Yeah, it's just a game. So are football, baseball, basketball, hockey, jai alai, soccer, polo, tennis, pingpong, and dodgeball. In some of the more entertainment-deprived parts of the world, so is curling.
They're all games.
In each "game" (or sport) there are rules. Breaking those rules carries a penalty. Why? Because breaking them is either A) providing an unfair advantage, B) harmful to another player, or C) unsportsmanlike in some other way.
Now let's talk about option C for a sec.
Good sportsmanship is something that's prolly not hyped up as much as it once was, but I'm still a big believer in it. It builds character. It teaches that getting there isn't nearly as important as how you get there. Not only is unsportsmanlike conduct likely to land you in the hotseat with gaming officials, it's apt to earn you some well-deserved ostracism from other players, spectators as well.
This game has rules too. You agree to them each and every time you log on. If you never bothered to read them, that's just your own ignorance - not an excuse. Disobeying them to gain an upper hand says a lot about your character, or rather your lack thereof.
If you can't see that, you're either in denial or just a flat-out dumbass. I'd lean in the direction of it being a bit of both.
What else is just a game to you? School? Work? (dare I say it) Life? After all, that's all in the perception, right? If school's just a game to see who can get the best grades, or even just a game to see who can squeak by with the least effort, would you cheat there too? If work's just a game to see who can make the most money and all's fair, I'm sure there's some former Enron execs that could give you a few tips. If life's just a game to see how much you can personally enjoy yourself, go ahead and cheat there too - every chance you get. Psychology has a name for people in that last category; they call them "sociopaths." Me, I just call it evil.
So to all of you out there who wanna cheat(hack) or knowingly associate with those who do while hiding behind the "It's Just a Game" defense:
You can kiss my old-fashioned, morally absolute ass.
P.S. This is coming from someone who's never cheated on anything. Ever.
