So you'd hear the same song over and over, or just when you were in a fight?

Specific events. You can change your music while in Bastok, while in battles, while roaming specific zones, etc.
Personally, no. I haven't touched music .dats in a while.
I believe there's a program called... Xing? This will allow you to play the .bgw files, or convert them to .wav, something. That will identify the songs and .dat files.
If I remember correctly you can take any .wav file, rename it to .bgw, and it should play in FFXI. But this is all sparse memory which has never been one of my strong points to begin with.
I had no idea. Can you shoot me a link to somewhere explaining how to do this?
I didn't notice anything of the sort when I swapped the boat and battle musics. Did you use Ximc? The problem I have with swapping area music (except cities and dynamis/besieged) is that the song's timer restart whenever you enter/exit combat. Also, and worse, for some reason the battle music will start at whatever time your new area music will stop when you enter combat... pretty weird(If you enter combat at 1:00, your battle music starts at 1:00)
I didn't get the feeling I was looking for whenever I swapped em but if you want to give it a try anyway I'm sure I can find something.
