Now, before I start this discussion, let it be known that I'm not an elitist. I take pride in my own gear (which is usually good, if not optimal in most situations for every job I play, no matter if it's a sub or whatever). I don't expect everyone to have the time or patience to farm Valkurm Emperor/Leaping Lizzy/Mee Deggi/Argus (though the first two are real easy), I just expect you to at least be decently equipped and competent.

Now, this was at around 2 am last night, and I shoulda SS'd and took down names, but I'll just relate a common situation.

I'm in Kazham, I don't want to dual-box solo so I figure I'll lfg whilst reading/studying and if I get an invite, great, if not, no loss. So I get kinda excited when I get a tell asking if I want a party. I agree, and as usual, check the list to see what we've got setup. First warning sign: Red Mage with an under-leveled sub job. Now, I think that by the time you hit Kazham, you should take it upon yourself to at least have your subjob to 16, if not 18. The jungles are already pretty painful.

So I think, well, maybe it's not that bad. Then I /check the guy, and it's just abysmal. Not a single piece of +mp, one +1 mnd ring, and random main armor. No back, no belt, no ears, no shield, no nothin'. But invisible is an important enough spell to buy over armor, I'm sure.

We have someone else who is clearly new to the game (that very airship to Kazham was his first airship ride), and was better equipped than this guy. He at least tried. I like new people, and it's always fun to tell em about the cool stuff that isn't just leveling, and give em advice.

So I'm thinkin one horribly gimp person and one newbie can't be that bad. And then I check the thief. Nearly the same story as the Red Mage, lack of gear, and the gear he does have doesn't really benefit him. I held my tongue and just logged.

I really wanted to say something, but I was tired, and didn't want to get into it with one of those "It's my $12.95!" people that try to justify not needing gear or subjobs. This topic isn't really flaming or calling out anyone (if it was I woulda named names and had screenshots at the ready) but if the mods want to move it to the flameboard it works there as well I guess :)

Just wondering, when do you guys consider someone to be 'gimp', and how do you deal with said people? When is it ok (if ever) to be naive/ignorant about your gear/subjob? I figure by Kazham, you have a notion of how the game works (the new guy in the group was very quiet, but I could tell he at least got what was going on), and should have your sub leveled, and decent gear.

It varies, especially when some player skill is involved, I think.

During my last subligar run in Phomiuna Aqueducts, I gimped DRK40/NIN18 around just so I could use my shadows when we fought Eba. Granted, my gear was good for the task (RSE ftw), and I had food and the like, but it was still "a gimp subjob".

Now, as for your team:

There is no reason anyone should go to Kazham as XXX24/YYY12. The whole of leveling from lv1-24/25 takes place on the mainland, and leveling a subjob to 12 is not that difficult. I can understand a little more when someone is gimped at, say, XXX26/YYY12/13 in Kazham, but even then there's no reason to be that low on your SJ for reasons previously mentioned.

There is NO reason a person shouldn't have their subjob by level 20 at the max, in any case.

As for gear, I would have mentioned to those people that there is really cheap gear they could have gotten from merchants. Sure, that gear doesn't have any attribute modifiers on it (normally), but it at least offers *some* kind of defense.

Getting from level 24-25 in qufim sucks, the vast majority of the monsters are going to be T at most, so exp will be much slower than at 23. I usually head up to khazam at around 24, because you can still fight well there at 24 and the exp/hour is much better. Not to mention you're also slowing down the rest of your party's exp.

Technically you can get from 25-32 on the mainland too, that's what people used to do; khazam is just much faster exp.

Yeah, one of the people was 23, and another was 24. The thief was also Thief/Warrior mainhanding a parrying knife o.o;

Actually, at that level, parrying knife isn't that bad for damage; there's better knives, but they cost more. Not much more, 25k vs 4k, but it's not a horribly gimp weapon. It doesn't remain useful for too long, though.

It really depends on the stats of certain items and the job that you are using. I would say that by the jungle that you should have something in all slots except maybe ranged, ammo or sub if your job doesn't need them. Some equipment at lvl 24 is not always better than the lower lvl ones but that's why it's good to compare the stats before you buy stuff.

Depends on two factors:

1. Have they been around long enough that they ought to know better? If yes, then that's all the more there is to it, and they're being *knowingly* gimpy, and deserve no sympathy.

2. If no, then do they listen to advice, or do they play the "it's my $12.95/mo" card or the "I already know everything I need to know [even though I don't], stfu" card or the "I'm a (insert princess job here), if you don't want me someone else will, I'm leaving" card? Or something along those lines? If they're up for listening to advice, then go ahead and give them advice. (Aside: it often sinks in best if you're not antagonistic about it.) If not, we're back to having no sympathy for them whatsoever.

Gear-wise, the line between gimp and acceptable is much more easily crossed than the line between acceptable and pimped out. (Read: it's *usually* not terribly expensive, either gil- or time-wise, to get to the level of acceptable.) And it usually has more effect on effectiveness too, particularly at low levels, where "pimped out" often just means a few defense more because there's relatively little noteworthy gear.

There are a few cases where "acceptable" actually costs enough gil to say so (perhaps several hundred K), but it's never a *truly* bank-breaking amount (millions upon millions or anything), and it's a very significant improvement over alternatives. NQ Haubergeon comes to mind as an example. It's not cheap, but it's not bank-breaking, and it's ridiculously effective for its cost, availability, and only taking up a single slot.

I think it really depends on your company on what defines gimp. Get someone thats been around awhile in your party and what is considered gimp is much different then say the typical person that hasnt played that long. At lower lvls (read: 40 and below) I dont really care what people have. As long as the setup is good and we get a decent exp per hour. Mainly I think that is because if I am leveling a job under 40 I am probably leveling it because I am bored. On the flip side at higher lvls, I have booted people significantly less. Example would be a DRK using SH at 67. The worst one as of late was when I was exping PLD and a different DRK(2 seperate occasions) showed up with SH and NQ lvl 12 Dex rings or somthing, nomads mantle, and a bunch of other stuff. Meeze was in that party and checked him first. Needless to say Meeze had some educating to do.

You used the proper "too". I am impressed.

I think you can use your discression as far as figurign out what to consider "Too Gimp".

Make a rough scale from 1 - 100.

A " 1 " would be someoen that has a Lv.1 Sub that's innapropriate to their main, completely naked, no food, sneaks, invis, basic transportation(airships, choco license, etc) gil, and has any of the folowwing prefix/suffix to their name: dark, god, x, xy, xxx, big, mega, ultra, sephiroth(or any incarnation of), etc.

They can go into the negative if they are the one giving orders and it's obvious they have no Idea how to play.

a " 100 " would be someone in full HQ or Super Rare/Ex gear, that's overly apropriate for their job, uses HQ foods, carries all nessessary supplies, has all modes of transportations, knows of odd levelign spots that no one knows abotu that are nev er crouded, has maxed merits, and could theoretically be soloing I.T.'s, but decides to level in a group as to pass on his skill for the benefit of others.

Passable would be someone that Does their job, has all the gear and subs needed for thier job to not be any kind of liability, carries proper supplies and food, and knows how to avoid aggro.

Personally, I dont' put up with much anymore. I know that I don't need to save face and be nice to everyone. The people that you are nice to, would already have a clue. The people you shit on, don't matter, they wont be there in a month. I know it sounds kinda elitist... And I have no reason to apologize. Yeah, it might be their $12.95/mo... But it's the group's combined $65.00 remainder that's being wasted. Money aside however, there's one thing more precious I will never get back... My time.

So to answer your question, how gimp is "too gimp"? Simply, when you know you could be doing better, or having more fun elsewhere, or with other people.

Lol, I remember using G.Katana on NIN when I took it through the Jungles =D. As far as the gear for RDM, I suppose Saintly Ringx2/Eremite's Ringx2 wouldn't have been too much to ask for - but the rest of the armor just isn't good enough at that level to justify more than 5k per each piece.

Yeah lol, when I took SAM through the jungles, I subbed DRG and would Jump with my GK. After capping GK I'd use a Polearm

Just look like you tried is my standard.
Oh and get a hauby.
If ya cant wear a hauby jaridah petih and I'll pretend it's one.

Edit: dont forget to wear at the very least the cheap basic gear for your job and anything questable via solo for your character.

Ninja's get your damned fudo at lv 70. I dislike venerer's rings and jaeger rings because theyre an excuse to people to sell off thier sniper's and weaken themselves but getting a venerer's ring is an important thing for me to see in DD hopefully considering it's low cost as a minimum. Seriously.. dont buy yourself a snipers'+1 and turn arund and wear jaeger on the other ring finger.

On a scale of 100, I don't think I'd exp with anything under an 85. To me, that's all the vital gear for your job -- haidate for the jobs that can wear it, etc. Not necessarily the sought-after kings gear, but an all-around knowledge of their job and pretty damn good stuff.

Hehehe, Oh I definitely have higher standards and a more elitist attitude towards end game. 50+ when exp starts to climb and there's littler room for error/stupidity, I definitely will not tolerate an under-leveled sub or some blatant gimptitude.

Now, say between 25 and 50, I'm a little more lenient. More so from 25-37 than higher, unless you're already an advanced job. If you are any advanced job, there's no excuse for not having a decent set of gear, and general knowledge of how things work (at least until 30-32).

Here's an example of what I don't think is appropriate:

Are my standards too high lol?

Sorry for the crappy paint job xD
