Do you ever have a conversation with someone and then come away feeling suprised they lived past age 12?

I work at a hotel off of I-40 @ exit 373. Easy enough to find.

I got a call a minute ago that went like this:

me:This is James, can I help you?
woman: I'm headed west on I-75, are you at that exit?
me: 75 goes North and South.
Woman: ok, but are you at exit 75?
me: I'm at exit 373.
Woman: What state is that in?
me: Tennessee...
Woman: So you are at 373 off of I-75?
me: I'm at 373 off of I-40. 373 on I-75 isn't in Tennessee.
Woman: ok, so if I'm going east on I-75...
me: (interuppting) I-75 doesn't go east. (She said west earlier!)
Woman: I'm sorry, I have the wrong number.

So... What do ya think?
Drugs? Mental illness? Ignorance? Learning disorder?

I'm sure other people have jobs dealing with the public... Is this a common issue? Do other people have customers with an IQ only expressable in fractions?

No, no. I think it's safe to say anything remotely Customer Service oriented is going to result in the regular and unbelievable stream of idiot-kind. Case in point: I used to work in the customer service hub of a major int'l shipping company. One word for you: Wow. They come in all flavors.

women should not be allowed to drive, and if they are they should know where they are going, and if they don't shouldn't be given a cell phone, and if they are they shouldn't be allowed to ask for directions.

What I'm saying is back to the kitchen with you all!!!

i'm reminded of a girl i went to highschool with...trippy should be able to understand how "....wtf?" this one is since he's from around this area. me her and some other friends were going to the movies in Oak Ridge, and we're driving seperately. I give her directions, she lives in south clinton (a few miles form my house). Keep in mind clinton is a relatively small town consisting of 2 bridges and 9 red lights. One of the bridges is big and green and is thusly refered to as, you guessed it, "the green bridge" the only major intercetion in clinton is just north of said bridge, anyway back to the story. i say "Leave your house, get on charles sievers blvd and head towards the high school. Once you get to the red light past the green bridge turn left and follow 61 west until you hit oak ridge. It's about a 15 minute drive. I'll meet you there." fairly simple right? go straight, turn left, go straight until you see the big fuckin "Oak Ridge" sign. Now the fun part...

are you ready?

keep in mind this has scared fully grown adults...

SHE ENDS UP IN FUCKING KENTUCKY
TWO HOURS in the completely OPPOSITE direction. this means she made 1 fatal error...she turned right at the red light instead of left...3 steps, was too much for her to handle...not only did she end up in kentucky...she was gone for THREE (yes, 1+1+1=3) DAYS. her parents reported her to the police as missing, it was on the news and all...

Yeah about once a week... There are times when I wonder how this entire state survived past 12.

derail, but the people that annoy me the most are ones that will just..never...talk...

even if you ask them a question they just...don't...respond...ever..

especially in mmo's, you invite them, they do what they're supposed to (to a degree) but if you ask them to do somthing, they just continue on doing what they usually do, never respond, never talk, nothing, ever. after a while you're done (wipe, win, whatever else), and they just..leave. don't say bye, just leaves.

Sir, I feel your pain...I work at a car rental company near the Baltimore/Washington International Airport. Now albeit I work in the body damage section most of the time working with the cars that the customers screw up; but occasionally I will have to help out answering the phones and dealing with the wonderful *read: grates on my nerves* people that call in. At least you caller could speak english...not to say that I don't have a problem with people who don't, but it gets very frustrating trying to explain to someone why their bill is as much as it was, or how to get to the location from the airport when they dont really understanding anything that I am saying to them and vice versa. I have plenty of stories I could tell you about lost and found items, billing issues, hell even people that come in to apply for jobs....its never ending

The sad thing is I am more directional savy in real life than game. My roommate on the other hand is the opposite. Try telling him he's going the wrong way for ten minutes and then he realizes it. XD

When all else fails, try to remember if there are any noticible buildings and stuff (fast food or wal-mart seems to work). And if the person is face to face, make the best attempt to draw a map.

Sounds like a misprint of a phone number or something. Does not help when states decide to also change their exit numbers twice in a year (lol florida a few years ago). Not to mention there are subsidary interstate numbers (I-275).

Customers are not always 100% knowlegable about the product or service an employee is selling or providing. It may seem frustrating to deal with them when they do not seem to understand at all. Although the same can be said about employees who do not know about the product or service themselves.

OT: Has anyone ever had someone stop you to ask for directions? I dunno but it happens to me a lot, even when visiting other places.

After reading these experiences, it just reminds me more and more of what I've come to experience at my work place. And I'm quite sure that a simple phrase is all that is necessary to sum everything up:
The typical American is stupid and ignorant.
Keep in mind that I said "typical", so not everyone is included (though I'd say at least 85% of the populus is included, personally). I will add that most typical Americans are also rude, for the most part.
Yes, I'll admit that I can be a bit arrogant at times. Reason being is having to deal with the idiots at my workplace and therefore becoming frustrated beyond belief. >.< I'm sure you've all had such experiences.
So far, I'd say a fair portion of QCDN'ers don't fit my statement (at least 90%), but there are a few, rare exceptions...

The best place to find the worst people is a video rental store. I used to work at a hollywood Video, and this usually happened once a night:

Our hero: You have a late fee for (insert movie), you wanna take care of that tonight?
Customer: No. No I don't have a late fee. You're wrong. I returned it on time.
Our Hero: You returned it tonight...
Customer: Yeah, when i got here.
Our Hero: Yeah... It was due last week.
::pause::
Customer: That's when I returned it. Last week.
Our Hero: You just handed it to me ten minutes ago. It's right there on the counter.
::long pause::
Customer: You're wrong. I'm going to Blockbuster.

The sad part is that we (blockbuster and hollywood video) would just trade retarted customers back and forth.

Fixed for you.

I wonder about people passing 12 every time I sign in here and read some of the people who post's comments.

I feel your pain everyday I am at work Trippy. I run a website. I swear everyday I get someone new with the exact same fricking problem.

Me> how can I help you?
Customer> I am on your website. I need S bags but I can't find them.
Me> Are you on the bags page(yeah I really do have to ask this)
Customer> yes but there are no S bags
Me> S bags are at the bottom of the page
Customer> No they aren't
Me> yes they are scroll down the page you will see them
Customer> How do I scroll down the page
Me> (trying my hardest not to scream at this moron) you see the little bar on the side of your page use that
Customer> I will call you back

You know this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't an every day occurance

Trippy, it sounds like if she was on I-40 going West, it coulda been that 6 mile stretch in Knoxville where I-40 and I-75 are the same 6 lane highway.

Why can't Helen Keller drive?

She's Deaf, so she can't hear me cussing her out, honking my horn.
And she's blind, so she can't see the bird as I'm flooring it past her ^-^;

The correct answer was, because shes a woman. Close though.

It's proven that men are worse drivers than women.. they even have higher insurance rates, ya know?

If a young white man dies, it's probably in a car wreck. If a young black man dies it's probably because another young black man killed him. If a woman dies, it was probably cancer.

See we are better drivers :P
