Is there a set formula to determine how long a spell of level X will last on a character of level Y?

I thought it was only Sneak/Invis/Protect/Shell that were affected, but yesterday I learned that Refresh is also mega-nerfed and I would presume Regen as well. My lv10 blu would get Refresh that lasted for all of 10-11 ticks instead of the typical 50.

Does it slowly increase as the target char's level raises up closer to the level of the caster? Or is it based around the level of the spell and not the caster?

Add Haste to that list as well. I also think its based on spell level and not caster level.

Heh I would be messing around on a low level job with a protect/shell 1 on and some high level would run by and uber buff me and I would actually get a little mad. The gesture was nice but in the end they just made sure that in a couple minutes I would be buffless. :D

Oh well.

Im not sure what time it starts at, at all, but Im guessing the time is something like this:

For every level, the effect lasts +2 seconds.

The best way to test this is to have a lv 1 mule or something, cast the spells on that mule and time them. Then level to 2, and cast the spells and time them again. For added ensurance, possibly try the spells on a lv 10, or your main, but if it were your main you would have to wait a while, lol.

So the time is in direct correlation between the lv of the spell casted, and the lv of the user that received the spell.

yeah that too... and I'd presume brd songs as well.
At least on level 20 characters, bard songs (cast by me @65) do not have a shorter duration.

Also, and this I found interesting, is that the -ra (protectra, ect) last LONGER than the targeted versions. I'm prety sure that they last full duration on a lower level person, but cant state positively at this moment. I can test it later when i get home though

Bard spells keep the standard duration, regardless of level.

As is Haste.

I noticed way back when levelling my whm, once I was the highest in the party and just learned a new Shellra. There was quite a gap, and it always wore off on the lowest couple of people a few seconds before anyone else.

Songs: Unaffected
White Magic: Affected by target level vs. spell level, exact formula?
Corsair rolls: Unaffected (I believe?)

My guess is that it's simply target level divided by spell level (or 1.0, whichever is less - i.e. spells don't last extra long on people *above* the spell level). So if you're level 26 and getting Protect II, it'll last (26/27) * 30 = 28.88 minutes. But if you're level 10 and getting Protect II (say, from a /WHM PL'er), it'll last (10/27) * 30 = 11.11 minutes.

Both of those sound about right from my experiences with spells on lower level jobs.

Note that in cases where different jobs learn the same buff at different levels, you'd go by the lower level (i.e. whenever *some* job first gets it) to determine the spell level. Haste thus counts as level 40, for example.

Bard song (and I think corsair roll) durations are unaffected. As are durations from items (read: oils and powders work fine at level 1, even though sneak and invis wear off pretty much instantly). Dunno about avatar buffs.

You guys that think up formula's are amazing. I love you guys!

I believe it has something to do with casters enhancing skill and the targets enhancing lvl.

Anyone know if smn buffs get nerfed on time as well?

If it was based on enhancing skill then wouldn't it affect everyone regardless of level? There would be a noticeable difference between, say, hasting yourself and hasting a melee.

Yeah suppose your right and as for smn buffs not sure..at 20 when you do solo battles they last the same amount of time as they would if you were higher but below that not sure.

My next theory is spell level (level it is learned at) might be a factor

I don't think smn buffs get nerfed, for duration at least. I often use Aerial Armor as whm/smn and it seems to stick on me and the others affected for a hella long time, probably about 2-3x the duration of a regular Stoneskin. That's considering my smn job and the avatars are (currently gimped at) 35.

I'm not sure how long it lasts as smn main but it feels about the same (been a while since I mained smn though).

Nah, because if the character hit with the spell is equal to or higher than the spell cast, it will always last the same amount of time. Haste from a WHM in any range between L40-75 will last just as long on a target of L40-75. Doesn't seem to be any bonus for being above to normal level of the spell, only a penalty for being under.

Enhancing Magic has no effect on Refresh, Regen, Protect, Shell...to my knowledge they only do anything for Blink, Stoneskin, Phalanx, En-spells and Bar-spells.

SMN buffs aren't "nerfed", either. Aerial Armor and Earthen Ward last 15 minutes (think normal Blink/Stoneskins last 4 or 5?), more if you're above the natural Summoning Magic cap. Believe Earthen Ward gives (SMN level)*3 HP, unsure of that though...

Vilurum's assumption on duration sounds about right. I personally figured it was perhaps -5% duration per level under the spell req was, myself.

I PLed Hamlett with BRD songs, and it's pretty damned sexy. I'd use it over mage PL if I could find a BRD to PL me.
