I was thinking on all of the occurances of: "Can you ban user X please?", and I had an idea. In every thread, the solution turns out to be: "Use the ignore feature, because we can't ban for no reason." I wonder if there are any vBulletin hacks for giving the staff the power to force ignore status on a user. I'll illustrate with a phoney example using myself and a friend.

Propagandhi: "Damn, that Pompidou is a noob. Can't we ban him? If I wanted to hear from an asshole, I'd fart."

Arc: "I'm sorry, you'll have to put Pompidou on ignore. He causes lots of problems, but hasn't actually broken any rules yet."

Propagandhi: "But I don't want to."

Miros: "We've been forced to put Pompidou on your ignore list, and you haven't the power to remove him from it. Thus spake the staff of QCDN."

Heck, it could even be more subtle than that. Solve problems between members like a ninja, stealthily adding users to other users' ignore lists so that they don't see any future problems.

I know vBulletin.org has a hack for adding a problem user to everyone's ignore list, giving the user the illusion of not being banned, but really not existing in any real sense, but I haven't seen one that works the other way. I'm sure if the former exists the latter is possible. It just seems reasonable to prevent problems before they occur.

I think that's a pretty good idea actually. But at the same time, maybe the person doesn't want to have them on ignore, because they think they may posts bad things about them. So they keep them off ignore to reply to it.

And that's the problem.

Honestly, I'd like to see this more.

Here's a link to a hack of my proposal:
Force a user to ignore someone

Here's a link to the hack I mentioned that Xalioniaf was interested in. Though, I could've sworn I saw a 3.x version, this is the closest a search brought up. I was looking for hacks for my ls forums and came across this, but my boards are 3.7, so I dunno why I came across 2.x stuff. But here it is. I'm sure it can be ported if anyone cares.
Put a user on everyone's ignore list

While i think this is a good idea in concept, in the end it really does nothing. Person X doesn't want to use the ignore feature to ignore someone and would rather get an outright ban. If we force the ignore on them, unless the hack prevents the user from taking that person off ignore (which i don't see it doing), we will be back at square one when person X takes person Y off ignore, and wants a ban again.

More on point, however, if you can't (or refuse to) operate the very simple and effective features the site gives you, you will probably be told to deal with it.

If we use the mod I linked to, the only solution a targeted member would have to read posts by his enemy is to log out and view the forums as a guest. This of course, would have limitations, most notably the flameboard, which doesn't appear to guests.

One problem they would know something up because to my knowledge unless it been changed you will still see a person post if it been quoted.

True, it isn't perfect. Though, it'll force people to have to take extraordinary measures to persist fighting with each other, and if they do that, they'll likely open themselves up to real discipline (by that I mean, if they're so intent on squaring off, it's unlikely they'll follow the rules after bypassing so many safeguards to do so), and further actions can be taken. What the suggestion is meant to do is give two people a forced cool-down period. If the only posts by the other involved person seen are via quotes, that'll still trim off a lot of potential fighting.

On a side note, there's a complimentary hack that prevents ignored users from posting in topics started by the ignorer. Next time I'm on vBulletin.org I'll look it up, if anyone cares. If we get rid of all the rampant feuding, the feuds that extend to every board on the site, it'll free people up to deal with other issues, or talk about the actual thread topics.

If you guys locate this hack, please post the URL. Thanks. I would also love to have this.

Hack for "If you ignore someone and start a thread, the ignored user can't post in it":

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=181315&highlight=ignore

I haven't found 3.7 versions of the two hacks I posted earlier as proof that the concept is possible. The Forced Ignore hack is at least 3.X, so it stands a chance of working. I don't think the 2.X Ignored by all hack will be so lucky.

Constructive Feedback:

it definitely requires this tone:

While a good idea in some regards, I think that people refusing to use the ignore feature would be upset with it forced upon them. Also, it might cause a rise in the rate of sock puppets? So those who let curiosity get the better of them, can see what the Y's who are ignored are saying.. etc. Although I doubt a few of the more notorious trolls would be missed by many.

You can.

I think that is possible.
This is really a good idea Pomp.
I agree, and I'm glad someone else see's the problem with the "BAN HIM, HE SUCKZ!!1!" threads. They are blatant flamebaiting everytime, no matter how nice the words in the OP seem. I think they should just be handled as severe flamebaiting; delete the post/thread and issue an infraction or even read only or a ban. There is never any productive conversation in them, mostly "everyone hates username, so they shouldn't get to use the forum" and "use the ignore feature" and "no u!!!"

"no u!!!"
no, u.

in all seriousness, i'm all for this capability. it's the perfect remedy to threads like what was posted the other day concerning jyakotsu or whoever was in a pissing match with diabllos (example boys, not singling you out).

Global ignore feature is on, and it should be used. If you don't like it, or don't want to use it, Mods *should* reserve the right to force it upon you, because they can't, won't, and should not ban on arbitrary reasons such as "nobody likes this person" (which, 90% of the time, translates to "I really don't like this person").

I'm mixed on this to be honest. I know certain users would not be thrilled if we were to force them to ignore users that they commonly disagree with or exchange in extensive baiting. But on the other hand it would allow make them ignore them instead of beg for them to be banned.

I was looking at a comprehensive ignore system earlier on that would allow a person to fully ignore a person, ignore a forum, ignore a thread all through the userCP. Mods and Admins could even look at the persons ignore list and modify it which could be considered forced ignore. I'm pushing more towards that. Right now, since things are absolutely batshit crazy in life for both Arc and myself, I know I'm trying to focus on one issue at a time, so please feel free to keep this discussion going. I'll probably post my project list here so people can see what I would like to work on.

batshit crazy
Title Change GO.

The comprehensive ignore system you mentioned is badass. The ability to bypass an entire forum via the ignore feature is a good idea.

I think if a userX is pushing for userY to get banned (when userY hasn't broken any rules), and they refuse to voluntarily put userY on Ignore, then they've pretty much forfeited their right to complain about it. If userX still brings up banning userY, even after "just put him/her on Ignore" "no!", then a modmin-forced Ignore should be used.

tl;dr: I agree and support forced Ignore
