Isn't anyone concerned that this site has advertisements with gil for sale?

Not especially. The people that already buy gil might find a new place for their purchases, thus aiding Sculli. The people that don't buy gil will ignore them. The people that might buy gil don't exactly have a hard time making up their mind and/or finding someplace to do it.

Seems like most of my preferred sites advertise gil sales. I just tune it out.

I am under the impression that selling gil is against FFXI ToS. I must be mistaken then. There is so much gilseller bashing on these boards I find it ironic that their ads are accepted. Very disappointed.

Of course it is, but this site isnt run by SE is it? Like I said before, you suggest a better way to pay for the hosting, or pay it yourself, and there won't be a need for them.

I already brought this to Sculli's attention....well brought my attention to Sculli rather, they already know about this and are dealing with it.

Even though the poll is so far in favor of keeping gil seller ads in, and they would definitely bring in cash if clicked, I decided to go ahead and block those ads.

As I was updating the new message headers (the stuff you see if you are not registered yet, try to log out and see what I mean), I realized that new QCDN users would see gil seller ads first when coming to this site.

This is unacceptable to me. I do not want to give the impression that QCDN is associated with gil sellers to potential users.

It will take me a bit to add all the gil seller domains to the filter that locks them out, but it will be done.

If you would bother to read the existing threads that describe the situation (QCDN operations poll - info about ad banners (last two pages or so) and What do you purchase online?) then you would know that the gil seller ads are being displayed as part of Google AdSense, and that I do not have direct control over the content of the Google AdSense ads.

I am able to block domains from being included in the ads, and that is something I am working on. However, I can only ad them to the block list after they have been displayed, and then it takes Google hours to pull that particular domain from the ad cycle shown at QCDN.

I currently have 42 domains on the block list, and every time a gil seller ad is pulled due to the block, it is replaced with some other gil seller domain. I can only block 200 domains, so it is quite possible that in the end gil seller ads are here to stay because the gil seller domain numbers exceed the block capability. We will know when we get there.

Ya, missed that thread sorry. Was discouraged to see people voted to leave them. I am the forever optimist and don't believe that anyone buys gil, but I imagine a lot of people do - hence the market for it. Out of curiousity I looked and I can't believe that you can buy that much gil - like 100mil gil you can but wtf is that? I guess if you are some rich punky ass teenager that gets whatever you want. I question myself paying an extra dollar to add a mule. This whole gil buying and selling market just blows my mind. It is a videogame.

Or leveling leatherworking to 100...

10 mil for 15 bucks.. *checks wallet, DAMMIT i only have 14 bucks ( /.\) well, i better go spend it on nice real shit then play money.

Nvm, 15 bucks will give you 1 mil. pfft screw that, that's such a rip. I can make a mil in one day in game, but making 15 bucks is a real task <,<;;

Fact of life. Everything costs money when you get down to it. You want to pay the 800 or so a year to keep this site up the banners will be down.

I had been wondering a lot about how this site was paid for, because it was amazing to me that there were no banner adds. I read the thread on the operations pole...and of course...being at work never ended up posting to it. Google adds takes the text in the web page and does a "best match" in their database to try and sell something.

Either way, kudos to Sculi for making this as strong as it has been for as long as it has been together.

Porn porn porn xxx porn porn porn xxx porn xxx porn porn xxx porn xxx xxx porn...

I wonder if that will work?

Haha, I think AdSense will will only serve porn ads if the site that hosts the ads is a porn site as well.

Right now the ads are new, things will have to settle down and at the end of the month I can look back and see whether it was worth the time and effort to put them up.

I have pretty much spend like 30 hours on getting the ads working and reading up on what else can be done and how it can be done and so on.

I believe that ultimately the ads will have to be better integrated into the templates to make use of existing "white space" as well as increasing the potential click-through-rate.

I do obviously appreciate that people do click on the ads, but I also think that it will taper off in time. Right now it's on everyone's mind and people click if they see something interesting. Once the topic won't be in the daily top threads anymore things will go down considerably. That's a value free statement, statistics from other boards show this kind of trend.

There are ways and means to counteract this, one of which is to provide relevant ads that also give the user a good value. That's hard to do with Google AdSense as there is no direct control over which ads will be displayed.

The benefit of Google AdSense is that revenue is generated on a click-through basis, while affiliate programs (such as Amazon) only generate revenue if the user actually purchases something.

I think in the long run it will probably have to be a combination of both in some way. My main goal is to not annoy users with ads, to not annoy users with whiney posts a la "oh noes! no ad revenue, we are going DOWN!!! aaaaarrgghhh...", and hopefully through ad revenue provide more service to the users. So much for goals, will have to see how it works out.

It IS weird to find gil selling sales advertised on a ffxi forum. But do what I do, which isn't hard, ignore them, they aren't killing you. But eh..thats just me
