I don't think that the creator of a flameboard topic should have the rights to have his/her topic closed. I think the only causes for closing a thread in the flameboard should be A) the issue was resolved or B) the thread broke some rules. The reason I think that topic creators shouldn't be able to petition a flame closed is thus: Someone makes a stupid flame on another, and it backfires, and their thread turns on them. The poster should have to suffer the consequences. It's a risk of the territory. I don't think posting on the flameboards should be as risk free to the accuser as it can be right now. What I ask, is if the topic creator petitions staff to have a thread closed, look at why. If you see that his/her thread turned on him, then say tough luck and move on. If the issue between the two parties has been resolved, then sure, close the topic if need be. That's my two cents. Noone should be able to hide from their stupidity, when it should arise.

While what you say i totally agree with, i have a feeling that the response will be something along the lines of, "If you want to keep the discussion going, just make a new thread about it so you will be the creator and won't need us to lock it."

It was that way with the flame board before Sculli banished it. I also don't really like the use of the edit button on the flame board, but that is a different discussion completly.

a lot of the time, topics get derailed, and this causes for the topic to be locked... Because people dont stay ON topic.

But if its on the topic, and its locked cuz the OP is butt hurt... Yeah thats kinda dumb

I just double-checked the FB guidelines, and I made a mistake. There is no rule in there about derails, nor is there a rule about locking per the OP's request. It's been done in the past and that was my reasoning for doing it to BBT's thread.

I'd like to hear from some other mods with their thoughts on this, if we should or shouldn't lock at the request of the OP.

I think mods should use their judgment...

If its cuz like Ruffy said, the OP is getting all butt hurt, then don't lock the topic.

If its cuz everyone is derailing the thread, then its very reasonable.

Yeah, no worries Cmdrfly - this is more a suggestion for the future than a criticism of the past.

But then you're locking because of the derail.

If they just want it locked because they're getting pounded for being an idiot, let them roast. People forget that if you simply stop posting in the thread, it goes away.

Going to have to agree with pomp here, unless it starts getting into their personal life and stuff is getting exposed (RL Wise) That they don't want said - I say leave it. Why have a flameboard if every jack ass can have their topics locked at request? It's risky to post on the FB and should stay like that.

Not true! Ive posted some dumb FB topics that I let roast, and they didnt go away until there were like... 8+ pages of posts. Topics that I didnt even reply to after making, lol

How about we take out that edit button first?
I'm sure Reeve will get right on that, it's only been asked for since... when was the FB put back up? Maybe get rid of the template usage spam while he's at it.... oh hell, who am I kidding...

Discussion underway on the mod forum.

OP should be allowed to request a topic locking if the flame subject is resolved on or off the board, not just because they want to.

Yeah, I so didn't notice that...lol

That was a link? *dies*

A bit off-topic, and something I know will never be formalized into a rule -- I'm personally getting a little sick of people acting like they can influence a moderator to lock a thread via some sort of voting process inside the same thread. When the issue is clearly resolved and the whole mess has derailed into 4chan meme gibberish, that's one thing. When people just plain don't like the topic at hand, however, and don't really point out any broken rule ...

Well, I'll just say that from my point of view, in the hiearchy of post categories ... a "lock this shit" one-liner ranks somewhere below a Caturday picture, and slightly above a spambot. Whether or not others should still retain the right to post in any given thread isn't up to these people.

I'm of the mind that any and all threads that aren't necroed, derailed, illegal, or sockpuppeted should be allowed to die a natural death, however ... I'm a bit of an extremist in that regard. I don't care WHO thinks the initial conflict is "over." If someone else doesn't agree, let 'em keep posting.

At the very least, I agree with the premise of the original post ... weeks ago as it was.
