I've got a goal...Lanien, Eleibfrid, look out!

**WARNING: VERY LONG** ><

Mal,
Since I only have a level 8 DRG, the best advice I can give you that is DRG specific is to use a spear, and hit stuff with the pointy end directed towards the monster. That about covers it. Ok you got me... I'm not really sure about that much even.

What I will say though is something that is more common sense than revolutionary, and it applies to all jobs that don't currently enjoy a lot of popularity or even widespread acceptance as well as the ones that do. Ok here it goes:

Don't try to be the best DRG you can be.

No I don't mean get another job, I mean don't shoehorn yourself into focusing on being a better DRG than the best ones you know. The main thing I would recommend to you is to focus your energies on being the best PLAYER you can be. There are several reasons for this. People are going to have their preconcieved notions about DRG. There are plenty of equipment guides and macro and sub and everything guides out there. If you can pay for the best stuff you can have the same or even better numbers than good players. That's not what makes a good player though, and that's not what makes a good DRG.

You will NOT be able to convince the whole server that DRG is awesome. Ele for example is widely respected and viewed as a great player, and he is a DRG (grats on 75 btw!). Even so, you've already seen the barrage of negativity that comes up when people talk about DRG. I know you weren't here before Zentatsu was gone, but he was a VERY good player, and a very good DRG. All the disrespect towards his job constantly got him down though. It was said of him that he was proof that DRGs didn't have to suck, but that didn't make him feel any better. The negative view towards DRG was one of the factors that made him quit the game, and Vana'diel lost a great man when he did.

Enough of what not to do, let's focus on the constructive end. There are people in this game who are known to be great, knowledgeable and VALUABLE players to have in your party, no matter what job they are currently playing. Abilities and levels don't transfer from job to job, but knowledge, experience, and skill do. This is the type of player that you will want to strive to be in order to achieve your goal. You need to know as much as you can about everything and be able to present it in a way that comes across as helpful and competent, not superior, bragging or lecturing.

How do you do this? You will want to know all about the possible skill chains and weapon types in a group, and the weaknesses of the mobs they can exploit. You will want to know how to put together a successful party, not just grab a bunch of RNG and a NIN and go at it, but build a well balanced group whose abilities mesh and make a whole greater than the sum of the parts. You will want to know the hazards and benefits of not only the common but also the less common XP areas, and know how to make the best of both. Something like an emergency situation tends to stick in a person's mind, and if you can handle yourself exceptionally well in one, you tend to get remembered yourself. Always be prepared to get to a camp site and handle whatever may be there.

I can guarantee that you will be in groups with "rival" DDs like DRKs or SAM, and the best thing you can do is to not make it into a pissing contest. Figure out ways that you can get kills faster by working with them instead of against them. If people find themselves in good parties consistently with you and you are one of the few constants, they will eventually start to realize that you are the life of the party, so to speak.

A lot of times you will find yourself building your own PT as a DRG, and as leader you may have to think for your members on occasion. If you're camping in a remote location for example, you may want to grab a stack or two of cheap arrows or bolts, in case the party goes long (which is good) and the puller runs out of ammo (which is bad). Maybe a few juices or cookies or cheap DD food, anything to shore up the weak spots or the unprepared. It's easier for one person to mess up a great party than it is for one to create one, but you can at least try to minimise the damage. You'll make a lot of friends that way, bringing backup supplies to give or sell for cheap to fellow PT members.

That's how you get remembered well. Being remembered well often leads to being sought after, and being sought after and constantly performing above ever-elevating expectations is the surest way I know of to be considered "great". Maybe even the best.

One more thing; The people who are deemed to be paradigms of a particular job, such as Eleibfrid or Ellion and numerous others, should be seen as guideposts or treasure maps of insight (sorry about the cheesy metaphor), and not obstacles along your path. I know if I wanted to be the best I could be at something, I'd want to glean the knowledge of people who had it figured out rather than drawing a line in the sand and declaring them on the losing side. There's confidence and there's conceit, and text is not the best medium to tell the difference.

I probably left plenty out, but I think you get my point. I offer you no equipment advice or even specifics for the most part, but I hope this will at least give you a direction in which to set sail. Take it for what it's worth. If I knew all the answers there would be a whole lot less people thinking, "WTF! Who is this guy and why is he posting here?" as they trudge through volume 475637 of Encylopedia BS.

Good luck on your quest Mal, and when you get to the 40s I'd be happy to teach you how to be frustrated at being unable to pull hate off the tank! :D MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

**Disclaimer: This man is full of crap. Please disregard anything that comes out of his mouth. Not responsible for accidents. **

Very good post man I'm going to print this one out. This should be stickied to the top of the forums for EVERYONE to read.

Also, your avatar FTW...very cool.

Well, as for my two gil, DRG can be awesome. They have sick SC's from 3-49, then they get Penta Thrust which is a LOT of damage, but sucks to SC with. Then Skewer at 60, and Wheeling Thrust at 65 which makes Light.

As far as gear and food go. Well there is this wonderful thing that DRGs naturally get...Accuracy bonus trait. Opposed to DRKs, SAMs, and THFs, from this trait I would think the best way to go is Meat foods, Snipers, and SH would be more then enough Acc for DRG. Then with meat foods you could pump out 100+ damage per swing and have your wyvern pumping out 40-50 damage.

As for all the Asshats that are like omfg DRG suckorz... You guys are just a bunch of DRKs, MNKs, THFs, SAMs with a huge e-penis.

imma thf, and i dont mind pting with drg's  in fact, i rele dont see why people think drgs suck, i rele dont. unless someone decided one day that all DRGs suck and everyone just kinda followed him <_<

i think the only thing that makes a job rele suck are: 1) of course, bad equipment. i mean a few level out of date is ok, or if u cant afford something rediculously high (like scorps <_<) then of course thats nothing to blame. but when i see a DD elvaan with STR rings, or dex down stuff, it tends to give me a bad impression on their knowledge of their job/race ><;
and 2) a bad attitude. i dont know HOW many times ive been in a pt where if it takes longer than 30 minutes to get going they just make up an excuse and leave. Generally if your a nice person who can listen to some advice or ask about something that they dont know, people will atleast see that you're trying. nothing is worse than a person who doesnt listen or voice their opinions. thats just my point of view tho, and what i notice while im in pt's and such ^^

. . . Wow. Derbs (Commanderbs) This is why I come to you for advice. ; ; Thank you. You've inspired me to be the best -player- I can be. I will strive for what you've described. Thank you again. See you in the CP (^_^)b

My only advice, and I'm not a dragoon, is to make the most of your LFP time. I walk through Lower Jeuno, and I see miscellaneous melees LFP at the guide stone. They could be making gil and improving thier equipment. Melees will always have lengthy LFP times, simply because they're a popular role that people want to play in a party. Don't be one of the many players complaining how they can't afford X item, whilst spending hours on end wasting time LFP at the Lower Jeuno guide stone. A good leader knows that good players can be LFP outside of Jeuno. In fact, I would prefer to invite the player who's currently taking active measures to be a more effective character, than the player who's wasting potential eating potato chips AFK, and who probably won't even respond to a /tell in time. If you spend all your time that you aren't exp'ing making gil, you probably won't need to turn down parties later for dedicated farming. I still use Sarutabaruta crawlers and Spiny Spippi as my primary gil source, and though it's mediocre at best, the gil adds up. I can't think of many times as a Blm that I've had to turn down EXP because I needed gil.

Little do DRKs know is that at the end of the game, hell, even in the middle of the game, they unknowingly become Second Rate DDs as they are easily surpassed by...

Yep. Monks.

Dragoon is a fun job. If you are able to get a scorp harness and snipers and/or grace rings try the sam subjob out and use meat as food. I used to party with another DRG that used sam SJ when we were both at lvl 66 and i was a drg/war using sushi and we were practically even but if there was someone who had an advantage it would have been the other drg. When i played, there were plenty of DRGs that didn't have scorp harnesses when they were at lvl 66. So, if you do get one... do try SAM sj out because you'll get a tiny bit more TP for your gil and you'll hit on just about as good as a drg/war with berserk if you are a sam with a scorp harness you don't really need food.

Also.. there is one thing that has been bothering me even though i should keep the past buried. for sniper rings.... why get them when you can get grace rings? If you think of it by level.. snipers are about 20+ levels under grace/flourite rings correct? Do you really think a ring like that would be used for so long? I know dex and acc are related in some way. I've heard many things about the whole 2 dex = 1 acc theory. But have you ever thought of 1 dex = 2 acc? Because I'm pretty sure dex isn't meant just for thfs to have for sa/ta... and when you see thfs attack in parties.. they don't miss too much... it's just that they hit for weak amounts of damage with all that dex they have... and they probably don't focus on acc too much... just dex.... But enough of that....

Good luck on your quest to 75 and to being the best that you can be. Tell us how it goes.

ok, my apologies then... i never even seen that post but now would you think that there's a point where you could be carrying too much +acc? Based on those tests there is a 'random' factor that determines whether you hit a mob or not. There's some formula that involves that acc and dex and the evasion of the mob you fight. But where do you draw the line in equipping +acc gear?

There's probably not going to be much difference from someone who has 25 acc and someone who has 27 acc. Or someone who wears 23 acc and 20 acc. When can you stop worrying about acc and focus on something like str or atk or whatever trait so you won't have to hit as much but hit for stronger than usual.

This isn't the flameboard so i won't comment on WSM.

Just an addition. As a THF, i have 2 sets of gear. 1 with DEX>AGI>STR>ATK for sata. This is what thieves are known for as SATA is their defining trait. If you check a thief, you know he's a thief therefore pay attention to their dex gear mostly.

Good thieves(i believe I am i good THF at least) also carry along a second set of gear. here the main focus is ACC>DEX>(STR/ATK, even an elvaan thf can hit 0's on some of those tougher mobs, and depending on the situation either more STR, ATK or both is needed to void this occurrence.) Usually you won't pay attention to any piece really apart from a scorpion harness since it is a big ticket item.

Myself, when I know i'll be goofing around jeuno a while, i like to see a big DEX bonus in my status window, ill wear my SATA set, but with my harness for elvaan sexiness. I even find myself putting a greed scimitar for the extra cool look.

As for helping you out, i have no dragoon specific tips. I do however have a litle food suggestion. Carry more than 1 food. Heres an example: from around 58 on, i usually(when i dont forget like one of my pts recently, i was soo embarassed) carry out to an exp pt, enough for 3 hours and probably 4 to be safe of exp on each of: Meat Chiefkabob, Squid Sushi +1, and Yellow Curry, and recently added Sole Sushi(+1)(will fade out the squid i think, more useful stats). When i get to camp ill wander around camp and check a bunch of mobs, and i'm looking for low/reg/high evasion and/or defense. If I notice all mobs are high def and eva, i'll suggest that this may not be the best place for exp. They goal in my case is building tp 1st, having very damaging ws second, so once the mobs are mostly conning low evasion, i go ahead and add more atk with meat. Try and figure out your own menu for which mobs. But there is no best food for all occasions, mix and match and you will find something valuable that will benefit you.(Ambrosia is pretty good for any occasion but its annoying as hell to get)

I hope i was of help.

hey hey hey

hey ive known ele since i was a level 1 blm last year round this time and let me tell you this no one compares to the ele dragoon![/i]
