go play another game and stop messing it up for everyone else! Hell I work full time, have commitments to friends and you know that ball of gas in the sky we call the sun. Since October 31st (when i started the game) my highest level character is only 32 and I only have 22 days clocked on the game and currently have NO cash due to a lack of time required to farm, but that's just the way it goes. You'll progress through the game eventually, just a lot slower than everyone else.

Cheating is cheating no matter how hard you try to justify it, and cheating always ends up giving you a completely unfair advantage over players who are abiding by the rules, making it a more unpleasent experience for everyone but yourself.

I'd rather not stir up too much more about this subject, but it's been on my mind lately and I think that I've come up with a workable analogy on the topic.

In the most simplistic sense, a bot in the game takes care of what are ridiculously repetetive tasks while you concentrate on other things while still recieving the benefit of your work. This angers those that have spent the time doing something that someone else expends less effort to do (ie: fishing).

Here comes the analogy: Think back a few years when people did not have dishwashers, clothes washing machina, cars, grain harvesters,.., etc. These machines were invented to perform the repetition while people concentrated on other things. All-in-all this made our economy bigger and allowed for more fun things to be done in our free time. Of course, those who could not afford machina, or did not have the technical competance/patience to work them kept complaining that they had to do everything the manual way.

Well, welcome to the Industrial Revolution Square. Sure, perhaps we should be washing all our clothes and dishes by hand because that's the was that life was meant to be lived. But if we can at least speed up these chores and concentrate on helping others in our real time, are the machines really that bad.

Ok, sorry for the deep post, but I think that if FFXI is to be a true persistant online world, then a little creativity and invention should not be quashed because somebody believes things should be a certain way and that doing them any other way is called "cheating".

---truly a one-sided argument, but I am a programmer and it makes me happy to know that if I wanted to, I could use REAL-WORLD skills in a controlled game---

dbl post...=p....anyway, i kinda liked that analogy...LOL...i suppose its a good one, but i dunno if ppl will buy it.l Ehe...technically, SOME of us, not all, but some of us dont just use a bot and benefit for nothing. A lot of us using bots actually tweak whats there and improve bots and all of us are on that everfailing mission to get autosort to work...lol. We share our advancements with a certain community and continue working diligently to aid others with an improved script. Lol, i spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out a different way to autsort than mkaing the cursor go up one more time which SHOULD work, but i have no idea why it doesnt. Anyway...bots take a lot of work in reality, in RL time. So were not just punks benefitting from a free script...were working hard together to make one.

I was thinking of building a full text parser script to tie in with a bot of sorts. What is lacking right now is interaction with the system console. A proper bot should be reading the console log files and working with that. For example, the bot should be able to understand simple /tell, /linkshell messages and generate a probable response based on a simple text parser.
A parser like this already exists for tracking your stats as you play by examining the logfiles in real time. Another practical excercise.

You guys are walking a fine line ... ;)
One of the things I as the owner of this board had to agree on to become an FFXI Community Site is to not promote or aid to promte any kind of 3rd party software.

Having said that, as long as you keep it to a technical conceptual discussion it is all good, don't post code here or link to code or executables, that's what PMs are for if nothing else.

<----Is secretly a new fishing-bot prototype.
Does everything you'd want a fishing bot to do...except....fish.

i have an autosort bot. i don't know why i have it....i don't know when i got it. i can't even remember WHY i would get it. I rarely fish.. but there it goes every 5-10 sort... I've only turned it on once. =P

<-- is so dumb.

In response to the Autosort, there are currently bots that autosort and even drop specific items such as Rusty Leggings from your Inventory. On another note, most botters concentrate their efforts in Moat Carps which will always be bought by the high end botters to get more Lu Shangs Rods, to bot high end fish that only sell to the Guild or NPCs. Anyways, for the first type of botter, if you want to benefit from their use of bots, raise your cooking to the point where you can make Insect Paste. Problem solved. You can stop crying about botters when they're buying 9K worth of paste off you every day sometimes more. Even those botters that are high enough to make their own paste are lazy.

Actuallly I believe it would be more work to rob a bank and alot more stressfull. All that planning and changeing your appearnce. Plus you proably would not get away with it. Nah, I think I would be lazy and get a job :D . Seriously I have seen some people I know get banned or kicked out of game for useing a fishing bot so I assume Square is doing something. Fishing is boring to me so I see why useing a bot appeals to people.

I personally take no issue with attended botting. Its when you arnt at your PC that I have a problem.

Fishing Bots: I dont know if any of you have ever fished before, but its tedious. Its not because its slow or boring, but its mostly because of the repeated and unneeded button presses. There is no reason, in my mind, that it shouldnt be a more automatic thing. Typing /fish 5 times only to be told that I have to wait longer to try again is silly, and if someone chooses to sit back and watch a bot work it for them, then I take no issue.

Provoke Bots (for NM): Face it. We have a disadvantage when trying to provoke NMs that spawn. The japanese have a better ping time, and many of them are bots (which is even worse). Using a provoke bot to 'even the odds' is pretty acceptable in my eyes. At least this way, you have a chance to get your item.

Its when you start running bots while you are at work or sleeping that you have a problem. This game, as all MMORPGs are, is a Time/Reward game. If you dont have the time, you dont get the rewards. If you feel the need to use bots to try and catch up to the players who have more free time... you end up getting reward without putting in the time. If this is you, why do you even play? You just removed over 1/2 of the game's 'content' by circonventing it with a bot. This is time you should spend working on your character.

I dunno, I guess my arguement isnt very sound, but its what I believe.

I agree with the auto-voke bots reasoning keits. Im used to camp-rights. you camped it for some 12 hours, u have rights to the spawn. In FFXI, there is a lack of GM intervention between players and theres KSing to unholy hell. Granted, theres no real rule set aside that says you cant do it, but its proper etiquette and consideration. if someone used the bot to mosy in on some JP players camp and voked it right from under his nose, then thats just as bad. I really wish camping rights were issued to a certain degree in this game.
