I recently saw two very superb Japanese films.

1) Deathnote

2) Moonchild

The Deathnote (The live action movie, not the manga), was aboslutely amazing and Moonchild was also a wonderful movie.
Then I went and watched the japanese Grudge/Ring against the english versions. The japanese versions were simply horrifying and wonderful to watch. The english versions.....failed in comparison.

Anyone else have any good JP movies they could direct me to?

Why are their damn movies always better than ours?

They aren't.
Why are they always cooler?

They aren't.
Why are asian people scarier than other people?!

If by scary you mean frightening, they aren't.
If by scary you mean fucking weird, it's genetic.

Sure, it's called "You're White/Hispanic/Black, Stop Idolizing the Japanese."

Didn't take much to derail this thread. I saw some JP horror movie called the eye which was pretty eerie. Worth checking out.

A Tale of Two Sisters - This movie scared the ever-loving-bejeesus out of me. D:

Ichi The Killer

I hated that movie. Just... ugh. My friend loved it, demanded I saw it. Wowzers.

I liked Suicide Club, or Suicide Circle, I forget the name. That was a pretty cool flick.

Story of Ricky is hilariously violent, meaning all the violence is so over-the-top you can't help but laugh. Example: Pulling a guy's small intestine out and strangling him with it. (That movies not Japanese, but Chinese I believe.)

i went to Tokyo earlier this year.
half the movies in their theaters where American.

The differences between the Grudge/Ring and Ju-On/Ringu are pretty great. They probably failed in comparison to you because the english versions do not pocess the same themes as the japanese versions. I will agree that Ju-On is the better movie, but lacks the special effects that worked well in the Grudge, but thats only due to the film's age.
However, out Ringu and The Ring, I think The Ring is better. Ringu is good but The Ring very subtle and doesn't try to explain everything.

Anyway, I liked Shinobi, like a live action Naruto without the filler.

Yeah, i thought "The Ring" was much more entertaining to watch, whereas "Ringu" was much more entertaining to say out-loud.

Akira Kurosawa go.

Battle Royale 1 and Spirited Away are nice (Spirited away is a bit mainstream...)

Battle Royale is definitely a good watch. Just for the mindlessness of it.
Also, anything by Akira Kurosawa. Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman.
Kinda surprised no one's mentioned Ping Pong.

Save The Green Planet is pretty good too. Kind of a mind-fuck but hilarious and cringe worthy at the same time.

I watched dark water in japanese yesterday was different only problem is I can't remember what the american Dark water was like.. lol

Yes battle royale 1 was a great movie...

It might be an anime movie but AKIRA is always a great japanese movie to watch

I really liked When the last sword was drawn, saw that last summer and it was really good. Aragami was tight and both Azumi's are good too. Shinobi was good, same story line as the anime Basilisk, and Battle Royale is bad ass. Bokoku no aegis (or aegis) was a cool one i saw with the dude who plays Ujio in the last samurai, hes also in Twilight samurai which was kinda slow, but still had a nice story. And of course all the old school Akira Kurosawa samurai movies like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai. They are remaking Sanjuro too right now, hopefully thats good.

Also like grandphornix said, akira is good. Another bad ass anime movie is Jin-Roh. Princess Mononoke from back in the day is always baller too.

The Grudge was shitty. I'm honestly baffled by how anyone thought that was a good horror movie. What was with all the white people in Japan? It was stupid shit.

Jin-Roh is amazingly good too.
Never get tired of Princess Mononoke either.

Folks always love Spirited Away, but personally, I prefered Howls moving Castle.
