I just recently got my 360..like 3 days ago. I'm itching to get an rpg for it but I don't know what to get. I thought about Last Remnant but most people I talk to about it say its horrible. So, I've looked at Infinite Undiscovery and Tales of Vesperia as my top 2. Any opinions on them would be appreciated.

If you want a good RPG for 360, I highly recommend Lost Odyssey. I have over 60hrs of gameplay.

The story is excellent, the cutscenes are breath taking, and the game play has a lot of traditional RPG elements to it. I believe one of the designers/producers or whatever, is actually from the original FF Square-Soft team back in the day too.

(Edit - I realize I skimmed your last question there... haven't played either of the two games though I have heard good things about ToV from friends that have played it)

Tales of Vesperia is easily the best RPG I've played this gen. If you have friends who love RPG's, they can even join in if they want to. It has a dog peeing around the world sidequest, how can you beat that?

My roommate rented infinite undiscovery when it first came out, and took it back early. According to him, the tutorial levels were horrible, the battle system sucked and the game was very, very boring.

Last Remnant is much, much better than Infinite Undiscovered (IU) and IU is a terrible, terrible game. Last Remnant is FFXII, with a better story, but worse battle system. The game would be totally ace if you had control over your players instead of just bein' able to -suggest- what they -should- do at !Random!. It's also technically flawed but that isn't as bad as the horrible combat gameplay and can be gotten used to.

Go with Lost Odyssey before Tales of Vesperia. Both are good but one is vastly better than the other.

ToV and LO are pretty much equal to me, but ToV has way more play value. I owned Last Remnant and put 5 hours into it before I gave up. I couldn't stand the main character, and after the 4th time of waiting over 2 minutes for a battle screen to pop up, I said screw it.

IU believe it or not gets much better after the first 2 hours, not saying it's great but playable

1. Mass Effect
2a. ToV
2b. LO
3. IU
4. Last Remnant (engine is absolutely horrible imo)

I believe Star Ocean: The last Hope comes out this month as well.

4. Last Remnant (engine is absolutely horrible imo)

LO actually uses the exact same engine.
It's SE that did not utilize it right, the engine itself is not to blame.
It does make you feel like SE put too much haste on the game for the sake of releasing it on time.
As far as LR goes, it's a pretty decent game if you can live with the buggy way SE implemented the U3 engine for this game.
I personally really like the way they implemented the battle system for example and the story isn't too bad either.
(Although I personally have to admit, I am bothered by the crappy quality SE delivered with this game as well.)

I still have to get ToV but I am trying to save some money point for my upcoming vacations to Japan so I won't be buying a lot of games.
Sorry no opinion on that one.

You must be a champ, to say the least. I really don't like video games, though be them rare, where you don't really have control over IMPORTANT actions. LR is like poker without skill, it's a pure game of luck and coincidence. Not sayin' it doesn't take skill to play LR, it definitely does, especially since you need to plan ahead 2-3 moves in case you don't get the option to defend/heal when you actually need it. I can't count the number of times I'd get the defense and heal options right off the bat and only get attack options when I needed to defend/heal later on in the battle. They really borked would could have been a fantastic game. Had they given players control over these important decisions I'd say they had just one upped the battle system of FFXII. I could have easily forgiven their inability to utilize the U3 engine if it wasn't for this huge, imo, flaw.

On another topic, don't really consider Mass Effect an RPG (in the sense you're lookin for). It's more of a shooter, which you've probably already noticed. However, especially at it's new price, you would be hard pressed to find a better game. The greatest hits version also has the DLC included. Really a fantastic game. It is one of the few games this gen that have warranted more than a single play through with me, back to back. Though, I didn't like the game at first, as a matter of fact I didn't hold back my hatred for the game when it first came out, but after goin' back to it a few months ago, I formed a very new opinion of it.

Tales of Vesperia does have more to keep you busy than LO, but LO is just classic in that Final Fantay feel. It's also only $24 at this point. I also really, really enjoyed Blue Dragon, despite it bein' based off a kiddo cartoon show. The story isn't all most of us older people would like, but the gameplay more than makes up for it. You should also consider it as it is only $20. Another $20 title is Eternal Sonata. I didn't really enjoy it to much but it had its moments. If you get ToV and really like it, I'd buy ES. It's pretty much the same game, in style, just with much, much less to do.

Lost odyssey is amazing and so is mass effect. Can't forget Oblivion.

I'll chime in and also recommend Lost Odyssey and Oblivion. They're very good. You can also get Mass Effect pretty cheap these days, I imagine. Possibly Fallout 3.

Lost Odyssey was incredible
Tales of Vesperia was incredible
Fallout 3 was incredible (hybred shooter RPG.
Mass Effect was incredible (its a hybred shooter RPG so you know)
Fable 2 is good, but short.. It has replayability i guess tho.
Last Remnant is not so bad, just many glitches to get over
Infinite Undiscovery is one of the worste RPGs i have ever played..

Oblivion should not be forgotten also.. This is still the best game this gen so far for me.. At least i have yet to be shocked by a game like i was with this. Maybe the market was just so bad then?

Fallout 3 for something new and if you don't mind it being a shooting RPG. ToV for traditional JRPG. Better than LO IMO. Mass Effect sucks. Dunno Square RPGs. Don't forget Eternal Sonata.

Yeah I knew the engine was U3 which is good only if utilized right, byt most developers can't figure out.

I consider Mass Effect an RPG, it's just not a JRPG. I mean it has everything an RPG has. You can pause the fights to enter commands, level up skill system, role playing, exploration, etc.. Not sure how people think it's terrible though. I can understand some people thinking it isn't there cup o tea...but horrible? Strange.

Well the combat is boring, plot pointless and voice acting stinks hard. On top of that, it's poorly programmed. It's a great concept that became a great game, FALLOUT 3. Mass Effect needed another year dev time to live up to its promise. Maybe ME2 will be good. I think the people who like ME1 so much loved the concept so much they couldn't see the flaws. Wish I was among them.

If you're looking for a 'classic' feel RPG with more modern graphics look into Blue Dragon. For the more modern RPG's I suggest Oblivion, Fallout3, Fable II, Eternal Sonata looked like it might be good but I only got to play the demo.

my top 3.

1. Tales of Vesperia
2. Eternal Sonate
3. Lost Odyssey

Eternal Sonata is the only RPG ive played in years that actually made me go back for a second run through, i may be doing that with LO and ToV soon.

I'm gonna throw Bioshock in the mix~ Yes it's a FPS but can't a FPS also be a RPG? There's plot elements, there are upgrades to health, magic, + abilities. Lots of unlockables, hell that's just about everything in a RPG minus the turn-based + sidequests in a normal rpg.

It's beautiful, it's got tons of gameplay (easily 20+ hours if you do both good/bad storylines), get this game you won't be disappointed (unless you hate FPS's, in which case, don't get it!)

You really shouldn't use such broad mechanics to define an RPG, or you're going to end up being able to call anything an RPG. Yes, Bioshock has health upgrades, but that's to offset the fact that theres also no armor. Besides that, what you're listing are Adventure game aspects. Zelda, Metroid, etc.. "Magic" is just another type of weapon, regardless of genre.

RPGs are by definition using behind the scenes dice rolls that may or may not be influenced by character statistics in some way. That's the one and only thing that defines an RPG(After all, every RPG is birthed from D&D,) anything else is adding on subgenre. Yes, there are FPS RPGs, but Bioshock isn't one of them. Team Fortress 2 is more qualified to be called an FPS RPG, due to damage ranges and random critical hits.

On topic, Star Ocean is coming out soon.
