Looks like FFXIV is getting adventuring fellow NPCs too

From the wording it sounds like it may possibly just be a "sidekick," such as Prishe or Lion, that assists you in the storyline quests. Though also kind of sounds like an NPC fellow.

I was a big fan of these in FFXI but it makes me wonder how necessary they are in FFXIV which is already very solo friendly, not to say I'd turn down the ability to get one.

It would certainly make the game more solo friendly, and I really can't judge if that's a good thing or not until more content is released.

If you do the main story quest line, you always have NPCs helping you for most of the fights and you can only do these fights solo with those NPCs. Could they be talking about that? I'll go read that article though to have a better understanding.

I read that as "Looks like FFXIV is getting the miracle patch" then clicked the thread and whimpered instead :/
