beating a dead horse with this issue but...

SUMMONERS ARE NOT WHITE MAGES!

after months of not leveling my 68 summoner i decide to take a party in one of the new areas. once i get there i see the party set up, bah.. no white mage. so not making a fuss i dont say nothing since there is a great bard there with refresh. first fight, (dont ask me what we were fighting but looked like bulls that respawn) party wipes. im spamming cure 3's like no tomorrow and barely healing people..
we relocate further in, 2nd fight we do ok and get 1k experience in 10 minutes or so. everyones happy again. 3rd fight with the mob and 2 members almost dead, i curaga 2 ftw. only 1 member dies besides me. ughh.
then someone wonders why i was only spamming cure 3 and not cure 4...
WTF??
then i got to hear bitching about how they party for 20 minutes for a loss of experience. disband party for the win!!
im not flaming anyone in particular, but CMON PEOPLE, you want a healer, call a friend or arrange a white mage beforehand. dont just invite a summoner to your party expecting he/she to main heal. IM NOT DOING IT ANYMORE.

BLOOD PACTS FTW!! for now on i'll sub black mage just to piss people off.

:banghead3:

What else are you supposed to do?
Melee??

lol

Summoners aren't White Mages - that much is apparent to anyone with knowledge of the english alphabet. Smn =/= Whm. However, Summoners are main healers. Red Mages can be main healers. Red Mages aren't White Mages. That said, the idiot that complained that you weren't casting Cure IV should get slapped a few times, and then a few more for good measure.

What is "main healer"? To start, it isn't "cure bot". You shouldn't need to spam Cure III just to break even. If you do, your party either sucks (most likely answer) or isn't suitable for a Smn main healer (Kuftal and Stona for example). Sabia is a good example of a Summoner who throws out BPs left and right (I finally got to try that Diabolos MA Bonus pact!) and still makes sure everyone is alive. If you know a taru named Lrron, he's another Smn you can watch to see Summoner style main healing in action. Main healing only means you're the scapegoat if anyone dies. Blms should be helping heal, and your tank should be holding hate. You shouldn't have too many troubles. Healing is a group effort. Summoners and White Mages are just the ones held accountable. Just like tanking - the blm might pull hate, but it's the tanks job to hold hate, so he'll most likely get the lecture should things go wrong. Fault doesn't matter. Parties just want to yell at someone when problems arise.

What was your tank? If paladin, I wouldn't be expecting a smn to main heal at all. Yeah, they can main heal, but no, if your tanking or the party sucks in general, people are gonna die and the 'healer' will probably get blamed.

Meh.... last time a blm pulled hate off me we lectured him.. some noob Neophytal guy who liked to spam -aga's like he was back in valkurm.. damn noobs piss me off.

I main healed for those things for a 67 taru paladin and we didn't have a single death - we were getting like 3k xp per Marid.

Now I don't know who was at fault for your party stinking, but I know for sure SMN can main heal in that situation even with paladin.

It's a Summoners own fault if they end up main healing for a party. Like RDM, you chose your role. Leveling as a healer will help you get main partys but don't lecture others for YOU choosing to play your SMN as a healer.

That logic can apply to any job. Every job can deal some damage. Every job can take some hits. Almost every job has some spells. Backline Drks acting like wannabe blms? Plds mainhealing or melee DDing? Monks tanking? Yeah anyone can technically play anyway s/he wants, but there's really only one way to play each job at any given level that'll allow you to get parties. Since when did anyone "choose" how to play their job. The community chose how I have to do each and everything I do in this game. Everything from how you cast Cure to what finger you use to select autoattack is carefully monitored by the FFXI Conformity Consortium - an organization led by the first JP to set foot in Vanadiel who wrote the unchangable rules. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking we have any REAL choice in anything we do in XI. It's your 12.95, but it's the community's $129,500.00, and if you melee with your Whm, you owe the entire community a refund. It's their game, not ours, after all. We're just granted the priveledge of operating one of the many boxes of one giant single entity who doesn't just dual box, doesn't triple box, but double-kilo-boxes. Think Passions times about 700 or so.

SMN's and THFs do retardedly well in Marid PT's

Although, at first it may seem like a waste of the THF, either their SA or TA can 1-hit a Chigoe, which is pretty sweet for dispatching them quickly. And a SMN doing main healing can leave their Carby out an dispatch a few stray Chigoes every minute with Meteorite in a single hit as well. Both jobs maintain the ability to perform outside their Flea cleaning duties, which makes them really well suited for that particular type of PT. However, keeping a SMN reigned in at a Marid camp or having people waste their WS on flees is foolish, there are much simpler ways to handle them for very fast, effective xp.

well myster, You have a point that ppl make you be main healer ... But some ppl are ok with it. Like that guy said... put no main healing in ur /seacom.

Personally as a Summoner id have to completely...

Disagree.

Main healing has to be done, and there arent always WHMs around.

Getting 70+ is a hard slog for any job. So sure main healing is boring as hell but SMNs have by far enough mp to do it sufficiently, AND do a bit of BloodPacting (unless youre some sorta galka type thing).

I really didnt mind the main healing bit that much, and it was by far worth all those boring pts by the time i got my 70 BPs. If you want the rewards put up with the shit. FFXI aint an easy ride.

I didn't choose BLM to team up with 4-15 other blms and to time our nukes perfectly and one hit anything in our way. I chose it because I like black mages in the previous final fantasys and didn't really wanna bash stuff with metal shiny things.

[edit] However, I'm not complaining really ;) Even I've main healed on my BLM once or twice before, it's just something that has to be done I guess, there can't always be WHMs or RDMs all the time. (when I say main heal, I mean once or twice on occaisions like the whm dieing or running out of MP mid fight.)

yet anouther case of think of your party! they need a healer, there are no whm searching, so guess what smn has alot of mp and ability to heal.

until SE really changes the way summoner works, and I can think of several ways to increase DoT w/out making the job 'too strong'

you can expect to main heal, or make your own parties.

If you don't main heal, making your own parties is really the only invite you are going to get.

I didn't like it when I was lvling SMN and had to main heal in a party, but what can you do about it? Most of the parties I was in, I was in as a main healer.

>> {Party?}
<< {yes, please} what's setup?
>> THF WAR WHM BLM DRK SMN
<< WHM!? I won't have to main heal!?
>> lol no
<< {excitement}

It felt like christmas. I got there, had carby out for one fight, and the WAR almost died. It turns out our WHM sucked and I had to heal anyways.

Moral of the story: Acctually I don't know where I was going with this, but I just found out one of my bosses just quit so I have to go celebrate in the break room. Good luck w/ summoner.

It's not a dead horse! OMG! Just because some Summoners will main heal (and some parties can actually work with a summoner main heal)-- does not make this your only alternative by any means! Ignore everything that has been said and I'll let you in on a few secrets! You're about as effective as a BLM healer-- the problem is in most cases you can't out DoT a BLM.

When in no other choice but to main heal: Stack up on - Enmity. It will save you from pulling hate from spamming cure. Mushroom Stew, Crow Gear, etc! Hope that the fights are swift and the mobs don't deal a lot of DMG. Honestly I am not familiar with the camp in question but I will openly admit to hating SMNer as a healer. I have a WHITE MAGE for that. It doesn't change at 70 folks, you will still get people wanting you to main heal.

I was in your shoes. It was bad, Bad I say! You got invited to the parties that I liked to consider the left-overs-- everyone that didn't get into the "most ideal party with the white mage seeking". You'd go in, give it your best and still the exp was below par-- and sometimes netting you less exp than you started out with. (Occassionally getting into a really good/decent party.) So, after a while.. enough is enough..

Go to the AH-- Make some space in your inventory. Buy a Reraise Hairpin. Go to the Signet NPC-- get a signet staff. Charge up your exp band. Shout for a tele-vahzl and hike up the mountain and go to the range.

Bombs! Yes, Bombs! Those annoying lil' things that take out alliances. Once you get used to it you can honestly say hello to 500+ exp depending on the chain you are on. Hello... Sandria reaches (insert level...) All the while racking up on kindred and beast seals ice crystals and snoll arms that I was turning around and crafting into seraph's kiss and getting a lil' pocket money.

I won't lie to you.. I did have a few stubbern fights. Bombs that were taking what felt like hours to kill because they refused to blow up. In my opinion the slow rounds of bombs was better than waiting with flag up or joining the parties that were not up to par. I could start and stop at my leisure.

Joined a party at around level 70 that had us set out to go to Sky. Was like a NIN, a DRK, a RDM, a BLM, and I don't recall the other job. I was under the impression that the RDM would healer-- they were under the impression that I was to heal and wanted me to earthen ward and do fenrir buffs.

oooooookay! I suggested, hey, the rdm might be better choice.. and they were like.. "Uh... how did you even get to 70 without main healing... you should be used to this by now..." @.@ Fine, fine, bite my tongue back. This is what they want and I'm bored.. so, okay. Fights were slow and the DRK was sending me tells "Hey, san, throw out a 70 Tier.. just do it..." And I was like, "No, no, that is not what they want.." Finally, I was like, what the hell..

Suddenly they agreed with me.

But, I will warn you.. it depends on the mobs. Summoner can be humbling.
