Rage Against The Machine have snatched the Christmas number one from X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

The US rap metal band topped the chart with their 1992 hit Killing In The Name after an internet campaign to keep Simon Cowell's act off the festive top spot.

McElderry, 18, took his defeat graciously, saying: "This time last year I never thought for one minute that I'd win The X Factor, never mind have a debut single out.

"I'm just delighted to be in the charts."

He added: "It's been such an incredible couple of months, and I got the best Christmas gift I could ever have asked for in winning The X Factor."

Killing In The Name sold more than 500,000 copies in the past week, while McElderry's The Climb chalked up sales of 450,000.

Pop mogul Cowell offered his congratulations to the couple behind the internet campaign, Jon and Tracy Morter.

He said: "I am gutted for Joe because a number one single meant a lot to him, but I have to congratulate Jon and Tracy. They turned this into a very exciting race for the Christmas number one.

"I am proud of Joe - he worked really hard this week, but he has a great year ahead of him."

Martin Talbot from the Official Charts Company said: "Congratulations to Rage Against The Machine on their number one. Overhauling any X Factor winner in the race for the Christmas number one is no mean achievement.

"But congratulations too should also go to Joe McElderry. He has still achieved one of the highest weekly sales of any single this year.

Gennaro Castaldo, from high street retailer HMV, said the bad weather could have prevented McElderry fans getting to the shops to buy his CD.

He said: "This is a truly remarkable outcome - possibly the greatest chart upset ever. Everyone thought the momentum was with Joe going into the weekend.

"The Rage Against The Machine internet campaign galvanised music fans to protest against the dominance of the reality show in recent years."

"Rage Against The Machine may not be the ideal expression of the Christmas spirit, but their anti-corporate message proved a perfect vehicle through which to register such a powerful protest."

The US band said on their website they would play a free UK gig if their song went to No1.

The past four Christmas number ones were by X Factor winners. Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah last year was one of the biggest selling festive singles ever.

Thank god for that. The Christmas No 1 charts have been incredibly dull ever since The X Factor started. I say Congrats to Rage Against the Machine and the Facebook group who made this possible! =)

The whole thing was stupid. I'm no fan of this Joe guy, hell I don't really like X factor besides Leona Lewis to be fair.

They wanted to 'stick it' to Simon Cowell well they did the opposite he made more money from this than ever.

"The plan was to cock a snook at Simon Cowell, left, to break his apparent stranglehold on the charts. Fuck you, I won't buy Joe McElderry, if you will. The fact that Cowell's record label, Syco, is a subsidiary of Sony Music, the same corporation that holds the rights to Killing in the Name is an irony they probably won't want to linger on."

If they put any thought into it they would of picked another song lol.

ok, I'm confused. what the hell does killing in the name of have to do with Christmas?
why is a song like 15 years old topping the chart now, and wtf is the x factor. and what does it have to do with ethier o.O

It has nothing to do with Christmas, it's more of an anti authority song so I guessed it got picked for that reason.

Because some people decided to be cynical and childish.

X Factor is like the whole so and so's got talent show but focuses mainly on singing. It's to do with Christmas because by the time the show is finished it's pretty much Christmas and because this new winner is the new shit everyone buys the single. It's happened for the last couple of years now, at least. Not that it really matters and it never bothered me, people buy what they want.

Technically they aren't giving Simon their money, they are giving Sony their money. He's not getting any money from the sales of Killing in the Name. Furthermore the charts had become WAY to predictable, and Simon became Arrogant by basically saying that the Xmas No 1 was theirs BY RIGHT, and shouldn't belong to anyone else, in a manner of speaking.

IMHO, Anyone who has to use The X Factor to get Christmas No 1 DOES NOT DESERVE THE NO 1 SLOT! The Xmas No 1 has to be gained by their own talents, and I do not recognize "Talent" that was "found" on The X Factor. Spoon fed Talent is not real talent, you can probably understand why I dislike Leona Lewis a little more now and why I call her a Talentless hack.

It has nothing to do with Xmas, it's topping the charts because of a Facebook campaign to spice up the British Music charts because they've been way to predictable since that crappy reality show started, and The X Factor is what American Idol is, but British.

I say, good for RATM, now, hopefully we can re-create this astounding success next year with something a little more new and and underground next year.

Edit: Coincidently, RATM are doing a Free Concert sometime next year to celebrate this victory. You won't see any of those X Factor hacks do that.

That about sums it up.

You don't know that. They very may well give their own free concerts, but they may not be able to sing the songs they normally do as the rights currently belong to whomever owns them - sadly.

I like Rage Against the Machine as much as any other anti-authority guy in the world, but I cannot believe they went along with this moronic campaign.

In all honesty, I think Zach De La Rocha is the talentless shit in the whole thing. Nothing but a goddamn Lars Ulrich with dreadlocks.

Can you quote Simon saying the above statement? I wouldn't call it spoon fed talent they have to give it their all for the public to let them become successful.

Can you please tell me why you consider her talentless? I mean I dislike many genres of music but I can see the artists within said genres talent regardless. So if you just dislike mainstream music in general because it's mainstream then maybe you need to actually look at what it is rather than 'mainstream'.

Oh and also, regarding free concerts, I know Olly Murrs (the runner up of this years show) is performing on stage at the night club I normally go to and it's the usual entry price and usual drink price. Sure the nightclub may pay him some to come down but it's not going to make them much of a profit.

I want you to listen to the voice, not the genre of the 'mainstreamness' of it. You have to admit she has a fairly good voice, good enough to not be called Talentless I should hope.
