I agree with sphene.People kinda care about gear so much that fun is gone.

Oh, I'm not trying to burn her or anything like that. I'm just saying, people who are not understanding will go out of their way to exploit a persons "weakness," or really just anything that they can rip on. So, please before anyone thinks I was trying to be rude, I wasn't. I'm just trying to point out why some of this happened, so the mistake isn't made twice y'know? There's a lot of people who are out of line with their actions.

I mean, let's be honest. People are not all kind hearted. They're greedy, self centered, and want everything to work out for them. Thats why they demand the best gear out of others. Really, is it their business? You get together, you play, and you do your best job you can. Gear means shit, so long as you're not a lvl 40 paladin tanking with beetle equipment, y'know? It's to a degree. If you have half the defense at your level than possible and you're a tank, you should spend some time crafting to make money other than grinding levels y'know? Enjoy every aspect of the game to make yourself better at it.

Gear aside though, the angst, prejudice, and hostility of some people have in fact ruined the game for many people. That's why, the easiest thing to do, is /blist them and keep going. You'll fine some real friends, and some "abusers." Just try to make a distinction between them.
 
I know you weren't making a personal attack against her and know what you're saying. Sphene just seems to be the strong type of person in my opinion that will shrug it off to be who she wants to be.

There are those who will make it out of their way to hurt or offend a person, but after a while if they aren't accomplishing to get a reaction, they might just give up after a while.

It is a shame that most players aren't on the same line of playing and thinking this way though, which makes it more of a challenge in the game to avoid these, and lessens the fun, but if we just stay together with those who want to have nothing but fun, then that can strengthen together to avoid those who will criticize and make their way out to bring out your negative emotions.

So, yeah, I pretty much agree, within certain boundaries of common decency, nitpicking about little gear deficiencies is pretty silly.

Nah, I think you made a brave step in bringing up something so potentially confrontational and got some positive feedback. I agree with the points you were carrying accross, as I see most people do as well, and will back you up on them.
 
Just wanted to add that sphene is an extremely intelligent woman, very business minded person, fair, and bold. You wont scam her, you wont "own" her, and she will personally Kick your A$$ if you mess with her or her friends.

Sphene, i have not known you for long but with the little time we've spent talking i have come to admire and respect you as a person, and friend. I stand 100% behind you and your beliefs. And anyone who Harasses her, will not only get some PLD shield bash in the face, but a NIN stab in the neck, and a manthra tail slap to go with it.

Play for fun, cause this expansion has only begun.

I have to agree with Sphene and a lot of people who already responded in the thread that some people in the game do behave rather ill-mannered.
Sometimes its for things that don't relate to the game just because they take things out of context, or play the game with different reasons.

Usually a lot of these kind of people are pretty dramatic when things don't go their way, and easily lose sight of why the game was instated for.

In some cases, people like these may try to impede on your progress in the game by trying to drag you down with the crowd.

Personally I think its sad, dumb, and silly that they would go through such an effort and extent. There is more to this game than just finding something to cling on. When you find these things, FFXI becomes tons of fun.

Some people may not agree with me because we all come from different backgrounds. I, for example, was raised as a gamer, so... I play videogames like a game. For fun, challenges, and to unwind/relax. Hey its a game!! Enjoy it, otherwise, why do you play it? :-D

Now don't get me wrong, I do value a lot of the friendships I have in the game, as well as, have respect for a lot of people I've met. So in a sense, the game means a little more to me than it seems. Likewise, is the case with most of us.

So to conclude on that, I'm all for your declaration to play for fun. :-D
I can see a lot of people support you in, and out of the this thread.

Hehe.. I've gone back and leveled a number of little jobs for the sake of...well..having fun. And I've noticed the comments are few and far between anymore, but sometimes I've gotten little comments like "Another Broke Rank 10 Leveling Ninja" or what have you. Honestly, I've spent so much time listening (and subsequently ignoring) what people tell me can't be done, I've come to the inevidible conclusion... I LIKE TUNA! What I mean is.. I dont care what people say, I've got my own reasons for using what I use. I ask for advice, I test the advice, and I keep going. I've learned TONS of things from other people (toooo many to count, and the list keeps growing), and not only by just having them tell me about it--I actually tried it and made it work for me.

My choice in armor ususally rests on the fact that I only have 80/60 inventory and it is essential that I can store as much as possible. There is a one level when studded armor (I think thats the name..might be banded) is actually better than chainmail, but only for one level, and then its on to silver chainmail. For me, these levels go by too fast for me to worry about that little gain for that, so I usually go from Chainmail to Silver then Platemail.

Even still... personally.. I really enjoy making people upset with job combinations. Its the same reason Ive been known to wear odd clothing or two shoes of different colors. People just go totally insane when they see things that break their accepted ideal of the world. You should have heard the comments I got soloing NIN/BRD or when I suprised my friends goofing around as WHM/DRG (I waiting for random times to "Jump"...took them a while to catch on... it was priceless). And...I got more than one cheer using a Mace as a Paladin.

I will never argue the numbers, and if it came to a clincher, I equip to win as I can (as gil being available). But when it comes down to it.. I'm much happier if I can get a laugh out of the people in my LS than if I out damage the Taru Dragoon. The numbers are just too boaring for me... The people are what keeps me comming back.

Sphene, I have a friend who is exactly like you, and I told her about your post too. She would love you for this post. She's also Bi too, but it doesn't matter to be since we are the greatest of friends and I respect her for who she is. She wants to play this game for fun and normally enjoys the way the JP play compared to Americans since the JPs normally play for fun.

Although there are a whole lot out there that want to play for fun too, as we can see from those who posted here. Some just get too caught up in the game as if it's real life or are just foolish.

Here is a short list of some of the things I see daily on the darker side of the game.
The belief and attitude that if you do not have THIS super expensive
set of armor/weapon/ring/socks/eye color that you are "gimped"
This is complete bullshit! Gear does not make the player the player makes the gear!

I will play my job Pld/War to the best of my ability... if you do not like it
and think yourself important enough to criticize me
(NOTE: Criticize me, not help me to do better) or save yourself the time and me the aggravation, avoid me.

If you as a player do not like the Japanese Players... keep it to yourself!
I will ask nicely that you refrain from making said remarks again and I will
tell you why if you fail to respect my request. You will suddenly find that I do not respond to the things you say (this means I will black list) I would also like to add... that the Japanese players are not gods, they have bad players in their ranks same as we do.

If you as a player think that "lady gamers" are weaker minded, less tactical thinkers, and are
not aggressive enough or are non-confrontational...think again!
Also I for one do not enjoy being referred to as “bitch” “ho” “woman”
or that word that begins with a C! I for one want the same things you boys do. I have never been
handed anything I work for what I have, and when it comes
to me and things I want. I, like you, will step over anyone or anything
that gets in my way. So, do not treat me as a child or as an object!

You who read this may forget that people play this game
on EVERY SINGLE CONTINENT! So, yea you might run into someone
that doesn’t speak English or Japanese, this does not make them a gilseller.

Been like... what... 40 levels? lol Get your ass on game more often, and you'll have a PRO BLM along your side! (/'.')/ Nothing's more fun than forgetting to provoke after I bust out a huge Magic Burst, having the mob flatten me. Some of my favorite moments ingame have been (|death|) related! Example:

Last night, Wyvernpoacher Blahblah (The Goblin NM in Gustav Tunnel) popped, and we decided to try to take it down... our party was 57-60, with me being the only 60 as BLM. 6 people... we took him down, as a RNG, WAR, NIN, WHM, BLM, BRD party with Evalice (NIN) and Nasty (very solid RNG, much better than the one we had earlier in that EXP session) kiting the mob back and forth, with Eva using my Wind Staff. Only casualty we had was yours truly, where I took an Eagle Eye Shot from him for 950 cutting through Stoneskin and missing all my Blink shadows. My first reaction was "LMAO", as he just kinda turned mid-stride, glanced at me and BAM I was eating tunnel dust. I got raised, recovered from weakness, and we took him down about 8 minutes total. One of the more intense battles I've bad in this game to date, and I got freaking smoked, but had a great time, instead of bitching about how a DD shoulda "provoked". No drop, though. ; ;

Had fun at WHM Body AF the other night as well - keep playing, keep having fun, and shake dem haterz off!

Where to begin... Sphene, you are my best friend! I applude you for posting and letting everyone know what you believe and how you feel. You are the kind of person that will go out of her way to help someone. In the game and in the real world. You help your friends as much as you can with what you have. And, you help people that have yet to become your friend. One great thing about the way you are... (in/out of game) is you still generally give everyone the benefit of the doubt when it comes to people. You assume people are good until it is clear to you that they are not. Then... Altana help them! If you get walked on or taken for granted, that doesn't stop you from helping someone else. It shows how strong you are.

I know how angry you were the day someone (not naming names) aggrivated you for happily listing Aerdrie in your bazaar comment. I think it was just that the guy was jealous that you chose another woman over him. Really! Some people just cant handle that people are different and some make different choices.

That said... much that goes on in game is the same as in the real world, sometimes its just harder because you cant 'walk away'. Sure, you can blacklist and ignore them. Sometimes, its harder. Like the time I left a party because the leader and a friend kept calling each other 'gay' and 'fag'. I was nice, I suggested that it was impolite and asked them to stop. They didn't. I apologized to everyone else in the party, disbanded and blacklisted the two. I felt bad for letting the other 3 people in the party down. But, it was no longer fun to play in that situation. As it where, when I was half way back to Selbina, the others disbanded, and we formed a new party.

Just one more little thing to remember... everyone occasionally has a bad day, don't hold that against them for the rest of there FFXI career. LOL!

This whole self-affirming bisexuality/homosexuality/whatever - ality on the internet gets completely out of hand and I think this is a prime example.. as others have posted on this thread, why do you really feel it is important to "come out of the closet" in a game? Who really gives a shit? All this thread has done is gotten people to say /em congratulations -- "well written" -- joy. If you don't like certain people's attitudes then ignore them but spare me the I'm gay and proud of it speech. Save it for your parents or haven't you told them yet? lol (busting your balls, don't /blacklist me) haha
