This is going to sound rant-ish but I really don’t care.
I am not flaming any particular person or group so this
doesn’t belong with the flame rants..
I ask that even though this is long that whomever reads this finish it.
I prefer to think of this as an announcement to the community
and a suggestion for everyone to follow..

I have been playing almost one year now.. I have gotten to know a lot
of people within the game.. and I am seeing some behavior that I don’t
like and some of the people I have run across have tried to get me to
emulate their behavior.

I play for fun, and I play the game to meet people I would normally never have met.
does anyone still remember what that’s like?

To all who read this consider it a declaration of action
I am going to resume playing Final Fantasy XI when I am done with this post
and I am no longer going to put up with the darker side of the game.

Here is a short list of some of the things I see daily on the darker side of the game.
The belief and attitude that if you do not have THIS super expensive
set of armor/weapon/ring/socks/eye color that you are "gimped"
This is complete bullshit! Gear does not make the player the player makes the gear!

I will play my job Pld/War to the best of my ability... if you do not like it
and think yourself important enough to criticize me
(NOTE: Criticize me, not help me to do better) or save yourself the time and me the aggravation, avoid me.

If you as a player do not like the Japanese Players... keep it to yourself!
I will ask nicely that you refrain from making said remarks again and I will
tell you why if you fail to respect my request. You will suddenly find that I do not respond to the things you say (this means I will black list) I would also like to add... that the Japanese players are not gods, they have bad players in their ranks same as we do.

If you as a player think that "lady gamers" are weaker minded, less tactical thinkers, and are
not aggressive enough or are non-confrontational...think again!
Also I for one do not enjoy being referred to as “bitch” “ho” “woman”
or that word that begins with a C! I for one want the same things you boys do. I have never been
handed anything I work for what I have, and when it comes
to me and things I want. I, like you, will step over anyone or anything
that gets in my way. So, do not treat me as a child or as an object!

You who read this may forget that people play this game
on EVERY SINGLE CONTINENT! So, yea you might run into someone
that doesn’t speak English or Japanese, this does not make them a gilseller.
Even if they are camping something your camping accept this and move on.

Bias against other player’s sexual orientation -

First, let me get this out in the open now.
I am almost 26 years old... I am a woman, and I am bi-sexual.

I have met a wonderful woman with the game. (*waves* Hi Aerdrie!)
Now that you all know, I need to clear something up
knowing this does not give you the right to call me any names! or to tell me
I am violating some law from god or threaten to tell everyone I am

When you are trying to be a funny, and you toss out "gay" or "fag"
you may be in fact speaking in the presence of someone like myself.
That person is someone you might consider a good friend, and you may have
just hurt them very badly. From this point on if a player does something like
tossing these types insults around so casually
I will ask nicely one time for them to stop and if they do not.
They will cease to exist to me. (This means blacklist)

I hope this has made sense to everyone that reads it. From this moment on I will be playing to have fun. I know deep down that there many people will not care for my way of thinking, and I am sure that the list of people that will never want to talk to me again will get longer.
I might get black balled or banned from ever joining a HNM/Sky/Dynamis linkshell and I am ok with this. Because I know where the Add/Remove Programs function on my computer is.
From this moment on I play for fun.
 
You're social life is noone's business but yours, same with your religion, this game is for fun.. I completely agree with you.

I agree with everything you said 100% pretty much, but have a small issue with this part. Player ability doesn't do all that much in this game- not for all jobs anyway. I don't think super expensive items should be mandatory, but I do think people should recognize that the numbers one sees on the screen, and the corresponding drop in mob HP isn't a result of FFXI calculating your player skill. It's calculating your stats, and the only way to increase your stats is with appropriate gear. I've never liked the skill vs gear debate as I think it's a false dichotomy. Skilled players know why they need good stats. So long as you're not condoning slacking and laziness, I'll back you here too. The definition of luxury over the years has changed, as has the definition of what's expensive. Sometimes it's best not to think about mandatory vs luxury and just do the best you can with your time/abilities.
 
A skilled player with crappy gear is better than a crappy player with incredible gear. However a skilled player with incredible gear is best.

I'm not overly anal about gear but I do expect people to at least put some effort into the game and wear what's appropriate for their level. I will never boot someone for not having a scorpion harness but if you're in my level 70 party and wearing seer's slacks...buh bye.

Sphene, i love you ^^ You are one of the few people on this server that i have connected with, wanting to accomplish the same goals as myself. Priortizing yourself first, to get to a high enough level to be able to help others. Its admirable in my book, and you are one of my favorite Bigfunners.

You should recognize that not only this game, but the world is full of assholes who will make comments about something being "gay" or someone being a "fag" because of some action that has taken place. I wouldnt take that as a personal insult, but rather as an act of incompetence for not realizing what the words they say actually mean. Sure when i was a young lad i called my friends "Fags" as a joke, but after realizing what harm the insults can do, i refrain from such gestures.

Needless to say, you know ill be around for ya, and even though we play the same job, i hope that i can somehow help you attain something that compares to what you have helped me realize, which is that this is a GAME, and that i play to have FUN.

/clap You hit dead on, most people take this game way to seriously and need to lighting up alot, some people can be such assholes, the worst is when someone thinks ur doing a job wrong and tell you how to do it
If you think your so good at it you fucking be the whm, its not my fault you trained 3 mobs and died, cant blame me for this one retard...

But ya sadly.....on the gear issue....it is rather important to have at the very least decent gear. And if you honestly want a more skill based game go play Guild Wars......^^; sorry sphene not harshing on you I promise and you know that. Again wove ya bunches.

Lol and having the fun part of the game is why I am, the majority of the time, in character. I think more people should role play in game. Adds a bit of spice to gaming life.

I definately understand where you're coming from, but I have to ask: Knowing how some people are less understanding then others, why share your personal things like religion, sexual preference, personal relationships, and such with them? That's like setting a gun in front of mass murderer and saying "don't kill me."

I for one tend to prefer japanese parties over english, mainly because I don't have to type so I can kick back, drink and sing along to some CD's while playing in Hi-Def on my 360 :B. Nor do I have a problem with women. I just feel that some of your actions may have led you to this point of mysery, is all. I mean, like I said, don't tell others what you don't want thrown back in your face. It doesn't mean don't tell anyone, just tell people who you trust and know will be sensible and mature about it. Otherwise, you're just asking for it.

PS: FFXI is a game to most, and more to some people. It's as though life itself is so bad as that FFXI is an escape from it. I won't lie, sometimes I feel that's how it is for me, but I'm just saying. Always expect someone to take this game to be more than that, because to that particular person it is. Some people see football as just a game, but to me it's more than that. It's what built the discipline that I carry myself with now.

You mean people don't play this game for fun? o.O Yeah, I agree the competition is retarded with who's a better player at this job or who has the best gear in the game. The adventure in the game is what makes it a whole lot of fun, and doing what we can and discovering the world our own way and with friends.

Whether you play sometimes on your own or with friends, either way you play, you're always doing something different to occupy your entertainment. All that other useless drama is unnecessary.

Trust me Sphene, you wouldn't want to get in some HNMs/Sky/Dynamis LSs, they can often be filled with the things you hate, even if most try to have fun, there will always be those who want to be better than everyone and ruin the fun with competition. No matter how much you try to get the message across, they may never see the game the way you do.

Yet in my opinion the very best players are those that just want to play the game for fun like you and most others, and their own way and not worry what others think.

I think she doesn't mind telling the world because she doesn't care what others think about her, but just want to be who she is and not allow others to tell her who she should be, no matter how much misery they try to cause her or criticisms.

With that, it's getting a message across to just be yourself and ignore and avoid things that come out to pain you. There's always the never-ending conflict that we can't block completely, but we can try the best we can to be who we are instead of being who others want us to be.
 
Just wanted to say that though i've never disrespected or been rude in any form to a person who didn't have the best gear (I myself never have the +1 gear worth millions for a job) I do think that being able to outdamage and excell at my job when in party is what I consider to be fun.

I have my opinions, but most of the time I will keep them to myself because everyone does have the choice to play the game the way they want to and I respect that, but for mostly everyone that has posted here I think you should consider the fact that there are people that really do enjoy seeing their cures do amazing numbers, seeing their attacks completely wipe a monster. That to me = fun.

I"m completely with you on the gear thing, I think its really sad to see people that will not allow a player into the group because they don't have a SH, a Vermy etc.... I've seen players that can do their job VERY efficiently and even though their numbers aren't as high, they're doing the tasks required in party (and besides usually those numbers aren't that too far apart =P)

In regards to how people will think of you because of your lifestyle, as long as you aren't hurting anyone then it really doesn't matter. Be the way you are because those people have nothing better to do than waste their breath fussing about something they disagree with which would really only be their loss. If those people mean nothing to you, then so should their opinions.

I don't see anything wrong with the way you play Sphene, so keep it up :)
 
I'm more awake than I was at 1:45 AM this morning and I've got my coffee now.....MMMMMM.....coffee *drools a little*.....so here's my reply Sphene ^^

I haven't known you a really long time but I think your great and I enjoy talking with you because we seem to share alot of the same attitudes about accepting people. I also agree with the bit about gear, having all HQ items would break anyone's tolerance for gil-hoarding. I started to write a very long and drawn-out reply but I've decided to spare anyone reading this thread and keep it short...It's also alot easier to make myself understood in direct conversation with someone than it is with the normal statement vs reply method employed in a forum. See you in the game <(^.~)>
