Guard Skill Up

Prepare to be surpriced. ^^
Considering every other monk has spent years capping their guard, no way he'll magically cap it anytime soon.

Spent 2 hours letting 4 mobs beat on me almost non-stop, gained 1.3 guarding skill. I've gained more parrying in a exp party on ninja.

Search Allakhazam for Jinghles... Just follow that link because chances are you can't search Alla. Or search Killingifrit for Shinjaku. Mostly capped guard skill is usually a sign of insanity. I think it's because of how long it takes to get it.

btw, for the love of Raptor Jesus, don't take their advice beyond Evasion down, Guard Skill up.

Anyone ever said I wasn't insane already?
8 or 9 quested ws's... Steel Cyclone is barely useful these days let alone Black Halo or Retribution... for a war -.-
4 unlocked ks30 weapons. Sure Senjuinrikio is nice... But dagger, ga and h-t-h? Great fun, and hey, that dagger is nice in one limbus zone :P

I have 3 skills under 200, guard (obviously), scythe and polearm. Been lazy lately. Or to much sky :P

So yeah, might be 5 years for someone who dont actually enjoy skillups.
But for someone who loves seing those "Reko's dumb idea raises 0.1"...
Dunno what to say. 6:32 a.m, getting ready for work and I have a smile on my face :P
First time in... 5 years?

I find it funny ppl conclude that "I didnt get any skillups and i was tanking 42535367867892% of my exp pt's". I mean seriously, your skill is underlvled by about probably 100-200 full points compaired to the mob you exp against. Would you take a 100 skill weapon and run up to steelshells and expect good skillup rate? Get real.

Exactly, I said the exact same thing on the first page.
But... "You know what they say about Bob" ;)

Where in the thread are people talking about that? I see Rekko making that example. I see you making that example.

I see me going off to Crawler's Nest, letting mandys beat on me (these are roughly appropriate mobs for skilling something of its level on), while wearing Relic Knuckles so they last more than 10 seconds. I see a .2 skillup. In 45 minutes. I go back to Aht Urghan, seek on SAM, and get .5 Parry in that exp party from a few random hits.

Again, you both make it PAINFULLY obvious you've never really attempted to level guard. Kinda like the sub-60 MNKs on zam who can't understand why a MNK would want to sub NIN at 75. It just doesn't make sense until you get there.

I tank a LOT on my mnk.
He/She stated though that it's not wise either.

i tanked 50% or greater in xp parties from 60>75 and i didnt see more than 100 out of guard by 75.

hell, /nin my monk damage tanks half a fight anyhow and it's still pretty gimp.

Mandy's in Crawlers Nest?
I can see why you dont get any skillups...

And no, I never really attempted to.
And yes, my mnk is only lv50.
But that's a good thing though. Because like you said.
Skilling guard, which is at say 80, at lv75 would mean mobs die pretty fast.
So, best thing is to try and keep skilling it as you level... and not just ride the bandwagon everyone hates so much lol...

On the /nin sub at 75 though, oh, that I understand /stare Caerloc...

Wow, way to quote me out of context, lol. My post said you won't keep guard capped during xp pts while you can easily keep parrying/evasion/etc capped during pts. This is correct. Anyway, I routinely duo things with one of the best mnks on the whole server (Cami) and we'll kill things for hours with only him taking hits and me healing him and he won't get skillups, and he's close to 200 guard. He always gets super-excited when he ever gets a skillup, and it doesn't happen often. I'm not talking weak stuff either, talking things like yovras in sea. You have a lot of lifelong mnks telling you it's hard to skill, why continue to blow off what they are saying when you haven't even done it yourself?

Note to self: Reading comprehension is only active after 3:00 PM.

And as to how I managed to get mandys confused with Saplings... I'm blaming the morning thing too.

You missed my point about NIN sub, though. A pre-60 MNK, unless he's very well geared, is not going to pull enough hate to even think about needing NIN sub. He finds it easy enough to pound away as /WAR, and giving the WHM a bit of a workout every few fights when he pulls hate towards the end (assuming traditional SC party). Giving up his favorite abilities, Double Attack and Berserk, in exchange for more survivability that he doesn't use, seems utterly stupid. But MNK 75+ with end-game gear and merits is a whole different job from MNK before Howling Fist.

Much the same, you've leveled parry, and shield, and umpty billion weapon skills, all relatively easy. Parry procs through shadows, shield procs a lot, and weapons are easy. Guard is a whole different thing. Lowest proc rate in the game, lowest skillup rate for its proc rate, and you're fighting an uphill battle due to 250+ evasion and sub-150 guard.

I hope that made sense this time, just ignore my previous post. _-_

clearly because reko is a lvl75 ninja with capped evasion, he is a god amongst monks at lvl50 and knows all about guarding skill.

I spent about 10 minutes(It was more) letting an Orc Champ pound on me yesterday. Guard fired off about 35 times. Not one bit of skill increase. 196 base skill, 230 equipped, and 81 AGI. Orc Champs should have around 320 delay. Thats an attack round(2-3 swings) every 5 and 1/3 second. 600 seconds in 10 minutes. 112 rounds. Atleast 224+ Attacks, only 35 or so guards on ones that hit. Which was atleast 3/4 of them.

This is excluding the Dreadnaught that linked when I pulled.

My guard skill is 0 on 12mnk :(

i have a 12 mnk it has like 2 guard on it ironically my first skill up was when I was around 1~3ish o.0 yeah guard is a weird skill didnt think there was a skill like smn skill prepatch(and still takes a bit of difficulty to skill solo) to skill up

At 100ish guard you could sub RDM (if you have it) at goto SSG. You can get 5 or 6 of the MNK Sahagin in there and throw up phalanx and just stand in a corner while they wail on you; even without guarding they'll rarely, if ever, do any amount of damage on you with Phalanx up.

Never said I was, and I dont mean to sound like it.

All I'm saying is that most people just eat whatever's served and dont actually put in an effort, or even try themselves.
And yes, I do beleive some of the posters in this thread actually tried to skill it, seriously.
I'm just "alittle" more retarded when it comes to skilling.
Some people get super excited when their leather/gold/alch/whatev rise 0.1 and I'm the same way, but in a whole other area of "crafts"...

I just choose no to beleive SE designed one skill to be SO much tougher than all the rest because it makes no sense.
But hey, I'll willingly announce I was wrong, AFTER I gave it a serious attempt myself.
