I think you guys underestimate just how many people are working on this. Take IGE, which is the largest game items and currency "creator" on the net since they bought Yantis. IGE's got an army of Chinese farming any imaginable game currency 24/7, on an earlier version of their web site they stated that they got 130 people working in their Hong Kong office, thus it is no surprise that some toons are online 24/7.
The reason I wrote "creator" is because IGE doesn't always play by the rules, most notably was the case in which a few hundred EQ trial accounts were deleted by SOE because they found out that IGE used those accounts to accumulate billions of plat during the banker dupe incident.
Bottom line is, sellling virtual things, be it currency, property (UO, Second Life), or items, is
BIG business, and it is on the rise as more and more "average" gamers enter the market. Gamers who either don't have the time, desire, or in some cases skill, to achieve things in the virtual world, but have the means in the real world to pay for it.
Reminds me of what must have been 2002, I was doing well in EQ and sold some items and plat to a guy who turned out to be the VP or McGraw-Hill publishing at the time. Some $200 for a Cobalt BP, and $100 per 10,000 plat were commonplace.
I guess the difference is that I wasn't playing the game with the purpose to farm and sell stuff, nor was I playing 24/7, I just so happened to have excess, and between helping friends of mine out with plat when they needed it and selling some of it I did ok. Later on I sold most all my characters for what I consider big bucks, but again, they were not created for the purpose to sell them off, I just retired and obviously there is no point to let something go to waste if someone else is perfectly willing to pay some serious cash for it.
P.S.: Anyone interested in a pretty nice EQ account? haha ...
