Here's the situation: I've been working on leveling, getting sky, and then pursuing my next priority, my passion, which is acquiring maps. I get to 75, pursue some of my other priorities, and start getting around to working on rank again. Yah, at 75, it starts to get a bit embarrassing to be working on Windy 6-1... but you can't do everything at once.
Last night I was in Windurst Woods, doing some halloween stuff with my gf, and a guy I know and like is periodically shouting for help with Windy 6-1. No big deal, but I couldn't help then because I'd made a commitment to help others with ZM5.
This morning, up early, I start thinking about it and decide working on 6-1 is not a bad thing to do today so, following what I saw yesterday, I head to Windy and create a shout macro on a 59 second timer to echo a reminder to me. I nice, simple, /sh Windurst Mission 6-1 do you need it, please /tell Firebrand
Here's conversation that ensued, verbatim:
Kolid >> You really should shut up with the spam
Me >> I'm only doing it every minute
Kolid >> Which is what we call "spam"
Me >> Any other helpful, construcive advice?
Kolid >> Yeah, shouting in Jeuno is a little smarter
Mi >> k, please remind me never to party with you or help you, big guy...
Kolid >> sure noob ^^
Kolid >> wow O.O
Kolid >> lv 75 and Rank 6 O.O
Me >> It's amazing how some people love to belittle or be wet blankets on others ... you're the kind I most love to avoid
Me >> blist goodbye
Kolid >> noobs are the kind I avoid
Kolid >> Thank You Amateur
I checked with my linkshell to see if anyone knew him, and told them what happened. A couple of them said he never seems to have trouble spamming for help in Jeuno.
The more I thought about it the more it just grated on me ... so I checked the posts he's put on here. What I've seen seems to support my impression of him - namely, he's the kind of guy who really seems to have only one way to get his rocks off - either in the game or in real life - namely, by belittling others and by calling anyone who disagrees with him or disputes what he says a noob. Its people like that who cast a pall on the game for a lot of others.
Don't get me wrong. Am I a bit embarrassed that my rank is only 6, while my level is 75? lol, hell yes! That's precisely what I was trying to remedy. Could I have shouted less often? yes. In this particular case, though, I elected to go do other things for a while. Would I have better luck on a Saturday morning "spamming" in Jeuno? Don't know, it's a matter of opinion and luck, I think.
On the other hand, though:
Do I have to put up with asshats whose only way to justify their existence is to bring others down and pick any way they can to try to belittle or embarrass them? Unfortunately, yes - but I don't have to like it.
Do others in the game have to do the same thing? Unfortunately, yes - but none of THEM like it.
Do I have to take it lying down, and be a doormat? Hell no, and I won't - but that kind of interaction, with people like that can and will indeed be a downer in what would otherwise be a good day for anyone.
I've seen this kind of behavior in a lot of parties, too. If I'm a party leader, I give one warning and then kick the offending person if they keep it up. I've never minded the down time involved in finding a replacement, and neither has the rest of the party. It's truly nice to have fun in a party, and not worry about someone belittling everyone else and how they're playing.
The entire thing just grated on me. And now, at least, I'm done venting.
Take care, everyone, and have good days.
