Honor

hrm. I'm gonna come crawling out of my lil hole and say something.

I saw someone mention they believed they were one of the most honorable people they know. One who is honorable, it would seem would not need to say it, but it would show on their personality. Interpreation does effect the ideals of Honor as a whole. Most see it as a chivalrous type code, which, to most is also dead. To many, why ride this dead horse? Yeah, I've asked myself this a few times, and I refuse to talk about how honorable I am or am not. All I can do is try my best to live in that form of light. One can't always think about how others act, or necessarily concern themselves with how others act. One can only uphold their own honor, and sometimes that may bring it out in others. SO hey, don't give up on being "honorable" because people aren't, they'll get theirs in the end. So, the best thing I guess I can think to say is:

Be Honorable to yourself and others, and let the world act as it may, because you known to yourself you do the right thing. Do it for that reason, not for the recognition, or respect. ^_^.

Thats about all I can think of to put in there in my tired state.

Thanks - Mal.

If there was ever a time when the majority of people were "honorable" in any time period. Would the "Samurai" have been wiped out? Would that mentality had dissapeared except in story books?

Would something that is a common as a smile been so revered and talked about as such?

I don't think so. The reason the Samurai garnered such respect and attitude was because it was "rare". I know it sounds really cool to think that all Japanese people at one time were "honorable" but that's all it really is, a nice dream.

Men will always "only be men" and men have faults. There are great men, and there are normal men, and there are bad men. Its unfortunate but the great ones are always rare, and they are usually defined as "honorable".

Yeah, war ending wouldn't have had anything to do with them getting "wiped out".

Good to know that Samurai were rare and that everyone was a bunch of backstabbing pigs, guess the late 1400s-1500s is all a big lie.

Are you trying to say that during the "Samurai" era they were ALL Samurai? Are you trying to say the majority of people alive were Samurai? Just what are you trying to say?

Let me try and give you this point of view. Have YOU ever stabbed anyone in the back Mish? I never used the term backstabbing pigs, you did. So if the person is not an honorable person they are now a back stabbing pig?

do you think this post will change people? stuff like this always gets me down. i feel like i am the type of person who trys to emulate some of the ideas the Reishu pointed out, and this makes me aware of my shortcomings. i especially regret things like this last topic i made. MajorHavoc i apolagize.

on another note, i have been in china for the past 5 weeks and even though the are not the japanese, they too have a concept of honor. it is not talked about, and there is no "code" or anything, but it is displayed in thier behavior. 95% of the chinese people i have met have displayed all of or at least a good number of things that Reishu metioned. here it is commenplace, not admired. someone in this thread mentioned "if everyone was like thing what would we have to look up to?". we wouldnt have honorable people to look up to we would be admiring the successful people in thier field. in FFXIs case, people that are awesome at thier job, and people who have done things that are absolutly extraordinary.

do i think that everyone here can become honorable? i think yes. i think almost every culture in the world has a concept of honor. we all just call it something different. these people that steal and betray are merely just misconstruing that. im out of time, i hope i got my message across.
No need for an apology, Saiyaman! I knew you weren't the internet troll you first claimed to be. LOL! I just couldn't understand why you would say that you're the type of person that starts trouble "to get a reaction" as well as stick up for all those who do. I am glad that you found out you can get a better "reaction" by NOT being an ass towards people. Although, some deserve to get bashed but they usually bring that on themselves.

Im not tring to steal you thread but I have alittle situation and I would like to know If i was completely dishonorible asshole. Im not naming names cuz these were cool ppl. I offered to fill in for someones static for a few weeks 60-62, so yesterday we have the first pt and we are lvlin in onzonzo. Now b4 i get started this static only meet once a week for 4-5 hours I normaly think thats waaay to little lvlin. But they had lots of RL things todo understandible, and i saw this a way to keep up with my rng cuz im takin a break from it but i want it to at least go somewhere. Some shit happens I end up dieing on a pull then after that 2 more torma pop and my whole pt is killed and we spend 30 min lookin for a raise. We get raised shortly after we get started ose pops, and ive been wanting/ needing an assult jerkin. But I ignore it for a while cuz this is there static, 20-30 min pass and ose still hasent been claimed yet, there was also a nother pt there gettin plvled my a lvl 75 pld and rdm. I ask my pt if they want to from alliance and kill ose they decline cuz they want xp, but i really want this thing. the other perty alliances and start killin him, so i ask if i can jump in and help they say sure. I know i promised that would fill in this static but i figured ti should only take 5-10 min to kill him. They all keep tellin me not to leave and I say fuck it i know they can just as easly kill ose without me and this is a free chance to possible get my assult jerkin. And the pt wasnt gettin all that great xp and in that 10 min they would have got 500-900 xp I figure they can get xp anytime you cant just get an assult jerkin anytime you want. Besides I would only be gone for 5-10 min we was dead for 30 min b4 so i dont see this as such a big deal. after ose dies no drop and they say that since i left im out of the static because i left to kill ose. they saw it as me leavin the static for another pt and i saw it me leaving static for a few min to possibly get a jerkin. but nontheless there piss at me and i think they over reacted. I know they only meet once a week but i take oppurtunity when it knocks now an i wrong or dishonorible for doing that. I hold nno gruge against these ppl but i still think they over reacted

Hellstorm, i'm not a "he". God forbid! It's all good though :P

Darkdante, you're right that not everyone in Japan lived the Samurai Code, but nobody said all Japanese people did. :) Also, the Code didn't end because Japan lost in WWII, it was only banned (by us) in the martial form (the use of the Katana being the most notable). The culture is still there, among the people who make it a point to live in that manner.

I've never bought into the idea that "men will only be men, therefore stupidity is excused." Maybe that's a mark of the social class i was raised in, but i believe that any person can be an honorable person, even in a slum. What would you think people such as that think? I don't think they'd give into an idea such as that.

This topic is about why we don't see more honor, and the answer is nothing more than people not living the code of honor (inside, respect is outside). There are a lot of people that aren't, and also a lot of people that are, in varying degrees. Honor just isn't made a public thing, it's something that "glows" inside, and only shows at the surface in subtle manners. Those things are only seen clearly when someone has a level head enough to notice it, which is why it's seen so rarely in this game (the level rush is a big reason people don't bother to see interpersonal things such as that.)

Honor would be G.W. stop hyping the fucking taxes so i can pay off the 7000 on my car =o.

Honour is something that a lot of people can and will live without, if you can say, "Oh, I'm an asshole, I steal, I cheat, I scam, I laugh at my victims," and it's all true, you are still honourable, you know what you are doing is wrong, but you still do it, doesn't make you dishonourable, makes you an asshole.

A lot of people have different views on honour and what honour is, giving a fair chance to people, being more "pure" than the next guy, helping people without giving thought to yourself, and most of these are right, there are barely any WRONG definitions of honour, people can live out there lives without honour, sure, why not, it's not a necessity, but with honour usually comes respect, and living a life without getting respect is what usually leads to people becoming assholes, corrupt, possibly as far as evil, honour may not be a necessity, but, I believe at least that respect is, and respect has to be earned, honour doesn't, you can just "be" honourable, and thats one of many ways of getting respect.

There's nothing to continue on the subject. I think Davio got it wrong refering to US army (or any army for that matter) about honorable acts and deeds done in the name of God, a Country, an economical Empire, a Creed or a WMD threat. Every goddamn army ever roaming this Earth has done horrible things w/o a 2nd look onto Honor and Respect.

You can talk about Honor about one man, not about a group of people. Honor is an individual state of mind everyone has to achieve in order to create a kind of peaceful society.

I still stand by my statement, being in the army gives you a sense of honor and a new look at life. I have 2 cousins in Iraq right now. Whether you were a Natzi or US troop every solder had family waiting for home day. Its morals that set whos right for making that decisions etc. that im not getting into.

I really don't recall the U.S. Army being involved in anything that was done 'in the name of god', nd the WMD threat comment displays naievete in the extreme. War is about killing, in that you may be correct, but if you think that there is no honor to be had in war than you are sadly mistaken.

I'm sure being in the army might give some of the recruits a sense of honor. However, the actions you'll have to do will be a mixed bag of honorable and mostly dishonorable doings (I'm talking about a soldier at war not someone waiting at camp back in the country).

I think we disagree also because there're different kinds of honor :
- the honor you have for doing whatever you're being told in the name of a Cause and for defending a whole country;
- the honor you are allowed to feel for doing what seems right to you and in regards of moral issues such as respect of the Other, respect of oneself, understanding of situation, etc...

and countless others someone has already posted :)

There is nothing honorable in a concentration camp, firebombing or nuking a civilian population, or a "shock and awe" terrorism campaign.
