Going from Vista to XP ~.~;

Problem: Vista is a RAM sucker if you don't shut down all the BS programs.

A common misconception.

It's actually managing your memory much more closely in order to maintain better stability (which it does ridiculously well so far).

The "BS Programs" are usually OEM programs that are preinstalled alongside Vista but Vista in and of itself doesn't use that much more than XP did.

Remember though, by Windows 95 terms, XP is a horrible memory hog.

When FFXI runs better on my XP, when my Vista laptop has much higher specs (More RAM, a video card that isn't just on-board like my PC), something is fishy. I've gotten rid of a lot of the shit that I don't need, and it's still lookin' that way.

FFXI is just plain badly programmed. SE had to rerelease POL for Vista because it wouldn't run properly. The program itself is using DirectX 7 & 8 interfaces which are only partially supported by DirectX10 (some earlier functions are emulated/simulated).

Then there's the fact that nVidia graphics drivers absolutely suck royal monkey ass in Vista. Got an nVidia graphics chip?

Is a fucking pain in the ass. Anyway, I found all my drivers for XP, no prob, but now I run the install dsc, restart laptop and it tells me:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer"

What the fuck does that mean? ~.~

I am not computer savvy, but I can pretty much follow directions. Please any assistance would be appreciated.

My Laptop is a Gateway (Model MX8738)

Help prs~ X.x;;;

Check your BIOS and look for Harddisc settings or ATA settings. No idea where you will find it in there with that laptop, but probably something with hardware settings... If there is something like that in there, it should say its on "ACPI" mode. Change that to "Compatibility" mode, or change it to w/e else is on that list, and try again booting up on the Windows XP CD again.

Tymon and Euph are correct.

Just go to Gateway's site, look up support and find your HD controller drivers. Make a disk and hit F2/F6 when it prompts you to during XP installation to install 3rd party drivers.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I reinstalled Vista today. So far so good, but I don't have Adobe CS3 or Autodesk Maya 8 installed yet. I'll let ya'll know how it works out over the next week.

One more noob question:

When I go into edit things or open progrms (example swapping DATS in FFXI.) I get prompted to give permission, whole screen grays over etc.. I don't remember how, but how do I get it to stop doing that? I had it differently before, just dunno how to get back to that. Thank you.

Go to the control panel and then in the search field up on the top right, type "UAC" and you will get a link to the User Access Control options. In there, you can choose to disable it. This is what I've done. It makes Vista a lot more usable.

Says: "No items match you search"

edit: lawlz nvm found it /noob off

GL on the upgrade to xp

I reformatted and reinstalle Vista first. I'm gonna go with Tag's theory that they fucked up my graphics driver upon original install. XD... I freakin hope so anyway.

If THAT doesn't work then I'll be trying to switch to XP.

GL on the upgrade to xp

As I said earlier in the thread and I'm betting you didn't even read any of it, GTFO with the "upgrade to XP" gag, it stopped being cute or funny about 18 months ago.

edit: not to mention fucking stupid considering today's the last day of XP's official support. Isn't one of the things we universally hate so much about Windows its security flaws and such? Yeah, good luck with a Windows version that doesn't get updated anymore.

Well, I think today is the last day for XP to be sold... they will still support it for up to 3 years after Windows 7 is released, I believe.

Uh, no? XP support finishes today. No more updates. No more help. It's done.

They stopped supplying it to OEMs some time ago.

Dejan: did you use Vista for more than five minutes before switching back to XP?
