Context, most likely. That's Pompidous underwear you've got there. How many Pompidous are there? Most of the time, the sentence itself should tell you whether the s is for a plural or for posession. I'm sure there'd be kinks to work out, as there are with any change. Think of it this way though: how many horribly written posts here do we decypher on a daily basis? The mind can make sense of even the most horribly written statement. In many cases, apostrophes aren't the only punctuation in short supply. I'm not a fan of the idea of removing even more punctuation from written language, but if it's going to be, I'll cope.

While true... if I didn't know Pompidou is to be spelt as Pompidou without an 's' .. I would just think Pompidous is the full name.

This is gonna get y head in a tizzy. I guess I'll stick with apostrophes. Never heard of the removal of them, since I haven't been in an English Class for years and years.

*Though I have thought about getting TEFL certification or whatever that is called nowadays*

I really hope you get your marks raped if you do that. I know i'd be shot by my TESOL teacher if I did that in an essay.

The strange thing is I don't because it's following what has been taught to me for 5 semesters now. They don't mark down if you put the apostrophe for possession as they know it's a transition away for the norm. I think some people just got really confused and that's why I'm being taught to drop the apostrophe because people are only getting dumber anymore.
