Hey there,

I haven't drawn in like forever but was going to try my hand at doing digital pet portraits for charity groups and extra cash on the side. My big issue is learning how to paint in photoshop in a more painterly style rather than the very smooth digital style I'm used too. I'm wondering if any of you advanced photoshop users could point me in the direction of some good tutorials or offer some tips.

My crap usually looks like this:

When want to achieve a more painted look like this:

I know that this would probably be easier in painter but painter just confounds me and I lost my copy of open canvas when I lost my other hard drive.

If anyone has any help/suggestions/links they would be very much appreciated!

I've found quite a few generic photoshop tutorial sites in my search but nothing that deals specifically with getting that blend/brush look that painter gives. I know it can be done as a lot of art I've seen coloured in photoshop looks very painterly.

I'm looking for something a little more specific, thanks though

I have the same problem. I used to use painter before I got into using photoshop. While painter's layer settings drove me absolutely nuts, i still do like the looks of some brushes they have over photoshops. For quick fixes I found the best way around it ( and still using photoshop) is to mess with the brush settings. then on multiple layers, you can use the smudge tool to blend the colors. ( think the way you might do the hair sheens) Its defiantly more time consuming then OC and Painer though but still looks really good if your using a pen tablet with pressure sensitivity. using different kinds of blur on the layers might help too, and paint over some of them on another layer.

Baah you guys are too nice, I hate my drawings but do love colouring!

This is what I managed to pull off today. I wish it was more painterly and don't care for the background but I'm tired @_@

I don't see how anyone can hate these pictures. They are so awesome!

looks Awsome! Good job :D. I've put down PS for a bit and now teaching myself Illustrator. It's different but I like it. Vector files work so much better for T-shirt creation.

That looks so good Sabs! I love that art style.

Okee doke, been doing a few more if anyone wanted to see - thanks so much to everyone who gave me pointers in the right direction.

Here's my sister's dog Simmeron :)

Wow Sabs, those are beautiful! I didn't know you could draw like that. I love them.

i cant tell if you're hard smudging on the fur or using the opacity control thing on the drawing tablet.
either way they are marvellous.
keep kicking ass

Sabs, those turned out beautiful! Keep up the great work. I really like the brush strokes effects!

wow Sabs, very cool!

Sabs,
i loved all your previous FFXI art, but this....man...i am truly impressed. I love the way you are able to perceive colors, shades and tones and almost perfectly translate them into a picture, while enhancing the colors and overall feeling of it while you are at it.

i /tear to the fact i roam in the same virtual world that such an artist as yourself does.

/bow.

Beautiful and amazing, Sabia. I am very, very impressed. I would totally commission you to do one of Buddy if you'd let me, but I'll PM you about that if you want! :)
