How gimp is too gimp?

In my honest opinion, if you have someone that has up to date gear (meaning it IS their level, and it DOES make sense to have it) then THAT is decently geared... Meaning, they dont finish in first, but they dont rank out...

Many people rag on players whos gear is actually up to date, but isnt as 'good' as their own, or better... And it irritates me. But thats just me.

Some people rag on them without even giving gear suggestions... Others will try to give suggestions, but they dont word what they say properly, which only pisses off the average joe... And even sometimes, the average joe doesnt listen.

meh. This is just me though. If the gear is up to date, they arent gimp. My opinion though.

Level requirement is a bit misleading for anything other than weapon and pure-defense armor. After all, it's not quite fair to rag on 75 MNKs for wearing a level 40 belt, or for many 75 melees to wear a level 33 necklace. :P

I do understand, but sometimes, these players are genuinely new players... And they cant really help their gear problem just yet. They could have the best attitude in the world, but people would still rag on them

that's when theyre being douches. However your defenition of a newbie may be different from other people's defenition. I consider lv 30 to be when people should have cleared themselves of basic noobism. Unfortunately that doesnt always happen but by lv 30 i had managed to start looking decent on my thf since I could use the CP from leveling 1-30 to buy my gear comepletely free.

Depends on two factors:

1. Have they been around long enough that they ought to know better? If yes, then that's all the more there is to it, and they're being *knowingly* gimpy, and deserve no sympathy.

2. If no, then do they listen to advice, or do they play the "it's my $12.95/mo" card or the "I already know everything I need to know [even though I don't], stfu" card or the "I'm a (insert princess job here), if you don't want me someone else will, I'm leaving" card? Or something along those lines? If they're up for listening to advice, then go ahead and give them advice. (Aside: it often sinks in best if you're not antagonistic about it.) If not, we're back to having no sympathy for them whatsoever.

Gear-wise, the line between gimp and acceptable is much more easily crossed than the line between acceptable and pimped out. (Read: it's *usually* not terribly expensive, either gil- or time-wise, to get to the level of acceptable.) And it usually has more effect on effectiveness too, particularly at low levels, where "pimped out" often just means a few defense more because there's relatively little noteworthy gear.

There are a few cases where "acceptable" actually costs enough gil to say so (perhaps several hundred K), but it's never a *truly* bank-breaking amount (millions upon millions or anything), and it's a very significant improvement over alternatives. NQ Haubergeon comes to mind as an example. It's not cheap, but it's not bank-breaking, and it's ridiculously effective for its cost, availability, and only taking up a single slot.

Quoted. For. Emphasis.

The bolded is especially important given the audience reading this. More often than not, flames can be avoided entirely if players can initiate conversations with more than a "hey gimp" reply. A simple "Hey, how are you? Nice to meet you. Is it possible you can change your sub? It'll help improve the party." Or better yet, since this applies more, suggest simple cheap alternatives to their current gear or lack thereof. Tell them a beetle earring will give them +attack and it's the best earring for probably 20 levels and that the +1 version is actually only slightly more expensive. If they don't use food, give them a couple of meat mithkabobs and tell them to see the difference. Once you do that, convince them to use food from now on as it's considered a party standard. If you can do that, try hinting at using sushi at later levels because of the vast improvement on accuracy. Remember, you'll catch more bees with honey...

And I know there is an endless amount if noobs out there, but if everyone took the two seconds to help another out, it'll stop future occurances. Then the next person doesn't have to deal with the same BS the last one did. Don't forget, the longer you let it go, the worse it gets.

I'm not 100% sure, just 99%, but I think I know who this RDM was. I recently accepted a pearl to a complete nub shell while taking DRK through Dunes, and this cat is in there.

On one hand I'd like to place sole blame on him for not asking about equipment, whats best, how to obtain it, why it's good etc. I'm not in this shell very often, but when I am I make certain I'm very approachable. If this is the same guy, I took a good look at his "gear" the other day after hearing someone in my main LS going insane about how they were looking at the worst geared RDM they had ever seen, and totally /staggered. It was a tossup which slot boasted the best stats, I'm conflicted between the Sandiorian ring and the Erimites ring.

I'd like to place all the blame on this guy for being an idiot, but I really can't. He is a nubsauce, and really only needed a bit of guidance beyond what the Brady Games guide had to say. It took me a quick 15 mins to give this guy a few pointers on what would be better, and why, and his stuff all changed. Electrum rings and pin, solid wand +1, Red Cape, all the standard mage shit you'd expect to see. Not flashy, not impressive, but not lacking either.

I blame the people who look at this stuff on new players, and say absolutley nothing. Sure you may get the $12.95 a month yarn, sure you might get told to fuck off, but you also might help someone who just plain doesn't know any better out. Isn't that sorta our responsibility as upper level veteran players? Shit, I even watched Vang teach a 32 THF how to sata in a pty the other day. Most times all you have to do is approach these people with a degree of civility and you'll find they are very receptive to your input.

Musta been a different rdm, because this one wasn't even fortunate enough to have those rings <.<; and wasn't above level 25 yet. And usually I will say something, but it was late, my brain was fried from both playing and studying all day, so I just logged and figured I'd be seeing them again anyway (I have seen the thf again, not the rdm yet though). I was just so suprised that this RDM could look be able to guide a complete newbie (notice newbie, not n00b, there's a difference) but look like crap himself. He basically had a sword, random pieces of head/chest/gloves/legs/feet, and an empress band. Nothing else.

Yeah I get bothered when people think they can talk to someone else anyway they want to, and that person should listen anyway just becasuse they think what they're saying is right.

Also I've never agreed with the whole "you shouldn't level anothor level until you have <insert gear>" I don't think I had anything at the exact level it was available, but when I was leveling my first job, no one did. Which people always tend to forget. Everyone didn't have Brown belt at 40, Haub at 59, etc, but people want to demand it now.

If people have decent gear, I really don't care, I've never taken the game that seriously.

??? Oh, wait. I thought the title of this thread was how pimp is to pimp. I'll take my leave now.

Well, it's a matter of opinion. If you happen to be in a party and get a level or two more than expected (to the point where you don't have the gear ready yet, or your sub becomes underlevelled), that's fine. If, however, you make the choice to go right on seeking parties *after* that, rather than go and get your sub caught up or go and get (insert useful and cost-effective item here)... that's more of a concern.

The former is totally understandable, obviously you're not gonna ditch your party to go off and level your sub, but the latter basically says you don't care when you go off and get *more* parties when you're in a state of "need to get caught up with other stuff first".

If you're gonna take the time to get the sub levelled or get the item sooner or later anyway, and you're not in a party at that very moment, why the hell not do it sooner rather than later? It'll make you that much more effective for the levels between when you can get it, and when you would have otherwise gotten around to getting it.

There's a much larger margin for understanding and forgiveness on the subject of gear, if it's your first job. You simply don't have as many options for money making. So somewhat subpar is fine (but massively gimp still isn't). There's really no excuse for subjobs though, whether you're new or not.

i crossed paths with a taru not long ago that was soloing his sam in the Kon. Highlands. i was resting and he checked me before asking me about my job. he then went on to describe how happy he was that he hit 15 on sam and finally got third eye............for his Monk. i had to do a double take on my screen to be sure i read that correctly. that was the slap in the face. the punch to the gut was "and soon i'll be using backhand blow every 4 hits, its gonna be awesome!"

reading those words left me completly speachless for a good 5 minutes. i ask the kid about his warrior's lvl and he confesses it's lvl 10. i suggest to him that warrior would serve him alot better but he just blows it off convinced that /sam is better for monk then /war. i cut the convo at that point.

you can always try to help. but if said person doesnt want the advice its best not to force it and let them learn on their own. but personally i fear for anyone that exp's with that kid.

Whoa, (off topic I know) but what did Meeze get banned for o.0
