Hello everyone!

This morning I received an email (please see the below quote) from a reader of my weblog at http://mithratales.blogspot.com and as much as I would like to reply to him myself, I don't feel completely qualified enough with end-game experience to provide him with a factual answer to his questions.

To that end, I thought I would seek out the communities opinions and thoughts on the subject so that I can properly respond to his email.

Thanks for help guys!

Kea

Hello there! I stumbled across your FFXI blog (which looks very well put together), and was hoping you didn't mind me sending you an email. You seem to have alot of experiance and knowledge of the game, as well as alot of time invested.

I read over your Wed, November 15 update entitled "I Love to Farm", which reminded me of some things an ex-FFIX player told me about the game. Before I get into that, I would just like to take the time to preface my sending of this e-mail.

I have had an interested eye on this game since release, but have only dabled with a red-mage alt of a friend of mine, never actually picking up the game myself. I have been a fan of the Final Fantasy series for quite some time, so my interest has never really dwindled, just put on hold, I suppose. Back then, MMO's were a new thing to me. Then one day another friend of mine intoduced me to World of Warcraft, which I have been playing for quite sometime. I got hooked on the MMO bandwagon (as well as the WoW one) and tried others such as Eve, EQ2, DAoC, Guild Wars, The Matrix Online, and Anarchy Online. All of them pretty solid games with repsect to themselves, but I always seemed to come back to WoW.

So, my question to you relates somewhat to your "I Love to Farm" story. Is it true that end-game content (The Sky(?)) for FFXI is monopolized by other players/farmers? Would someone like me just be disapointed if I were to invest my free time into playing this game when I reached that level? Would I be forced to purchase the coveted items/artifacts, or whatever they are called, off the game's market, therefore forcing me to purchase game currency online?

Just a few quetions I had, as my search to find out if what that friend had told me was true or not, uncovered little results. If you have time to write back, that would be great :) It seems that if I were to pick up the game, now would be a good time with the release of the FINAL FANTASY XI Vana'diel Collection 2007.

Thank you very much for your time, and happy hunting in Vana'diel! (yeah I know that was lame)
-Kevin

Sky can be avoided, I've only ever gone up there for a few exp sessions or a mission, I still don't see the point in going there.

Ok, so what he's asking is what endgame is like, and if it sucks as much as he's heard.

Sky, by the way, is the region of Tu'Lia. It's called [sky] because it's a floating fortress in the sky, and the japanese called it that in auto-translate.

First off, if you never plan to level a melee job, you don't really need to worry about sky. But that's not very realistic, since it limits you to, what, 5 jobs?

The main reason people do sky is because you cannot "buy" the drops from there, they're all, as far as WoW terminology is concerned, bind on pickup, and paying gilsellers to get your items is something we refer to as "political suicide." Depending on what shell you get into, either it does or doesn't. Utterly hardcore camp Ulli (the keystone monster of sky) 5 days a week sky linkshell will drive you crazy. Too-casual sky linkshell will make you wonder why you joined because they get almost nothing done. As long as the shell has something of a balance, doesn't have horribly sucky players who wipe to the 8 NMs on a regular basis, it won't be a painful process to get the gear. And if they're people you like talking to, you might very well enjoy it. There is no monopoly on the key mobs, at least on this server, and the time dedication really isn't that bad for most shells.

Sky isn't the only FFXI endgame, though. There's Limbus (small 18 man raids), Assault (6-man raids), Dynamis (large 32-64 man raids), Sea (somewhat like sky, but almost nobody does it), and HNM.

HNM is a broad description for all sorts of mobs that spawn once every 24-ish hours, all over the game, all with good drops, and all have a good amount of competition for the claim. Definately the most lucrative form of end-game, but also the most stressful. Most players never get into HNM, due to the stress factor and massive time dedication required. 3-hour spawn windows, 150+ other people competing for the claim on the most popular ones, bots, hacks, gilsellers, endless amounts of drama... and also some of the best gear and gil in the entire game.

FFXI endgame is wierd, but just because one aspect turns you off, doesn't mean you can't find a linkshell that doesn't do that aspect.

I hope that sort of makes sense. ^_^;;

Hey, people want the best gear in the game, and sky is where most of it is. No reason to be rude about it.

Just one smartass replying to another. You're either into endgame or you're not. Been a very long week at work anyway, so I'm a bit testy in general.

Thank you Mai and everyone that replied with helpful information. Even I have a little clearer understanding of end-game as much as I might of thought I remotely could have known that hahaha^^

Thanks again guys!

My rudeness is just a side-effect of being right all the time and it generally has a point to it. It's also kept to the flameboard, now that we have one again.

Edit: yes, I'm a guy.
