I'm trying to gear up for kiting Kirin. So far, this is what I could think of (I haven't authenticated myself on FFXIAH.com, so I'm using Allah's equipment tool)

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?194449

There are a couple slots that I couldn't think of a good option, but any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

I've done it several times, using:

Earth Staff / grip which gives HP / blank / Happy Egg or Fenrir Stone
Genbu Helm / Bloodbeat Amulet / Intruder's / Pigeon
Osode (to make intruder's work) / Seiryu Hands / Bomb Queen Ring / Jelly Ring
Resentment / Ocean Belt / Ogre Trousers / Marine F Boots

I go for a HP setup as chances are no matter what you stack on top you're going to take little to no difference in damage against the defense added on. Going for Emnity is kinda pointless as I noticed with Charm you can build hate up quite fast.

You can fit Resentment Cape for Gigant Mantle and Jelly Ring for Bloodbead but I had no such luxuries.

If Intruder's don't work, hard luck I guess. Also, I won't go for that neck piece either. You will not recover enough HP for it to be of any benefit to you (tic, 1, tic, 1, tic 1.... compared to tic, SMASH 150~500 damage, tic, SMASHHHH boom die)

If you get Skadi Feet those should help you a lot, I wish to try kiting Kirin again if I ever get Skadi Feet.

Note that a few times I kited Kirin I never died but it took me 3-4 snarls to get Kirin completely off me and onto CC. Snarl does NOT remove ALL hate it seems. So while I struggled to get Kirin off me without death, I continued kiting while TheFlock had a stream of flying demons and angry crabs chasing after it.

You might struggle with getting within range for charm early in the fight until hate is established but if you want you can always swap out the gear for HP gear over time, or don't get hit as much so the WHM isn't dumping cures on you.

You wouldn't use Ogre Jerkin and and HP+ earring?

Pure fashion reasons, ogre trousers was ugly enough and as I was in a somewhat important role, I refused to die or kite Kirin in a leather ORANGE UGLY top. So I wanted to look somewhat cool and showed the other (at the time) aspiring first time all BST-SMN kirin fights what it was like...

Otherwise that earring is useless if it won't work, and also if I didn't use Osode I had no other +mp gear. You could of course swap it for a pigeon (or Stoic) and wear ogre jerkin on top as well, but this depends on how motivated you feel when you DIEEEE HORRIBLY looking like a orange.

^ Yeh the above is petty but hey I was good enough to not die at all or often and I knew what I was doing so it didn't matter as much haha, but if called for I will swap.

Right now, this is going to be a purely poor-mans, low budget, AH kite build. I have Genbu's hat, but not Seiryu's hands, Osode or some other RA/EX type gear. I'm going to work on it, but depending on when we do Kirin, I probably won't have some of this gear.

That's fine

Body: Ogre *cring*
Hands: Pallas's Bracelets (+35 HP. 20k) / Trainer's Gloves (+20 HP, 3k)
Rings: Tamer's MIGHT save you in the critical situation but don't count on it.
Earrings: -magic damage taken is good but I don't think it'll help much against Kirin's Stonega IV if it lands on you, not sure about its special moves
Neck: Bloodbead Amulet

By all means try the emnity setup, you might keep hate better than you think.

Are you still on this server? brb going home.

Yea, I'm still here. Running with Honcho's new LS.

Just focus on ENM+, HP+, and lastly CHR+

I say CHR+ because Charm Bind is rare, but you CAN make it much less rare, use HQ light and swap back to Terra's afterwards. Do the same as long as you arent losing it on an ENM+ or HP+ slot. On the back I would use High Breath, gives you some HP+ and Enm+5. The same goes for damage down stuff, you can always swap that during charm and then swap back into it. I'd say what is of greater use than magic damage down would be a resist set to some of his moves, but I have never tried it.

Killer effects are useful, Tamers though id put in only when the latent is in effect.

Nodawa is alright, but you may think about putting the lvl 70+ enmity piece on instead, the Regen will not be make or break, its good to stack enmity honestly because other kiting type jobs are able to spam enmity abilities much easier than you.

It's up to you for the enm+ equip, but once you get good from kiting only those wind/breath moves should hit you and they don't do that much damage. And once Kirin gets hold of you, it's kinda hard to get out, depending on how quick your mages are with erasing bind.

Also, if you can, blink out when charming (like you do when you try to charm something) and blink back in with something else so you don't stop when charm kiting. Otherwise that is a major downfall.

Couple of things, first why are you kiting on BST? I know it can work, but would think it simpler to let a pld/nin do it.

Also, wouldn't recommend Jelly ring, every time i've kited Kirin the only thing that's hit me (with the exception of last run when i didn't notice Quake eating my last shadow and then stood in range of an 1800 TP move <_< ) is magic, stonega4, astral flow, etc. It's rare, but sometimes it does happen.

On PLD i focus on Haste > Enmity > HP, but obviously it's a little different for BST because haste is irrelevant. I'd say try to hit 1500~1600HP if possible, so that if you do eat any spells it wont 1 shot you, after that stack enmity everywhere.

I might be way off on this because i'm not a bst expert, far from it lol but i'd make a set look something like this:

Terra/Shark or HP grip/ - /Fenrir Stone
Genbu/Ritter gorget/pigeon/pigeon
Ogre/Gothic/Mermaid's(enmity+)/Bomb queen
Gigant/Warwolf or RSE if +HP/AF/Askar

Taken as much of what you posted as possible and tried to keep the other pieces cheap, Kirin really is easy to kite though and if you're good at keeping shadows up there should be no problem.

Honcho's old LS (which I was part of) traditionally used all BSTs & SMNs (and the random PUP here and there). The LS has long disbanded but recently revived by Honcho, who probably still wants it done this way.

I suppose to answer the "why" bit:

1. BST can make it work, when bind lands on Charms (or if there's up to 3-4 BSTs kiting) Kirin can easily be crippled.

2. They perhaps don't have a PLD for the job

Just a guess, I've did it more or less flawlessly on both BST and PLD except at times where there was no escape or shit piles on the top of shit I accumulated (binded, eat stonega 4, no shadows, etc). XD

Thanks for the advice guys. I was asked if I wanted to kite it, and I thought it would be fun (as well as get me out of the monotony of coming either WHM or BLM to everything), and if/when I die, we do have PLDs that can pick up where I left off. To be honest, I might just be there as a backup.

Bladewind: Even though I was farming for Gothic hands, would Seiryu Kote be better for the +50 HP?

It depends on your Hp, honestly that set was a little light on enmity imo so i would be tempted to stick with gothic.

You didn't mention food either, if you're going to use Gigant/Seiryu I'd be tempted to use an enmity food, like dorado sushi, however it might be wise to wear more enmity, Gothic+Resentment, and eat HP food like Carbonara. The only thing i will say is that i don't remember the base HP you need to reach the full +175HP.

When are you doing Kirin.

Invite me, I'd like to help.

EDIT: If I can/am available (although unlikely due to timezone clashes)

Since we're a new shell, we were warming up with multiple runs on the other gods, but Kirin should be coming up very soon. Shell runs Tuesday/Thursday starting at 7:00 p.m. EST.

Have a thf in the alliance following kirin and spam feint as well. it wont help with the tanking aspect but when rawr helped theflock with some kirins the bsts said they got a noticably higher hit rate on kirin and it sped the killl time up greatly.

Once you get decent at kiting kirin i personally prefer magic damage down gear myself. If kirin wants to kill you with physical attacks he's going to kill you generally. The thing that causes the most deaths in my experience is the magical damage you take when you messup( you normally have shadows to prevent death from the physical moves)
