Good discussion thus far. The original poster double posted this in the general and the crafting boards on the vault, and was subsequently torn apart by players, legit and otherwise.
Here are some excerpts from my post on the subject (because I want to argue with you cunts):
2. Cap botters don't hurt the economy. They have more gil than you, well crap. There will always be people with more gil. The vendor system in FFXI ensures that there is limitless amounts of Gil circulating through Vana'diel at any given time. Some of you may say "doesn't this cause inflation? That's what my professor in Economics told me." You forget who has the majority of that Gil. The botters. I've been playing for about 4 months. The JPs for almost 2 years now. If it wasn't Cap botting in Rabao it was botting the cliffs of Saruta. If this really affected the economy as much as everyone likes to think it does, then 1 friggin mithkabob would cost 20,000. Come on.
5. Final Point: This is tied in with the lack of inflation. Items in this game do not decay. Does anyone else realize what this means. You don't ever really buy anything in this game. You rent it. You sell it back. At any given time you may find 1 or 2 of a rare item on sale at the AH, but there are 100s if not 1000s of said item on the server. Hairpin may be expensive, but it is by no means rare. If you count how many are on the AH, and how many people own one you'd be surprised. The economy in this game isn't based on Supply and Demand, because Demand is pretty much constant once a server reaches its peak. The Supply is infinite. The prices of items are based solely on what the price the last one sold for.
If SE wanted, or cared for that matter, about setting up a realistic economy (whether it be an American or Japanese based economy) they would make gear consumable, and they would have to remove NPCs that buy items from you. But since they would never do that, botting continues, gil-selling continues, and whining continues.
There were a couple guys willing to debate with me, basing their arguements on the fact that they have financing degrees and political economics degrees and some other bull-shit. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean shit in a GAME world. The quickly shut their pie-holes after they realized I was right. Alas, no good competition these days.
See you in Rabao. I usually hang out next to Grenade and those three adorable little Taru bots that always walk around together.
