Hello and welcome to FFXI, assuming you get set up and such. Welcome to Quetzalcoatl, if thats the server you're joining. Best advice for beginners:
1. Dont ask people for gil. As you play, you'll figure out your own routine for making the make-believe money. But early on, always remember your signet and sell the crystals you get with it on the AH (Auction House).. It wont be much (though some crystals sell for more than others), but it'll be a steady source of income and more than enough money for gear from level 1-20 at least.
2. Most people dont appreciate random /shout's in cities or anywhere else for that matter. Save /shout for requesting help at large for a mission or other task like that.
3. Try to keep your gear and weapons updated as per your level. Now this isnt to say 'go out and buy the most expensive stuff', but at least keep it up to date with your level. Some things will likely be out of your price range initially, but you'll find easier ways to make gil later on and soon enough those hard to get items will be yours. Until then, at least get the average stuff. If not, you'll notice your damage (be it from spells or weapons) and your defense will be seriously hampered.
4. At level 18, you get whats called a subjob (After a short and relatively easy quest). Its very important to gain levels in your subjob when not playing as your main. It provides you with additional hitpoints, magic points, and stat bonuses and spells, depending on the job. It plays a vital role in your characters development. Keep it leveled, to help yourself and your party mates.
If you need help, dont be afraid to ask people in-game for it. If you dont understand something, ask someone in your party. They'll (likely) be more than happy to point you in the right direction. Aside from that, keep a friendly attitude when playing and you should be fine. Good luck out there.
