Is there any way to make the quality better? I have been trying to record some stuff and the quality comes out much crapier than the quality I am playing at.

Do you have compression turned on?

On that note, it's normal to have more lag when running FRAPS?

I don't use it cos when I first got it I was quite lagged and I did not like that.

Yes, I believe it is.

In the few videos i've made, I had a little bit of lag. I assumed that was due to the increase in system resources. When running FFXI my proc is already pegged @ 100%, so introducing another process isn't going to make anything better. :)

Fraps will lag the game simply cause it's sharing the same CPU as your game is running. Since this game is CPU intensive and Fraps is recording you'll experience lag. It's not as bad as it use to be though, the program has had much improvement. I'm unsure of what crappy quality you're referring to though. The only options I know from Fraps is recording on Half-Size or Full Size and you can select the fps. If by crappy quality you mean that your video lags then...that's how it is. The best option is probably selecting 30fps and recording at Half-Size for video recording.

This all depends on how your PC is set up etc.

Fraps can't compress on the fly while recording your game at the same time as that'll use up alot of CPU resources. So you end up with a big video file. You must use another program to compress your video, either Windows Movie Maker or using other codecs like xvid or divx along with other programs.

Video quality depends on your resolution. FRAPS has a maximum res setting, which is listed on their site, and if you go higher the video size is automatically set to half your game resolution.

Recording will cause slight lag play, but the video is still smooth.

If you record in 800x600 or lower (depending on pc), the drop in fps (its not lag) will be less. You can still get a good quailty video and later compress it with nero vision or w/e you use.
