An entirely spontaneous recurring problem.

After I noticed the problem, I reformatted, reinstalled, and still get the problem. I only get the problem when windower is active, so I suspect the windower - however, I am not 100% sure of that.

Probably your video card. I run windower fine with no problems.

Its a problem with nvidia cards. Typically gforce series. Only solution is use ancient drivers (like pre 45) and even then that doesn't always fix it.

My nvidia doesn't have a problem <.< I have a 7800 GTX though.

New gforce cards do fine. Its the older ones, especially the fx series I meant to say in the origonal post.

If you are having graphical glitches in the way that avatars and such appear chopped up or with holes in them, Paquin suggested an apparently successful remedy:
Go to the Start menu, click Run, type in Regedit, and press enter.
In the folder tree, open up HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlalyonlineUS\SquareEnix\FinalFantasyXI.
You will want to make a backup, just in case something goes wrong, so right click the FinalFantasyXI folder and click export. Save it as whatever you want, and you will have the backup. To restore it, just open up the file like any other and it will do its work.
Next, double click each of the 0003 entry in the box to the right. Click the radio button under Base that says Hexadecimal. Next just change the value in the Value data box from 400 to 500. Hit ok then do the same thing for the 0004 entry. That should fix the problem and probably make your graphics look better too.

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Search, FinalFantasyXI

Make the value of 001 = 003 and 002 = 004. (001 and 002 in decimal are your X, Y background resolution.. 003 and 004 are your X, Y foreground resolution)

That will fix the issue.

I've been having problems similar to Arc is in his last pic (the floating head). It only happens with certain armors and weapons. Since the card I'm using is a Geforce MX4000, would that same trick work for me also?

DRIVERS. 100% positive thats what it is
thats the same problem i had with my nvidia card

well for those that were trying to buy my Hktk Clusters, I locked up again last night.

Rones - you are genius - I hope. I have GeForce5700 Ultra, so I just went back to the original drivers. We'll see if it works!

I have an old machine using a geforce fx 5600 ultra with the exact same problem. I seem to remember using around version 45 of the drivers to avoid the issue, but I eventually just upgraded because all my other games played poorly with those old drivers. Problem is caused by the new drivers being designed for directx 9 applications while ffxi uses a direct x 8 format. Hope it works for you, although you might want to try the other solutions posted too. I hadn't seen them before.

Thats ok, while this might possibly be the most expensive shitty ass card on the market, it runs FFXI ok.

I think it is running fine now, I really haven't had much time to test it. Thank you for your help everyone, truly appreciate it.

I was sent a PM from someone having this same problem. Just uninstall the newer drivers you have, and install the ones that came with your card. I just used the OEM CD and they work just fine.

my old computer using BFG Geforce FX5500 256MB OC 4x/8x AGP work fine on ffxi with driver that included on the CD, so I don't know...

Well, I tried the drivers on the disk, but to no avail. The drivers on the CD were version 41.6. I'll try version 45 drivers like Rones said, then the register thing and hope for the best.

Did you try the Regedit suggestion given twice in this thread, by people that had the same issue previously?

My game used to be so laggy with a Geforce graphics driver, so I downloaded an omega driver and it works just fine now.

It was the omega drivers that f*ed mine up.

And no, I personally did not try the regedit mods. Perhaps they work, but I saw no reason to try if my old drivers worked.
