I have a PL....

When I came into this thread, I thought you meant powerleveling crafts by spending tons of gil and disregarding the fact that you don't break even/profit off synths. Thanks for the fucking disappointment, I was going to unleash the fury on this thread.

Owait..."I have a PL"...Does that make sense for the above statement?

ooooohhh, I see my mistake.

Fix'd.

PLing is stupid and breeds more stupidity.

I don't care if you've got Maat's Cap and five of every relic weapon, there is no person playing FFXI who is above the basics.

PLing is the new/old thing! I feel sorry for this new breed of WHMs with no capped Healing Magic or knowledge of WHMing.

Back in the ancient times when I was leveling WHM, I was a major dick about powerlevelers. I threatened to leave a party or two unless the PL stepped back and let me do my job. It's boring as fuck for a WHM in a PL party.

When I level melee jobs? I shut the fuck up. I don't really like it -- especially when a PL turns up for a party in the 60s -- but I let it be. Auto-attack isn't nearly as much fun as WHM in Onzozo, so I couldn't get bent out of shape that the PL was harshing my buzz.

I did this too when I was lvling Whm. I'd tell the Pl to either calm down or I'd just leave. No point in me being there leeching exp. Hell, I even left dunes pts cause I was trying to learn my job(Whm was my first job through the dunes) when they had PLs.

Good hate control doesn't exist at low levels. Ninja flat out sucks before Utsusemi: Ni. Don't act like you're gaining really valuable experience when you have almost nothing to do your job properly. Most job-defining abilities/spells come in the 30's; before then you're no where close to that level of effectiveness.
Thanks for the detailed post I'm glad to see so many put thought into this subject too. I agree to an extent with you that it is alot harder to maintain hate control and recasting shadows pre 37 but by the early to mid 30's they should be getting the hang of timing down, it takes little effort to realise that if you cast shadows as its about to hit theres a good chance you will be interrupted, however watching the mobs movements allows you to time your casting better, (In much the same way a well timed shield bash or flat blade can stop an explosion) Ninjas learn to manage their talent before Ni I think, getting Ni just gives them a huge aid in doing their job better.
As far as skills go, it's not like you can't get them a little later and you're also not going to be power leveled your entire career.
I've seen lv 75 whm's PL a lv 70 party in the Mire, despite the risk probably to the PL too. Some people get used to having it about always.

It is personal arrogance to try to deny a group a power level just because you personally don't like it. If you're against it, leave, but don't fuck over 5 other people just because you don't like power levels.
I've never screwed a group over for those reasons, I never said I refused PL myself all the time, the point of my post was just the amazement that a tank (In a game where tanks are so rare it seems any level) has to advertise they have a PL in there seek. Are they that uncertain of their abilites that they need to dangle the PL bit? Thats all I'm asking.

I don't give a shit about PL's. I just hate people that dual box to PL themselves and either suck/fail at PLing or doing the job they are supposed to be doing. Like tanking and not voking so the PL gets hate. Or DD'ing and not engaging at all. Or healing and not doing shit the entire party.

In the 30's, you shouldn't need a power level. White mages have raise, so no worries if someone dies. Ninja, though is hugely different once you get Ni. 37 is their transition from "gimp DD who doesn't take much damage so tries to tank" to TANK.

Yeah, that's just beyond pathetic.

No, it's just something to distinguish themselves from the other nameless players who could fill their role. It's no different than advertising certain pieces of gear, merits, subjobs or anything else people put on their search comments to help them get a party.

I was leveling in Altep last weekend with a NIN. His search comment was: Veteran, PL you can have this!

He never casted Utsusemi and let me tank >.>. We got nice EXP but something like that is really annoying.
Worst thing I had so far was in the dunes with a brd who was naked. Not even had an instrument. HE wanted to pull and said he is alright since he had a PL. What happened was, he died 3 times and then disbanded...

But again, for every horror story you can give about a pl, I can give you the same without a pl. The IQ of the player is not tied to the fact they have a pl or not. Stupid people are just plain stupid.

My leveling days as whm, i had no pl. And for rdm as a matter of fact. Not saying that I'm leet or anything, far from it. But I hate how ppl say "I will leave a pt because there is a pl." I think you guys have your head up ur ass. Everyone needs some help here and there. It's not hard to do some research into your job and to use ur spells effectively (if ur a mage). I've had some good help from veterans too when i was a noob. So if all the ppl in this thread are against pls, i think that u all are a bit hypocritical. How many times in a pt have u linked a mob and wiped because ur mages couldnt heal because of low or no mp? How much faster have you gotten xp because you can constantly pull mobs and not rest in between pulls for mp? A pl from levels 1-30, maybe abit higher, is alright in my book.

Let's face it, low level doesnt give much in terms of learning your job effectively. What JAs and other tools do tanks have to keep hate. Most times hate gets shifted easily between low level pld and nin that mages and other DDs get hit often. I mean yeah, a person with half a brain and a pt that controls their nuking/damage output is better than a pt that goes balls to the walls on nuking and ws to impress ppl. Things get better I think in the 40s.

I can give horror stories with or without PL XD thats right. Just wanted to give my encounter with stupid people with PL. I can post many horror stories without PL as well, if you wanna hear them

Get the smores and campfire ready, I'm all ears

Here's an example:

WAR75/NIN37:
str merits: 5/5 axe merits: 5/5
6/6 Runic Portals
{Please invite me.}

or

WAR75/NIN37:
xp/merits {Can I have it?}

Which would you choose to party with?

I don't define having outside assistance "help" in this sort of circumstance. The new players don't learn as well as they should, the old players don't reinforce their basics, and in general, everyone plays on a level lower than what they normally would, "because there's a PL". Faster EXP isn't "help", and some things can't be learned just by reading about them on paper.

I don't think you know what the word "hypocritical" means. If you make mistakes, you suffer a penalty for them. That's the point. Having someone around to negate mistakes hampers the learning process, at best.

While the jobs indeed don't start to grow into themselves until the 40s or so, 10-30 or so are the absolute basics of a party. The jobs aren't as powerful in their own right, but to say there is nothing to learn, or keep refreshed on, is a joke.

Here's an example:

WAR75/NIN37:
str merits: 5/5 axe merits: 5/5

Tough call seeing as how axe merits would be 5/8.

The main goal for me in this game in xp parties is to gain as much xp as I can, as quickly as I can. Most ppl will agree to this. Having "outside assistance" lets you maximize xp/per hour as opposed without one. Simple as that. You can still do your job and learn it with a PL. Every situation is different. A powerleveler is like having an Empress Band. It's an enhancment. Makes things better.

That may be true, but if you link a mob and you realize that mistake, you will try not to do that again right? The PL will make sure you don't die and hopefully you learn to not do that again. Whereas if there isn't one (pl) you will waste time recovering from weakness status. Remeber the goal of xp pts? Maximum xp/time.

Not saying there isn't anything to not learn. To me, at this point in the game I just want to get some jobs to where I want them to be and concentrate on end-game stuff. But lets face it Garvin, you must have had a PL in your pt once in ur time in this game. Has it been a good and effective pt? Just my question to you.

Which ever one didn't suck at their job. If the top WAR was, for the sake of argument, Antdog, and the bottom one was Jamal, I'd take Jamal with no merits over Antdog with full merits.

If you can't figure out your job pre 30 when you have 1 or 2 JAs and a limited amount of spells that you actually use, just because there is a PL in your pty, GL in end game. If the person is brand new to the game then there might be some problems later on but how many people are actually bringing their first job through the dunes as opposed to their 5th+ job through there.
