Was just thinking of some of the epic games I grew up on, and how they should *really* be re-done and updated to modern day gaming standards. Some can still be played (i.e. PS1 games on PS3), but after being spoiled on 1080p goodness, it's sometimes hard to enjoy games made for a 256 color computer monitor.

In no particular order:

The entire QFG series (1989). QFG 4 was one of the first to use voice acting (and some damned good voice acting at that), and QFG 5 introduced inventory/battle systems that would be adopted as standard years later. Never have I seen a game bring humor, adventure and fun together in such a way.

Deus Ex (2000). For those who played it, no further explanation is needed. For those who didn't, imagine the best RPG aspects rolled into a first person shooter combined with one of the most awesome storylines ever put into a game. Yes, I know there are sequels, but nothing comes close to the original.

Chrono Trigger (1995). Chrono Cross was a worthy sucessor, but nothing can quite live up to the original. This definitely needs to be re-imagined to make use of the PS3's full capabilities.

thief-797529.jpg

Thief (1998). It was awesome enough sneaking through mansions and temples back on the old compy with the little speakers and the 15" monitor. Imagine the same thrills with a big screen TV and a surround sound system.

2hr1suh.jpg

X-COM (1993). The best of turn-based strategy and resource management/base building. X-COM kicked *ass.*

Systemshock2box.jpg

System Shock 2 (1999). Forget Dead Space. *This* game could scare the ever-living hell out of you, and you'd still come back for more. Imagine it done with the engine used for its successor BioShock.

Ffviibox.jpg

Final Fantasy VII (1997). Yeah, call me a fanboy, I don't care. This game was good enough for me to play it seven times. I don't think there would have been VIII, IX, X, or our beloved XI had this game flopped. Someone needs to get the old team together, give them as much manpower, money and resources as they want, and have them re-make this for the PS3.

Homeworldbox.jpg

Homeworld (1999). It's still the definitive game when it comes to real time space strategy. *Nothing* looked as awesome as Homeworld did when it first came out. Cataclysm was the best sequel... they took the best parts of the first one, and got rid of the annoying parts. Homeworld 2 looked beautiful, but was just made way too difficult, even for die-hard players. They need to Cataclysm-ize the original and ramp up the graphics for modern systems.

256px-Star_Ocean_Second_Story.jpg

Star Ocean 2 (1998). Easily the best of the franchise. Infinite re-playability due to having an unbelievable number of character endings. Sprites were way out of date when I played it, but the storyline/gameplay was compelling enough to keep me interested despite the archaic graphics. Done to the level of SO4, this game would be an immense hit.

250px-Moo2baa.jpg

Master of Orion 2 (1996). The first time I ever stayed up all night playing video games was the day I got this one. Even more than ten years after it came out, I still play MoO2 on occasion. I don't think a turn-based strategy game has since been made that was as fun as this for both hard-core gamers and new players.

Total_Annihilation_Coverart.png

Total Annihilation (1997). A game so detailed, it would take almost a year after its release to see an affordable computer that could run it smoothly at max graphical settings. Yeah, StarCraft is the king of RTS, but in many ways, TA was a far superior game.

256px-Half-Life_Cover_Art.jpg

Half Life (1998). Can you believe the original is over 10 years old now? Yes, Half Life 2 kicks all kinds of ass. They still need to remake the original with Half Life 2's engine.

256px-WingCommanderBox-front.jpg

Wing Commander (1990). 'nuff said. Re-do it before Mark Hamil is too old to do the voice.

Feel free to add your favorites to the list.

I'm a sucker for these types of threads, so i need to post in here.....

(1994) The original that started the series. Cop chases, and single opponent races. In it's day, realism never seen in a racing sim before.

Zelda_SNES.jpg

(1992) Far and away the single most enjoyable Zelda game i ever played. Side quests galore, and some of the dungeons could be completed in whichever order you chose (though they made others almost impossible if you tried). Full 3D remake, a la Ocarina of Time, has been needed for some time imo. No "comic book style", use real person models.

And last but not least on my list (for now).....

(1991) The DS version was good and all, but again, models based of real people and some new digital effects would kick some serious ass.

Legend of fucking Dragoon.

I'd love to see Resident Evil 2 get the full remake treatment like the first one got on the Gamecube.

I agree Half-Life needs a serious graphical makeover. That would be my nominee for inclusion in the next Orange Box-style compilation.

I'd love to see a fully-upgraded remake of Blaster Master in the style of BIonic Commando Rearmed.

I'm not even that much of a fanboy, and yet I've been saying since the PS3's release that FFVII really needs a remake. IMO the game's pretty much unplayable, not necessarily due to graphics but to shoddy controls, bad translations and old terminology (IE: Fire III instead of Firaga, Life instead of Raise, etc.).
Pretty sure SE's just dangling it around, not quite in reach but always there.

Holy crap, I can't believe I forgot Ocarina of Time... that definitely needs to be re-done with at least Twilight Princess level graphics.

...make Navi less annoying though.

Secret of Mana with online play so people can play as the other characters that follow you.

Syphon Filter the first game, This is the only one in the series I really liked.

Goldeneye, add online play to it.

This, right here. I would pay any amount they want to charge for this. I've been wanting them to update it for 10 years.

This would be $

Nintendo and MS won't ever agree to this. Nintendo owns the rights to Goldeneye and MS now owns Rare, unfortunately, no matter how much $$$ it would potentially make, neither side wants the other side to have it. It'll never happen.

Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem Forever would have been it, sadly, looks like that game will never be finished.

I'd sure like to get my hands on the source code, compile it, and program some more of it ;).

I do remember some time ago Rare worked on a revised version of Goldeneye in secret, and then when they were almost done asked Nintendo for permission, which was denied. Many called foul for "all of Rare's hard work", but really, if you work on something in secret then Nintendo's not exactly liable as they could've shot them down before they started working.
Alas, I believe the closest you're going to get is Goldeneye Source, a total conversion of Half-Life 2.

Which is probably better than anything you could have gotten from a modern console version of GoldenEye. Between either pretty visuals and bland controls, or last-gen outdated visuals and MOTION CONTROL BOUNDING BOX WEEEEEE, it won't be as good as the Source mod.

This was survival horror.

Don't laugh.

This is looks interesting.

On the note that you and others said FFVII, I do very badly want a remake. I don't like remakes usually because I do want the company to focus on new games, but only because I can see the picture, story and soundtrack created as a whole new game and add new depth to the story.

As for the mention of Link to the Past, I would love to see new content on that, but not a remake. I remember being a kid and looking through manuals or anything I can find for new content to explore or something to do.
