Okay, so two days ago I turned on my PS3 and was prompted that it detected a new HDMI device, only options were yes and no. It shouldn't have done this at all, but I went with yes and then a glitched green screen and no sound. After going "WTF?!" I turned my ps3 off and then back on again, and once again got another screen saying it detected a new HDMI device. I don't remember if I chose yes again or went with no, but eventually the whole screen went dark but I had sound and could hear the ps3 booting up, just couldn't see anything.

I tried several times to unplug the HDMI cables from the tv and PS3 clean them out with my air duster and plug them back in but alas, nothing fixed the problem. So I was thinking it was my cables. Turns out it's not the cables because I bought new ones tonight and was still getting a black screen when the PS3 booted up, with sound.

I bought the cables at Best Buy and talked to the cashier because I've seen him in the store several times and he looks like a nerd that would be able to have some helpful advice so I told him about my situation as I was buying the cables. He said it was most likely the HDMI port on the back of the PS3 and since I tried new cables to no effect, this is what it must be. He said he had his do the same thing, but that it shouldn't have done that unless I had it running for a long time (80 hours is what he said). I've never had my PS3 run for that long, not even 24 hours.

So bottom line is, it looks like I'm going to have to send my PS3 off to Sony to get it repaired. -_-

Dammit all! And I just bought 2 anime series tonight and wanted to watch them. Not to mention I still have Star Trek and Transformers 2 on blu-ray to watch. *sigh*

And people say only 360's break! But sorry this happened to yah man, it's always a bitch waiting for your console to be repaired then sent back. Specially if you're right in the middle of a game.

I never said only 360s break. They just break more often! I've had to send off my PS3 before and it took like a week to get it back. That sucks though Ecks D:

Think you meant 360 lol. And a week!? That would be awesome, microsoft takes like 2-3 weeks.

I did D: edit!

Thanks guys. I'm probably going to just wait until the new year. That way, hopefully, it won't take longer as it would likely take if I sent it in during the holiday season.

Off topic: What is your avatar from JP? That looks like a sick move.

You're like the 5th person to ask. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure. I stole it from someone else. But if I had to guess, I'm thinking Dynasty Warriors.

It is Date (dah-tay) Masamune from Sengoku Basara (a.k.a. Devil Kings in the West). It puts Dynasty Warriors to shame.

Ecks,

My brother had a sim. problem with his PS3 and he simply "reset" it to defaults and it fixed the problem without having to send it to Sony.

I believe you just hold the power button for 3 seconds when you turn it on. So if it is off, turn it on but leave your finger on the power button. It will beep and the lights will turn solid. (The Red and Green Lights in the front)

Then it booted right up, you have to re establish the HDMI and sound and stuff, but iot saved us about 6 weeks of waiting.

That may be worth a try.

As I said my brother had a similar problem and this fixed it.

Let me know how it goes.

Hmm.. I thought I tried that. Well I turned it off anyway. So basically what you're saying is to leave my finger on the power button after the system is on. As far as I knew all that did was turn the system off, but I'll give it a shot.

Edit: Nope, didn't do anything.

By holding the powerbutton down for 5+ seconds (you'll here a second beep and the light will flash) it resets the video output to default. So if you had it on HDMI but plug in component, it will reconfigure the video. It should recycle the power on the device after you hear the second beep, it should load back up and prompt you with what video output you want to use.

If that doesnt work, then like the guy at bestbuy said its most likely the output port that is broken, or something else internal.

-Hook up the PS3 using the AV cable instead. ( Composite cable should be ok to use )

-The system will auto detect the set up. Give it 30 seconds or so.

-When the screen comes up, then you can take another stab at setting up the HDMI in the system settings.

Also, In the event you see picture. Go ahead and reset the system settings

If your TV is 1080i, make sure not to set it to 1080p.

Just in case I'll mention. Make sure you know what the resolution or your TV is. If it's 720p, then by all means make it so in the system settings when dealing with the PS3's HDMI settings.

If for some reason you get a blank screen, just wait it out 30 seconds or so. If none of this works, then send it in for repair.

Mine did this the other night...but after I selected yes it worked fine...I had read this thread before and was freaking out because I thought it would happen to me...but it worked fine. It could be the HDMI port that is fucking up...go with what Ant said and check to see if it works in SD?

Ant I want to thank you so much. I had time Friday to finally try this. Dug my AV cables out of my PS3 box and plugged them in, turned on the PS3 + TV and turned the TV on the AV1 channel and it worked. Granted everything looked like crap because it was in SD but it worked. I could see and hear the PS3.

Then all I had to do was go to the options, video settings and set it back up to HDMI (still had the cables plugged in) and then switched my TV over to HDMI1 and like magic my PS3 was working again and looking sexy.

Now I don't have any problems at all, in fact.. it's like I never had a problem. Thank you for saving me a lot of time and effort. :D

Your welcome Ecks. It's always good to be able to save someone a lot of grief.

Also when the dude representing Best Buy told you how you should never have the PS3 running more than 80 hours. That is most likely a rare case. Plus those electronic super stores would have a customer cash in on them for anything cause there is commission involved.

PlayStation 3 passes "independent stress test" for durability

Sony America chief Dave Karraker has proudly noted on the official PlayStaion blog that the PlayStation 3 was put through an "independent stress test" by PS3 Vault and that it had passed with flying colors.

The test, entitled “How to kill a Ps3 Console” put the console through over 200 hours of operation in various adverse conditions that no gamer would ever have to endure.

The first part of the test placed the PS3 in a typical living room with regular temperatures and such. The test then ran the machine continuously for 108 hours switching between game playing and Blu-ray movie playback. "The only recorded anomaly was a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds.”

The second part of the test placed the PS3 into the back of a freezer van where the temperature began at 50 degrees Farenheit and slowly dipped down to 0. “We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees,” the test notes. “This was maintained for the last 24 hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden blackout to the screen, [but] this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.”

The final part of the test had the PS3 placed in a sauna where the temperatures fluctuated from 100 to 120 degrees Farenheit. “Strangely enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F,” read the test report. “The console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.”

After the test, the console was placed back into a normal environment setting and is still working perfectly.

In his blog, Karraker took one parting shot at the large failure rate of the rival Xbox 360, “A lot of noise has been made recently about the reliability issues of one of our competitor’s systems. So, not surprisingly, some of our more ambitious PlayStation faithful decided to run their own stress test on the PlayStation 3. They put it in a freezer at zero degrees for up to 108 hours and they put it in a sauna at 120 degrees for up to 64 hours — all the while running games and Blu-ray Disc movies on it. Did it fail? Nope. Like the Energizer Bunny, it kept going and going and going.”
