Is this site slow for a reason?

I've kept noticing how incredibly long it takes to get into and out of the various forums or just to switch pages within a thread. Looking when I logged on, I note the last copyright date is 2001 or 2002. Has it been that long since any serious work has been done on this site? And is that the reason it's so frustratingly slow?

Finally, as a newcomer to the site, what can be done to speed it up or to get somebody to speed it up?

It's fine most of the time, it's just slow in the early mornings. I remember Pupusa (the main admin) saying something about it, but haven't heard anything new lately.

Everytime we mention it, Pupusa says it is fixed even though the problem persists. From 2 am - noon the forum is practically inaccessible. Really strange behavior for such a low traffic time.

Yup, this thread has popped up before.. I get timeouts alot on this forum and slow load pages. That should not be happening on a simple messageboards especially since i have 2mb broadband line. :/

From what I understand, the site is not copyrighted - the bulletin board system is. Pupusa didn't write any of this, it's the original code that hasn't been changed since 2002 or whenever. Hell, the game wasn't even released in NA until 2003 I think, and I doubt there was enough demand for something like this before us engrish rosers started praying.

actually there have been updates to phpBB. the latest version(2.0.17) was released on 19th July 2005. but it does not contain any new features that would reduce the work load on the server.

when the site is slow its most likely not due to the BBS, but probably due to stress on the webserver.

here i thought it was my crappy work computer

It happens fo me from early moring to almost 3pm EST sometimes. I was wondering why this happens too, but I usually do something else on the internet while waiting for this site to load(or I play FFXI if I am at home).

I suspect it is the provider hosting the forums. Given how small this forum is (in bandwidth and cpu usage), it likely shares a server with many other programs. It could be the other services are doing cpu and bandwidth intensive applications in the morning hours (such as database maintence and access). Only solution is to likely find a different provider.

shit all i have to say is its is still a lot better than anything on the Allakhazam site. I never noticed it being that bad at night and the times that you are talking about are the times i am on this site the most. Anyways its a free service so you cant complain unless you donate IMO.

At times alla is faster than this fourm. This fourm is slow in the mornings/afternoons for me too. Maybe it would help if admin would purge some of the old post / unused accounts. It might not speed up things all that much, but it wouldnt hurt. (sorta like defraging HD for some minor speed).

I doubt that'd help much. Web servers are built to dish out ridiculous amounts of data repeatedly, and this site requires damn near zero bandwidth (in comparison to others) since it's all text-based. None of these graphics are hosted off qcdn's server so it's all just text and the odd chunk of pr0n.

In the past performance issues have creeped up every now and then. This board, as well as bunch of other sites I run are hosted at Hurricane Electric (www.he.net). HE is usually very careful about not oversubscribing their servers. Personally I believe that serverload is likely not the cause of the performance issues we are seeing.

My theory is that QCDN is at a stage where some mysql query optimizations would be in order (as outlines on the official phpbb boards by users who run larger message boards), as well as verifiying that none of the installed mods is reponsible for slow queries.

So yeah, I do believe the performance is related to the time it takes to receive a query result. What I don't know is why it sometimes works just fine, and sometimes it is slow (which would suggest a server load issue). Perhaps it has to do with the number of active users (just guessing).

I am currently trying to contract Pupusa to see whether he would want to return the board admin to me (please realize that he is not obligated to do so). If that were to happen, then I would likely change the board software to vBulletin, which does seem to handle larger boards better right out of the box without the need to mess with the code.

I have also initiated a help ticket with HE, though it's doubtful that will turn up anything useful because it's tough for them to trouble shoot an intermittent problem unless they are looking at it right when the issue is occuring.

Man, long-time-no-see Scully <.<;
