Hurricane Katrina

This thing is friggin nuts, it took out homes left and right, took out that longs ass highway like it was a toy. Hope you all are ok where you are. Sorry if i dont have that many words of encouragement, but right now you dont need words you need the worlds biggest sponge. Some houses are 18 feet underwater. Its hard to just imagine that. I'm glad i'm in Jersey, worst thing we have to put up with is the smell.

ps: Cubs, as soon as you switch avatars, I'm claiming that one as my own

Please forgive me if my typing is a bit messy. I have been stuck in a house for about two days waiting out the storm. Most of the television that my family and I watched was nonstop hurricane coverage (more like bombarded with) and reports. So ya... I have a little bit of cabin fever. @.@

It is very fortunate that Pensacola and most of the florida panhandle did not suffer much damage from the outerbands of Katrina. The family went eastward into Santa Rosa county, where there was not any damage that can compare with what has happened over in areas of Mobile (60 miles away), Biloxi, Gulfport, and New Orleans (300 miles away). Power flickered but we did not have any long time power outages (neighbors who stayed in Pensacola reported that power was out for about 7 hours). Some houses that were on the beaches and the bluffs did take flooding and there are sides of some houses missing. That is the risk people take for living near the water.
My heart goes out to the people that suffered more castrophic damage.

A good number of roads and bridges are closed and people are being advised by the local news to not sightsee because of gas shortages and the many emergency workers that are around estimating damages in the area. They have also informed any residents of the Mississippi and Louisiana areas to not try to return home because of major highway and interstate closings (police will not let anyone back in as of now) due to evaluations and possibly recovering bodies from the areas.

And for those who have survived, it is hot along the gulf coast. Temperatures are around 90 degrees with a heat index close to 100 degrees.

It will be a long road to recovery for everyone affected in the area.

I've been thinking of something to post on this thread for a few days and i still can't come up with anything good... but i'm posting anyway.

I've lived in NOLA for 4 years now... i can think of at least 8 people who i know stayed behind and haven't heard from. For those who lived in the gulf coast and evacuated, i hope you all are alright. I know for the group i am with, all we can do is look at the TV in horror. I'm sure it's the same for many.

If anyone is in the Houston area and wants to have a lunch or something... i donno, just to see a friendly face that is going through something similar, send me a PM or something. For those who don't know if their loved ones made it out... look at community sites for that area. I know for new orleans, a lot of people are posting at the local craigslist (neworleans.craigslist.org i think) asking for information, and apparently some are getting responses.

People in NOLA have been saying since last year that they had a bad feeling about the upcomming hurricane season... unfortunatly it seems they were right. anyway, god bless to those directly effected by this, at least i was just renting and was getting ready to move away... for those who actually owned homes, and who worked there longterm... I donno, there isn't much i can say... 'good luck', 'i'm sorry', 'it will be ok'... none of those phrases fit.

Know that many people are thinking of you, that many people are aware, and are made speachless by this event. Already people are making efforts to help on their own, i guess that is the best thing to take solace in. Again, for those directly influced look at community web sites, they will probably have the information you are looking for before anywhere else does.

When i heard...

"A local football stadium is now filled with water. The water level has gotten so high it has come on par with the field goal post."

Hope everyone in New Orleans will make it through ok.

Mayor of New Orleans estimates at least 1000 dead. No counts have been made yet though, they are still focusing on getting people who are still alive off of their roofs.

Considering this is the worst natural disaster in the history of civilized America, please pray for the thousands of families that were affected by this horrific storm.

6 Families came to our school today... they had their car and the clothes on their back... thats it... they are enrolling their kids in our school... our guidance counselour doesn't even have access to their school records because their transcripts were destroyed... their entire future has been affected by Katrina...

I can't imagine what these people are going through. God-bless them all.

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Isaiah 43: 1-2

there a good note to this more help will be coming soon. I work in a navy squadran and we are getting ready along with every othe helo squadron to deploy out and help the effected areas. I hope all in that area is safe and hope to see though who have posted to post agian

A little update.

This is all I've heard so far but from a friend who got out of Mississippi before Katrina hit, told me that Anglis (person who made this post) and Jobe both made it through ok. I'm sure some of you know both of them. I don't know for sure, I haven't heard from them myself, but it's a little hope put back into things.

I hope more people make it through this ok and are safe. My prayers and thoughts go out to those who have lost their lives, and their families.

Anyone who might be going in to help with the Armed Forces, be safe and take care.

Reading the newspaper today... and im sure it's on the news, but I dont watch the news often..

It's bad... I believe the quote was something like "They're just pushing aside the dead to get to the survivors" as in priority of the search and rescue teams.

Death toll is atleast 100 in Miss. County alone, maybe even higher...

It was incredibly stupid to "sit this one out" in a town that's below sea level. ; ; I hope our friends are alright.

The worst damage was done after the storm hit, almost a full day after. Levee's failed, pumps failed and were clogged or not working. From what I read in todays paper, it could be weeks to months before those who did flee NO could return to their homes. This was a huge disaster, I don't pray, but I wish everyone there the best of luck in recovering.

A lot of people didn't have a choice to leave or stay. New Orleans is a very poor city... there are lots of people without cars, many with out credit cards or the fiscal ability to rent cars...

Zaltana, for example, a RL friend, doesn't have a car, he gets around by bike... the fact that the mayor didn't use the RTA busses to get people out is like... i donno it makes me sick. That said, this is hardly a time to be pointing fingers. Since i brought Zalt up, i don't know how bad the flooding was in his area, but he lives on the 2nd or 3rd floor of his appartment complex, and it is a an old bottling company made of brick and on a solid foundation... he *should* have surivived.

as if the levee break wasn't bad enough... but earlier today there was a guy with a AK47 just mowing people down...

Current news says that people will not be able to return for 4 months probably. What return means is unknown though... whether they mean return to live, or return to retrieve what might be left.

On my list there are still at least 5 people i have yet to hear from, others have many more i am sure.

better news in relation to this subject is that Houston is opening it's arms to the people who were stranded in the Super Dome. Georga Tech is taking in students from Tulane. Donno what U.N.O. or Loyola is doing with theirs... idk, just figured i would give a update, not like you aren't being bombarded with them on the news, but i am sure there are many who don't watch... and the papers only get published once a day.

There were a lot of people in disbelief that the hurricane would come in their area. Some of the people interviewed said things such as: “This area survived hurricane Camille.” Each hurricane is different.

Latest briefings (most of our stations have affiliates in the Alabama/Mississippi area WKRG www.wkrg.com is still doing live streaming video of the news reports):

Looting- It is a problem. The police have given up trying to stop the people from doing so and have even helped them with grabbing groceries (pershibles). Why? Well the food is going to be a loss anyways for the businesses.

Gas- some pipelines have been cut off or damaged so there are shortages in the gulf coast area. New Orleans is a major port as well so all the shipments will have to be redirected somewhere else. Long lines for ice, MREs (meals ready to eat), and bottled water are present. There are already notifications to conserve gas and electricity on the florida panhandle as well. Gas trucks are on their way with policemen monitoring the stations.

Psychological- It is very detrimental to loose property or perhaps, the only investment some of those people ever had. And if there were emergency provisions and supplies, they were probably lost in the properties. The heat plays a major role on a person as well. It is hard to sleep in such conditions and so many are tired, restless, and even suicidal.

Some of the stories are unbelievable. It has been hard to turn on the television.

Have recently found out that my parents made it through Katrina. Am headed to Long Beach MS with supplies for them and their neighbors tomorrow morning.

i just started reading this post. i dont come here much anymore, but i heard a friend was looking for me ( /wave Anelsy, Colo, Blast, Broozo). seeing all the humor and the people who were staying at the beginging put a tear to my eye.........

our town is nutz. i live about 1½ hours from new orleans. hotels are full, every apartment is rented, homes are selling, business' that were destroyed are being moved here, grocery stores have no fresh produce and have many bare shelves, there are violence problems at places that are sheltering people, places 30 minutes from here wont have power for weeks, lots of people still have family and friends unaccounted for, we cant go help people near new orleans because of all the viloence.........

we got really lucky.

i have been talking to people who stayed and are just gettin out of that area.........all the bodies and stranded people and morons with guns........

i hope the people who posted that they were staying got out and didnt have to go through that kind of hell to get out

Hello thought I would post this, if any of you have family or friends in the affected areas and can't contact them here is a link you can check for names.

http://gulfcoastnews.com/

They have a link to a large list of names of survivors and those still missing. You can search it by last names. You can also post people's name you are looking for I think. Hope this helps some of you in finding people.

I may not pray, but thank god that they got out.... after the OP and then seeing the devestation on the news, I was worried... I don't know them, but even so...

Elphaba and I are alive and well.

all of the stories you have heard are only a tip of the iceburg. what nasya said is correct. my apt building is very strong and sufered zero structural dmg. elphaba and i were in no danger from our home being destroyed and having our posessions taken away. we took numerous pictures both durring and after the storm. when we get to a more permanent location we will post them for you to see first hand to what mother nature can do with she gets seriously pissed off.

a basic recap on what happened to where we lived:

we went to bed the night before the storm was supposed to hit and woke up to no power (duh) and alot of howling sounds throughout the building. we walked around the building taking in what was happeneing from start to finish. when the storm finaly ended we were all simply outside talking normally and saying what we would be doing in a few days when we were back to normal. we soon realized normal would never come. elphaba was the one that actually noticed the water was still rising. we wernt worried yet but when we awoke the next morning that all changed. the water was almost 3 feet higher then it was when we went to bed, and was still rising. it got to the point when we couldnt even go to to the 1st floor cause of the water. the water was, and still is, highly toxic mixed with gasoline, sewage, and who knows what else. we spent most of our time onthe roof till rescues began about 3 days l8r.

elph and i managed to get boated out but we had to wade through that disgusting water for about half a mile to a mile to try to get to the area that wasnt flooded. a cop that took us from our apt building took us out of the building but ditched us at a police station that couldnt shelter us. i took the remainng group to my work where people we call "stormriders" were supposed to be still there. we got there but the SR's got evaced long ago. elph was dissheartened but i refused to give up. i took her to a place at the end of canal st. to plan our next move. i REFUSED to take my girlfriend to that hell holes that the convention center and the superdome had become. we fell in with a group of avout 55 or so tourists that we clicked with. we all slept on the concrete steps of the canal st. ferry and got taken to an evac point the next morning.

the evac side was no picnic. it smelled strongly of the bodies that were recently removed before we arived, im glad elph didnt have to see that, and of human waste. our group banded together to make sure we stayed as 1 group and to get out as a group. and 12 hours l8r we all did. at 8pm, 2 school busses were aquiered by some state troopers for us to get our group out. we traveled all the way to baton rouge where we were denied entry to the airport due to overcrowding. we had to go to alexandria, la to get out of the state. most of the group had to get to houston cause they already had reserved flights and othersw had to get whole new flights cause their airlines canceled their flights. but none really complained cause we got wat we hoped for, "to get out of new orleans".

elph's mother had to reserve a ticket from the tiny airport, it only had 3 destinations, Atlanta, Houston & Memphis. she goofed it and booked it for the 10th by mistake even though it was the 3rd :P. it took a total of 6 days to get to my family. i was the last of my entire family to leave the city and our mothers screamed with relief and delight when they heard our voices alive and well. i omited the really bad things we witnessed cause the news has told u most of it. and they are not exaggerating.

my city is ruined. the dome and the convention center will forever be branded with horrible reputations that followed the storm. elph and i well not be returning there to live. our 2 cats, that we were forced to leave behind, are our main and last priority of things that must be done before we leave for north dakota. we have good leads on gettin gthem out and we are confident that they will be returned to us. we layed out as much food as we had, a few weeks worth, and enough water to last even longer then that. they may be thinner but they will be alive and with us again. we dont know when we will be able to return to the game but we are comming back for certain. i'll have to relearn how to play my rdm and my smn, not to mention thf and blm for elph, but im looking forward it. i will be around posting so i'll keep up with whats going. thank you all for the kind words and support for those of us that were hit by that bitch of a storm Katrina.

Zaltana

I'm really glad you guys are safe. It's really sad that this had to happen, and if there's something I could do for you, let me know.

Is there anyone else in the area that's from Quetz. and still missing?

There was that Angelis (SP?) guy who started a thread telling that he was going to "ride out the storm". He hasn't posted since.... :?

Hope and pray for the best. My school is taking in 200 students from New Orleans Jesuit HS, so tomorrow will be an interesting day.

Glad to hear you and Elph are okay Zaltana, and I hope your kitties come out alright.
