I have retarded question to ask you guys. And my question is, can you play FFXI online on Laptop computers? Please respond to my question, i would be glad if you can. Thank you ^^

I play ffxi on my laptop.......and mines an hp pavilion zt3000

you just have to make sure that it doesen't overheat and blow up.....

like mine did before >.>

I started playing XI on my laptop before it died, so yes it's definitely possible. One thing you will have to do is change your keyboard layout from full to compact, since you will not have a numpad for your laptop.

I have been playing on my laptop for several months now because one of my main desktop computers harddrives screwed up. And I actually enjoy playing on it.

But I suggest getting a large size keyboard to plug in and use with it instead of the compact laptop keyboard. It's much much easier.

Yes it can so long as your laptop has a realish video card. Basicaly if your laptop is at all new (Last 2-3 years) Then odds are yes it will run it fine. I use a laptop myself.

I know many people who say they play on a laptop, definitely possible, just make sure it has all the minimum requirements at least needed for the game.

The most common problem with playing games that requires Hardware Transform and Lighting on laptops, is the video chipset. Make sure the chipset supports "Hardware TnL," and you'll be able to play no problem.

So you trying to say that if the chipset is going to blow up if it cant take it? And btw how long do you guys recommend me playing on my laptop? 6-8hrs? Or less? Please advice me ^^.

LOL, ok, if you have a mainstream 'run of the mill' laptop (/em gets jealous at the mention of Alienware laptops) can you please list the model?

Im after a midrange laptop to replace my desktop, and its going to need to be able to play FFXI reasonably well, my partner has a laptop and it cant handle the hardware tnl at all, even with 3D-A.

Thanks

Sorry but i am a noob that this laptop stuff, but what do you that your partner cant handle the handware tnl? you mean does it go slower? Or does it look wierd? Please comfirm plz?

I installed the FFXI Benchmark III program, installed fine, double clicked the shortcut and it went to the settings screen.

Now no matter what settings I choose (low res / high rest / bench only / demo only) after I click OK on the settings the screen goes black (as it is loading the first part of the benchmark) then returns back to the desktop with a popup box saying 'Hardware TnL not supported with this videocard'.

I downloaded 3D-Analyser, and tried multiple settings, but again, the same errors as above.

Im tempted to install the full game onto the laptop, but Im not looking forward to the 4 hour update time (granted less if I physically backup my current PCs data and transfer) and leaving my partner without the laptop while she has to work on it.

Im currently looking at a Dell Inspiron 9100 (ATI Radeon 9700) laptop on eBay, hopefully if I can get one cheap enough it should work fine.

hey ive been playing on laptop for about 4 mths im using gateway M680XL it has built in number pad like full size keyboard 17"widescreen and raedeon x850 graffics card and the game runs great
alienware i believe has some cheaper laptops now that will be more than able to run ffxi and many other games without a problem and they are nowhere near as expensive as they used to be.....

I play on a Vaio, with wireless connection it rocks!!!

If you're looking for a laptop, look at velocitymicro.com, or if you want more trusted and known companies, Dell is good. (Yes, Dell, I know what im talking about).

Alienware's support is bad, their computers have nothing that other default manufacturers dont have, and are often overpriced. If you want bragging rights, get an Alienware, if you want similar performance at a lesser price, get Dell or Velocitymicro.

I play on my new laptop, now. (Using desktop as a file server mostly these days.) I have a Dell E1705.

From Dell:
Dual core 1.8ghz/667 FSB
NVidia 7800 go w/ 256mb
512mb DDR2 PC4200
60gig SATA 5400rpm
$1200

Upgraded:
2gigb DDR2 PC5300
80gig SATA 7200rpm
$300

All settings on FFXI are hi, on, etc. I get no video lag running through Jeuno or playing SMN w/ a BRD in PT. I picked up a numpad and wireless mouse. But I’m considering a Logitech wireless game pad. All in all, I love my notebook. I can sit by the fireplace, in bed, or even on the can. (What’s AFK?) :P heheh, kidding. Laptops are a great way to play MMO’s. Just need to find a hotspot or don’t wonder too far from your home network.

Edit: After formatting and setting up the new HDD, the only issue I’ve had was getting “laptop” drivers for the video. laptopvideo2go.com drivers worked well.

Sup E1705 buddie, I love this thing, if I was fat and had XXL pants I would put it down there.

Dell underclocked the video card so it wouldn't directly compete with their gaming brand. If you notice recently they removed the 7800 as an option citing a "shortage." You get another 15% speed increase if you restore the proper clockrate.

Although with the shit engine FFXI has this doesn't matter, but if you play other games it's very nice :p

Shame you can only get some x1300 piece of shit with this laptop now.

I started the game on laptop, and after many, many, many deaths from my laptop craptoping out, i have to say, get a pc...

If you're looking for a laptop research the graphics chipset. A google search should do it. If you're planning on buying a laptop from Dell and it lists Intel as a video chipset make sure it's at least a Intel Media Accelerator 900+ and NOT Extreme Graphics chiset. I have a Dell XPS M140 (AKA Inspiron 630m) and it runs fine...I can't get windower to run for some reason though.

*EDIT 5/15/2006* As Reference for those who actually took the time to search for this. Windower 3.22 works with the Dell XPS M140 now.

Intel Corporation and Square Enix Collaborate
Intel Corporation and Square Enix recently announced that FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows can now be played on mainstream consumer PCs with the Intel 915G Express chipset which is supported by an integrated graphics technology. In the past, additions of costly external graphics card were required to play FINAL FANTASY XI on a PC due to its advanced graphics.

The Intel 915G Express chipset is a key component for volume mainstream PCs for the second half of 2004 and beyond, and its internal "Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (GMA900)" achieved 1.7 times of 3D graphics performance1 compared to Intel's previous generation chipset with integrated graphics.

"We are very pleased to announce that FINAL FANTASY XI can now be played on high-volume, consumer PCs featuring the Intel 915G Express chipset with integrated graphics, in time for the holiday season," said Bill Siu, Intel's vice president and general manager of the Desktop Platforms Group. "With this new PC, more consumers can take advantage of the new media capabilities in graphics and audio to experience the excitement of 3D online games like FINAL FANTASY XI."

"Combining Intel's integrated graphics technology and Square Enix's software technology, we can enable more consumers with affordably priced PCs to play FINAL FANTASY XI, a game which requires intense graphics performance. We are so pleased with the timing as FINAL FANTASY XI and the expansion pack, Chains of Promathia, are both now open to European gamers. The expansion pack is already available to Japanese users and will soon be released to other supported regions such as North America, making FINAL FANTASY XI a truly global experience. We hope to provide new gaming experiences on various PC platforms with the continued collaboration between the two companies," said Yoichi Wada, President of Square Enix.

"In the online game market segment, the high performance PC is the leading platform and given the broadband infrastructure advances in Japan, we must have faster growing opportunity in this market," said Kazumasa Yoshida, Representative Director and Co-President, Intel K.K. "Intel desires to expand PC and online game market in Japan by collaborating with the leading game industry companies like Square Enix in technology and marketing."

Intel and Square Enix have also been collaborating on FINAL FANTASY XI performance optimization for PCs featuring the Intel Pentium 4 processor supporting Hyper-Threading Technology.

FINAL FANTASY XI is played by half a million people world-wide and is the first cross-platform, cross-continent massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The two companies will continue collaborating to enrich content running on PC platforms and reach more end users, not only in Japan but world-wide.
