Immigrant group offended by Halloween costume

Why would I? My parents were the suckers who decided to actually do it the legal way.

They did "crazy" things like "wait in line" and "obtain proper documentation" and "take a citizenship test".

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

On a side note: It's not like American's original asked nicely and filed paperwork before moving in, and the whole hub-bub over it is just neoconservative bullshit fueled by ignorant masses swallowing everything Hannity, Limbaugh, or Beck say.

That's right, I went there.

Nice try but if that wasn't the law 200 years ago then tough shit to the criminaliens now. If you want to condon laws broken against your country Mr. Patriot then your anything but.

Unless I'm confused about something, and please correct me if I am, the immigrants who came to Ellis Island on ships from Europe in the late 19th and early 20th century weren't breaking the law. They were invited here and went through due process when they arrived.

Wait wait wait wait fucking wait.
The costume comes with a "green card".
If an immigrant has a green card, they're legal able to live permanently in the United States.
Thus, he's not an "illegal alien".
I want that costume to stop being sold. Not because it's offensive, but because it's fucking wrong.

So write 'expired' on the green card. *THEN* you're an illegal alien.

And on the subject of immigration reform, I'm third generation in this country. If my grandparents could wait a couple years is post-war Soviet occupied East Germany for their paperwork to get through, the average illegal can wait it out in Mexico. Hell, I'll bet even modern-day Cuba is a cake walk compared to dealing with Red Army occupation forces.

You want to be a citizen? Earn it.

I hate Tomasello as much as the next guy, but he's not upset over immigrants in general, just those that live here without going through the legal process. Something his parents were honest enough to do.

It's true that we have an open invitation for immigrants. But they need to do things the right way, otherwise they're a drain on the system.

If that's the case, then I want the employees to go through each and every costume and write EXPIRED on each and every green card. Until then, these costumes are total bullshit.

Cort, I have to say this is really the best thing I've ever read to come from your keyboard, and it brings a hopeful tear to my eye.

I agree with you, and Celvantes, and even Tomasello in certain respects on the issue of immigration.

1.) Yes, it comes at a cost.
2.) Yes, you should do it legal. Nobody likes a squatter.
3.) No, our ancestors didn't exactly ask nicely when they first came over and started settling in the "world they discovered". (Trail of Tears, anyone?)

I'm no chauvinistic 'patriot', unlike yourself. Nice ad hominem attack though bro. (Yes, I just did the same thing.)

P.S. I'm pretty sure they just showed up, en masse, on boats.

The problem is, it takes so goddamned long to immigrate.

How long did it take on Ellis Island to emigrate Vs. how long does it take now? Red tape is a bitch.

Discoverers tend to be dicks toward native populations, my ancestors can definitely attest to that fact.

The "Legal Process" takes alot longer than some of you really know. Sorry but when you have kids who's futures depend on whether your living in a poor latin american company, (I mention Latin Amer. Because this is the only one i know of) you do whatever it takes to set them up for success.

Where I'm from, in Peru you can only work as long as your young and useful. Sure, lots of people go to college, but theres no jobs to be had, you go to college and become a psychologist and you end up working at a beer factory, such was the case with my dad.

I'm sorry but if i had a young kid and i knew that there was NO future in the current country i was in, and i could take a gamble by moving to the U.S illegaly to give them atleast a shot at becomming something and living a better life than i did, im going to take it. Sure, im going to try legally at first and do things the supposed "Right way", but it doesnt always work out like that, they dont get to everyone deserving, and theres many that arent deserving that receive the chance to come here. If the "Right Way" doesnt work, then I'll go whichever i can and see if i can obtain my residence while im there illegaly.

Me personally, I got lucky and came through Political Asylum (Im assuming this is the correct translation from the spanish version). However, I do have friends and family who have come illegaly, and have become legal while being here. People will always say "Just do it the right way and wait", until it deals with their future, and their family.

Immigrating anywhere is a pain in the ass, and a country only wants you if you have something to bring to the table, which most illegal immigrants don't have. Sure they can do hard labor, because for some reason, citizens of America don't want to do those type of jobs but cry that 'they took our jobs' or that there are no jobs.

I am sure there are seasonal worker visa for immigrants to come over and work the farms, but MOST working visas for any country need some sort of business to petition for you, and they have to prove that NO one else in America can do the job, or there isn't the volume needed to full those positions (for example, many Canadians in nursing get offers to the US every year). There are several different types of visas, but they are pretty specific, and likely people coming from poor countries have none of the education or skills to fullfill them.

The only other way you can immigrate is through family, and even that is a touchy subject. You can bring over an immediate family member, a spouse or a fiance. Of course, you have to jump through hoops to start that process, and it involves a lot of money and time. Funny enough, you can get approved for a visa but then be denied by a Immigration Officer at the Port of Entry. This usually doesn't happen, but I think its rediculous that someone would pay a ton of money and go through a legal process, FBI checks, medicals checks, etc and then get denied at the time of crossing. Silly.

These sort of processes take a year, and its pretty much a slap in the face of those who attempt to go to any country as a legal alien, who wishes to gain citizenship or lawful permanent residency, when someone jumps over a fence and recieves citizenship/protection from the government without having to fill out the paperwork, wait in line, be medically examined, be immunized based on a panel's decision, pay the fees, have background checks and be interviewed.

Oh and Xali, maybe it's supposed to be a fake green card, since apparently so many of them get printed to keep illegals from being discovered. Or at least, I assume so, because someone here once said that there's a blackmarket of driver licenses and Social Security Numbers over there for illegals.

Well what kind of dumbass illegal would be displaying a fake green card in the first place? God damn, I know it's supposed to be a joke but it's making my mind's gears creak with rage.

Honestly, I stopped reading after you trotted out this line of bull shit. I am so sick and tired of hearing morons go on and on about how illegals are "just doing jobs Americans won't do." Bull. Shit. I more American than the damn president, and I put myself through college doing work "Americans won't do."

The reason Americans aren't doing some of these jobs is that we have this strange urge to get paid for our work, and not take whatever will be given under the table.

I might amend what Zephayra said instead, and say "Citizens of America don't want to do those types of jobs for less than it's worth, or for free."

Scale of pay? Why work a shit job that pays minimum wage, when with little to no additional effort, you can try to find something that offers a little more?

I'd say it's more that people don't want to be exploited greatly for the gain of a few who do next to nothing in comparison.

Yes comrade, it is time the proletariat rose up, and overthrew the bourgeoisie! Running a business is easy!

That's not what I was talking about though.

I was talking about people content to live off welfare and not get a job, we live in a period of "entitlement" and it's harmful to our overall well-being.

Xali, I was going based on this comment from the Health Care Discussion.

The selling of fraudlent SSNs and birth certificates, as well as state driver's licenses, is a HUGE black market in the U.S. It's not that hard for illegal immigrants to get the documents they need to appear to be legal. It's all about knowing who to contact and if you have the money to pay for the services.

Someone is a little angry today. I like how you pinpoint me as a 'moron' like everyone even though I'm just basing my comment (which I suppose came off wrong) on what an American said when I questioned why the government really has no plan to crack down on illegal immigrants. To me, the problem is that businesses are not punished for hiring illegal immigrants, or those that provide them with illegal documents to make them appear legal.

Also, with regards to the crackdown on fraudulent documentation for illegal immigrants, it's simply a numbers game. No one wants to commit the time and resources needed to truly crackdown on such a black market. Look at the billions of dollars the U.S. puts into the "war on drugs" and look at how futile that effort is in reality. Plus, another thing to consider is that most elected officials in the U.S. only want to appear to be tough on illegal immigration to please their constituents, when in reality they know that the U.S. economy depends on those illegal immigrants to fill menial and labor-intensive jobs which service and support larger and more vital industries (i.e. construction, food service, manufacturing, et al).

If the US economy is dependent on illegal immigrants filling menial and labor intensive jobs, it just appears to me that American citizens aren't doing them. If these jobs are so important to the economy, then why is the government cracking down on companies and businesses that hire them, and make a fair wage? I'm sorry but in today's economy where jobs are saturated with too many college grads and baby boomers refusing to let go of their jobs, it seems like a lot of people have to take what they can get.

I'm also a foreigner to the US, and I look at the country from a different view. We're told over here that the illegal immigrants are taking jobs away because they're willing to work cheaper (and no one gets punished for this)but the government won't do anything about it because the economy is dependent on it.. so really, how am I suppose to look at this issue when it is presented as such?

Nobody wants to do a shitty job, but shitty jobs need to be done. We have way too many people thinking they're entitled to a great job, when really, we aren't. You can bust your ass for a degree and/or diploma, and you can end up selling shoes for the rest of your life because the market doesn't need another [insert fancy job title here].

You hear that? It's the sound of the joke going over my head >:

Having been an illegal immigrant myself, yes I also went thru the legal process to become a legal resident, then a citizen. Wanna know how long it took me? 11 years! I was 4 when I came to this country as an illegal immigrant, and thanks to some relatives, we were able to secure a quick interview to start the legal process. After submitting all the forms and such (which took about a year) it took the US government 9 years to send me a date for my interview (and my mothers since she was also illegal).

We received the letter a year, A WHOLE FUCKING YEAR before we were due in to present our case. When the day finally came for me, the bitch that was handling all the paper work was condescending, rude, obnoxious, and overall a flat out bitch. My dad was already a resident, and was making decent money to support us, yet the bitch, in closing, decides to tell my dad "And sir, please make sure that you are able to support your family here in the United States, we don't take kindly to people who take advantage of welfare." WTF?

It is a HUGE hassle to go thru the whole process legally, and even then, it's not guaranteed that you will be given residency/citizenship! That is the reason why many people stay here as illegals. Is it right? No, its not, does the system need a huge overhaul? Hell to the muthafuckin yes.
