I recently acquired a 75 BLM acct of one of my buddies and am looking to gear it up. I currently dont have an extreme amount of knowledge about BLM and what gear sets I should have and whats the most common setup I should be looking at.

The events I do includes Limbus, Dynamis, ZNMs, Kings, Sea, Sky.

Really I am looking at first a standard NQ setup of gear I need to be effective for things the above things. I recieved the character pretty much naked, but I do have the following pieces:

Full AF
NQ staves
Magnetic Earring
Moldavite
Yigit Feet
Relic Legs
Vicious Mufflers
Tamas Ring
Igqira Weskit
Solitaire Cape

I think that wraps it up.

So the question is, as a starting point what do I need to add to be effective on the above events? I have ideas about what I need, but would rather hear it from the experts.

I suggest you work on that the most. The more you know about your job the easier it will get when you want to know about anything BLM related (like gear for example). There's only so much you can read online. Most of your info will come from that, but other knowledge will be from playing the job overtime.

The above set is decent for nuking but for BLM you're going to get into a lot of swapping gear in/out than average jobs (if you want to maximize output). A lot of gear for BLM is situational. The relic legs you have listed for example. Ok you wear them full time and they atleast have INT+3 but an even better thing to do would be to get Errant Slops for full time nuking and swap relic for day only. Magnetic earring is ok. IMO I wouldn't wear it and would get INT+2. Hands are good for nuking when resists aren't a problem. Feet are good. Cape is only good for certain spells. You'll get more overall damage if you nuke in an INT cape. Get another INT ring, INT neck piece, INT strap, INT ammo slot item, and an INT waist item.
The events I do includes Limbus, Dynamis, ZNMs, Kings, Sea, Sky.

Sorry dude I was originally going to type out a lot deep BLM shit but Im not in the typing mood right now (that and feeling lazy). I really really suggest first you do massive reading about the job. The more you know the less questions you'll have (it's a good feeling). I'm not sure what type of player you're going to be w/ your BLM.

- I'll want to BLM b/c it's really needed endgame and I'll gear it up good for events

OR

- I want to eat, breath, dream, and live this shit type of BLM.

Maybe you could type your answers as to why you think you should be wearing this instead of that for x event? And we'll say yes or no and why. That way, we'll all learn!... lol I'll stop now...

Yea.. depends if you want to be serious about it or just use it for a variety of end-game applications. If you want to be vanilla, then your gear looks good enough to me.

Pretty much, I figure Ill use it if we have a low number on BLMs on and need an extra one. Pretty much want to gear it up enough to be effective right now. Use it when the LS needs another blm is pretty much the only time Ill be using it.

I have jobs that mesh well with all events right now. So I am fine w/o the BLM geared, but wanted to have it decently geared for times that we needed it.

Thanks guys

So the question is, as a starting point what do I need to add to be effective on the above events? I have ideas about what I need, but would rather hear it from the experts.

For minor upgrades, I'd get Bugard+1, Phantum Tathlum, Elemental Torque, Phantum or Morion earring, 2nd INT ring, Errant Slops, and Penitent Rope. That set should be fine for a decent nuking set; however, you will need a resting set so I would at least recommend a few items such as errant body, beak necklace+1, hierarch Belt and maybe a few more spots. There is also the possibility of needing an enfeebling set as well, it will really help in events where you need an extra sleep or gravity which is basically any piece with enfeebling skill, but I doubt you'll need a ton so AF body, Igquira legs and head should be fine. Overall, I think everything I mentioned should run you about 800k-1mil, but a bulk of that price is errant body, penitent rope, and Igquira legs which I believe are all above 200k.

As far as your performance goes, it could depend a bit on your merits since it's just a 2nd character and you're not going for top gear. If the character has 8/8 elemental merits, it'll go a long way to helping out on events such as kings and sky that will have the worst resists. Other than that, limbus, dynamis and ZNM can almost be done naked with just staves equipped as long as you have an average group to back you up. I believe sea is pretty easy, but I was almost done with elemental merits so I don't know if resists are that bad especially after JoL was nerfed.

If you're serious at being a good BLM whatsoever, you'll have alot of macros. I honestly recommend using windower, and the spellcast plugin works great. Otherwise, you're looking at alot of macros without windower. Enfeebling sets, resting sets, standing sets (refresh and earth staff), healing set (helps), nuking sets, etc.

Using spellcast, you'd be able to auto change into an earth staff/refresh gear pieces between casts, which would make you a bit more efficient. Use at your own risk, of course. If you're not dumb you'll never get caught using windower.

If you're not serious with BLM at all, I'd still advise using some cheap gear for enfeebling/resting etc, and at least 2-3 HQ staves.

as far as staves go for blm upgrade to hq

dark > thunder > ice > wind>rest

ice is easily affordable(100k) so I'd get that asap, upgrading staves first would be the biggest noticeable improvement for the char itself.

If you're low on gil, go camp dune widow or buy an spider torque for 150kish, and snag an elemental torque while you're at it. If you have the room by all means get enfeebling as well although it's more expensive

Pish posh, you don't need that crap to be a good BLM!

Absolutely correct, but why bother with normal macros?

It's like, say you're right handed. And it happens you can actually write great left handed, but why would you?

A standard nuking set if fine for Dynamis, but for more Kings/ZNMs what have you you should try to build a resist set. I would recommend trying to reach the 120 INT threshold for this and then abide by a elemental > MAB hierarchy. This is all dependent on what exactly it is you're fighting of course and normally a BLM would adjust gear accordingly. But since you're just trying to build one fairly standard gear set, I would say to just gear for the worst case scenario. For example, for high level HNMs you will find your AF hands > Vicious Mufflers. Whereas if you're nuking stones the reverse would perform better.

There have been some good suggestions by other people already, but off the top of my head I'll list some items you can consider if your fund allow:
HQ Staves when possible (Ice > Thunder > Dark > Everything else)
Magic Skill Torques
Prism > Solitaire
Errant Slops/ Jet Seraweels for standard use. Although if you can afford Jet, just use that money to buy Mahatma Slops.
Penitent's Rope
Errant Houppelande
Qiqirn Sash +1 (Resting)
Beak Necklace +1 (Resting)
Arborist Nails (Resting)
Antivenom Earring (Resting)
Igqira Tiara (Enfeebling)
Igqira Lappas (Enfeebling)

I would say most of this is great, with a few modifications added to it.

As I know, currently the entire Yigit set is one of -thee- best HMP gearsets you can find. Not to mention it is free.

I do not have the information on me currently so I'll try to make an estimate.
Just be reminded, BLM is not a job like SMN, where you stack massive MP to compensate for your MP if you require/wish more MP on your overall character.

Thats why you invest in a HMP Gearset, to provide the fastest MP regeneration possible, when you're close, or completely out of MP(Should hopefully never happen.)

Here is a list of what I currently use. Provides you with a +26 HMP Gearset, not including the 1mp/tic Auto Refresh you obtain from the entire set, which converts to roughly +5~+6 HMP a tic(per 10 sec after the initial 20 tic starter which provides you no MP regen).

This is not including Melon Pie +1(+2? or 3? HMP), however I prefer Cream Puffs over Melon Pie, which is a straight +7INT over a +20~30MP and 2 HMP and 5 INT..I may be wrong on the stats.

Pluto's Staff +10
Yigit Gomleck +5
Yigit Turban +1
Yigit Gages +0
Yigit Seraweels +2
Yigit Crackows +0
Quqirin Sash +1 +3
Relaxing Earring +2
Insomnia Earring +1
Beak Necklace+1 +2

Jet Seraweels are the alternative choice for people who are biased against having -stats equipment, so if you wish +1INT more over no negitive -VIT(Main factor on Mahatma), then by all means do it. If you want to have the best, then Mahatma is the better alternative, and seems cheaper than Jet at times.

Of course Morrigains will beat any of these, with a whopping 10 MND and INT with MP and HP? Possibly -emnity as well, with no sacrifice to -stats at all.

I also figured, after you have capped 8/8 Elemental Magic merits, AF1+1 Wizard's Gloves, Elemental Torque is not really absolutly needed. Thats where you start making your high INT Build for HNM mobs, (330 skill? and X INT forgot it for the INT build on HNM), as to using Uggy Pendent/Philomath Stole/Prudence Torque during nuking which Uggy's latent don't activate. Even then, not really wise to use Uggy Pendent on HNM less your resist rates are close to floored(If that's possible).

Thats providing you have Elemental Skill Gear build: AF2 Helm(+10), Nashira Crackows(+5) AF1+1 Hands(+15 and +3 INT), Merciful Cape(+5), will most of the time get you consistant nukes on endgame HNM. Just be forwarned tho, stacking alot of Skill on mobs such as Fafnir will give you deminishing returns, however stuff like Khim where resists are alot higher, or Cerb, then this gear might or might not be pluasable. Otherwise you are cutting off possible dmg that you could add, when you have overflowing amounts of elemental skill.

You'd need to talk to Darthtaru, Pchan, Hmk, or a few others on these boards to get the best possible thing for these I would assume. Those some of the notable people on the boards that I'd be referred to via BLM questions that are more advanced. Darthtaru I have seen does consistant nukes on mobs such as Cerb or Khim with barely if not much at all resists.

I'd go into the elemental Debuff INT build, but you can wiki that, and its a very good alternative to BLMs of whom do not have a good nuking setup, but want to do some decent dmg while debuffing the mobs & retaining their other uses.

Can get good elemental skill gear, while stacking INT and have barely many resists on high lvl mobs and normal, just by having the simplist gear availible(sp) to you. This also makes room for error, as you may swap around, and not loose as much MP from a resist, and makes you one of the better /random stunners at camps. Just simple fast-casting debuffs, and retaining your ability to quickly stun if needed.

If you do not have all the possible rare/ex gear from Sea/Sky etc, simple AH bought gear can suffice, but will not always outperform the alternative, of course.

But like you've stated, you're most likely using it for casual gameplay or when its needed, so the basics would be best, if you're not going hardcore BLM, then ignore most things above this line.

The basic normal gear, HMP gearset, and Stun is all you really need otherwise as the casual BLM. I'd look into the elemental DoT setup and information stated on wiki, and there is a LJ somewhere about BLM and elemental Debuffs, and some good setups for certian mobs, while retaining the T4 Debuff(since its not mostly possible to reach the T5 Debuff -5HP tic without being Taru Naturally, thus possibly needing Kirin Pole. But this is considering the person lacks INT 5/5 Merits, and do not have Salvage gear availible to them)

Hope this helps, even tho not all of it related to your post!

Hay guys. I just wanna say that I wanna meet these people who are biased against having -stats equipment like Mahatama Slopes. Please send me a tell in game and I will show you how to make a macro to swap out those bad bad -stats.

Thanks and have a super day:)

A bit of misinformation...

For starters, you are semi-correct, Yigit is the best set, but it is no where near the best overall for resting if you get the appropriate gear from various sources which if you're comparing to the time to get full Yigit, is not that hard. Second, I hate when people say this: It's free; it's not. You still have to farm, assaults are still a form of farming and you have to pay using Assault points to purchase. Saying it's free is like saying the Euro is not money.

Darthtaru I have seen does consistant nukes on mobs such as Cerb or Khim with barely if not much at all resists.
And this just makes me question your validity.

Well sure, if you have the Assault Points to throw around, Yigit wouldn't be bad. I assumed BigD wouldn't be doing much in the way of Assaults on this secondary character. I was thinking more in the vein of AH stuff. Numerist/Avocat feet have more HMP than Arborist and Yigit for example, but those are a ZNM fare.

I know alot of people who play jobs such as SAM who prefer AF1+1 Hands, and other items, over Alky Bracelets, even tho the Alky is 'considerably' better - comments of some SAMs.

Just some people like to balance their gear without sacrificing other stats.

And this just makes me question your validity.

It is free. You do not have to pay gil for it, so there is not a reason to not have it if you do nothing else with your tags. Salvage/Nyzul is an exception.

Its much easier to get, specially if you do Assaults on a regular basis. Simple assaults that require you to either stand there and leech from a SMN, or stand and dispel a mob for 30min, is not 'farming' or work. Its simple standard practice. Can not use the excuse "I don't have the gil" to -not- not get this set for HMP, if you do not have access to the other gear.

Just because there are alot of Assaults that do require 5-6 people, for minimal return in points, does not mean you are incapable of doing lower tier assaults, for 3-4 members for 900-1k points each. If you're captian, you can aquire 1300+ per run if done right, then again Captian Rank people most likely already have the gear.

Kepe in mind this is for people who are prioritizing getting the said equipment, before ranking up.

About Darthtaru, I will not comment, as you would need to go and see for yourself, before you try to question my validity. Sorry. Then you need to watch him nuke on HNM. Question it, after you've seen otherwise.

Yes, its the best set unless you are able to farm multiple pieces from Dynamis - Tav that have the appropriate HMP gear from there.

Its the best set, compared to the overall difficulty getting the other piece* Corrected.

Keep in mind Assault points can be used to obtain items that you can sell on AH. Granted this isn't the best way to make gil but this is gil that will not go into your pockets. And farming is just as much work as doing certain assaults. They are both easy but both require time. That half hour doing a very easy assault could of been used to farm which is just as easy but also repetitive just like dam near everything in this game. Yigit is not free. If you want to look at it that way Ridills are free too but I don't have one. Does that make me lazy too?

I think most people got what I was asking and gave some good suggestions. I am not looking to build the greatest BLM ever assembled or even an above average one. I just want to build a standard NQ one with the RA/EX equipement I already have available + buyable gear. This isnt going to be a project I want to sink alot of time into.

I think I can get what I need to make it usable for most events with the suggestions given. Thanks to all.

Who knows, that -agi could mean life or death for a black mage! And the STR loss is out of the question. They're not worth it.
