When some Japanese exchange students came to my school(17 total, 15 girls and 2 boys) all the girls were wearing the funniest shirts. We all asked them if they understood what was on them, but they didn't. They bought the shirts because of the cute pictures.
I've even seen some Engrish here in America. I went to an asian market/bookstore for a field trip with my Japanese class. In the women's restrooms there was a little sign over the toilet, "Please do not flash anything other than the attached toilet paper." I'm supprised no one's pointed it out before that there was a problem. My friends had a good laugh about it, but it just shows a lot of people are unaware of what they're writing or buying(in the case of clothes.)
A lot of Americans will get tattoos of kanji on their arm, or by clothes with kanji on them, but never really think to look it up to see if it really means what you think it does. Somewhere I have a link to a website of actual people who got tattoos with kanji meaning nothing what they think it did.
