Maybe some of you know the name. How about Paul Bernardo? Those of us that lives in Canada (and or over 22-23 yo) most definately remember those 2 names, that couple that made the news 13 years ago for horrific crimes.
For those who don't, here are 2 sites that I find have the best recap of the whole story:

You probably also heard of the upcoming movie, Deadly. Well, that is the story of Karla Homolka. I think it's scheduled to be released soon, after the famillies of the victims approve it.
Basically, here's what happened: Karla and Paul were a couple that seemed like the perfect one. But they had a saddist little secret and that was to abduct, rape and kill (one of them dismembered) little girls, as young as 12. Not only that, but their first victim was actually Karla's little sister, that she offered to Paul, on Christmas Eve, in her parents house while they were asleep in the next room.
Eventually, they were caught, I'll let you read the whole story from the 2 sites mentionned above. Karla is the one that came forth and said Paul was the Scarborough's rapist (he had rape more women then they killed). Doing that, she was in a good position to play they victim of Paul's mind-game. She talked to the DA and made a deal with them. She would testify against Paul and help them convict him and in return, they she would be sentenced to 12 years in prison for participating. A somewhat weak sentence given the crimes, but only because she was in a way a victim as well.
Or was she..... after the judgement had been passed and she was sentenced, inspectors found tapes at the Bernardo's house, showing that Karla was as much a participant as Paul was, if not even more. The tapes displayed how twisted this person was. But it was too late, she had already been snetenced and one person cannot be judged twice for the same crime.
So, she basically fooled the inspectors. Of course, she was denied any chance of getting out of jail earlier then at the end of the sentence. So what good was it for her to work on therapy, if it was not going to help her get out? That area I think is still blur, wether or not she followed therapy seriously.
And now, it has been 12 years. At the age of 35, Karla Homolka will be released from prison in 3 weeks. Rumors are claiming she would move to Montreal or somewhere in Quebec, under a different name of course. Every specialist that have examined her recently, every cell-mates that lived with her all say the same thing: she is still very much dangerous. She has made no progress, showed no remorse for what she has done. And in 3 weeks, that person will be set free and there is nothing no one can do about it.
Well.... DAs in Ontario and Quebec are trying to do something, have a motion to have her put under surveillance. So here comes my question to you guys, what do you think of all this.
Having this person, if she is still dangerous, walking freely amongst us is a scary tought. Having her put under surveillance would be the thing to do. But technically, she has served her time, she is now, in the eyes of the law, a free citizen like you and I.
So, if indeed there is something done, wether it's restrictions on places to go or people to see, constant surveillance of her whereabouts and activities, it sets a precedent. If the law allows it for Karla, then technically, any free citizen can be put under the same kind of surveillance/ conditions, simply for being suspected of being dangerous.
Now, before confusing 2 different situation, one may say that they already do it when someone is suspected of a crime.... but Karla committed no crimes yet. The ones she did, 12 years ago, she served her sentenced.
So, don't get me wrong, I am all for keeping an eye on her, but does'nt it violated some kind of right that we all have, called our privacy?
Please discuss.
By the way, Paul Bernardo was sentenced to life, with a minimum of 25 years.
