Losing weight ...

Incidentally the someone someone General has put out new guidelines that say if you want to maintain weight you need to exercise 60 minutes a day, and if you want weight loss you need to do it 90 minutes daily.

Actually Sculli, I was told ankle weights are very bad for you and to use weights in your hand when walking.

PS. We get beads for walking from April, our Leader at Weight Watchers. And I love to walk, I just hate the cold. I wish I had room for a machine here where I live. I'd be in heaven^^.

When I was younger I was fat... What I started doing was situps, pushups, and walking in front of the TV, around the tables and couches and stuff. It seemed to work, I think. I sweated, and was entertained, haha. Then again, we don't have cold here... and I could've walked outside... but I'm shy. ^^;

edit: forgot to mention. Damn you're short. 100lbs must still put you at a good physique for someone of that height, why lose more?

I'm not short, I'm tiny^^.

Okay guys, best way I can describe myself right now is I'm in a pair of 30 waist 30 length guys Levi's jeans at this point in time. They fit perfect. I look okay in them, but I still have a good 20 lbs. (mebbe a tad more) to lose according to my chart and my opinion. My Mom thinks I'm nuts.

When I was in High School I wore size 3's and 5's. They didn't have 0's, 1's and 2's back then. Size 3 was the smallest.

Anyway, I'm in a Woman's size 8 Petite right now. Matter of fact my Mom took me shopping for my Birthday in October so I know this to be my most recent size. By the time I get to my goal weight, I'll be back in those woman's size 3's & 5's (I'm 44 years old, have hips from childbirthing, so I know I'll probably never see myself in a size 2 or less). As far as jeans go, I should be in a guys 27-28 waist and that same 30 length. I like my jeans a tad long.

My apologies. I always get the short & tiny people confused... you all just look so small from up here.

I've done almost every diet Kat, and every diet(ask Jasper or anyone else that knows me RL). and for every one I have done I've always hit a plateau. I regularly work out 2 times a day 1~1.5 hour each. To me the plateau is a normal thing in dieting. Just keep doing what your doing and it'll start to go back down on it's own I'm pretty sure. It always happens to me. :bb:

I have never really had a problem with weight but I try to lose some every now and again. Typically I learned a diet when I was in college through the basketball program that helps me tons. Well anyways this is what I did.

1. I know its hard to stay active as far as physically but that always helps.
2. No soda. (FYI my father gave up soda only for a year and lost 50 lbs with no other change in diet)
3. Instead of eating less eat more often. When most people try and lose wieght they eat less. This actually hurts weight loss in the long run because your metabolism gets screwed up. Eat 4-5 small portion meals a day. I used to eat a banana for breakfest, turkey sandwich at 10ish, turkey sandwich at 2ish, somthing like grilled chicken and vegetables at 6ish. This will cause your metabolism to stay up constantly instead of dipping down.

Now this worked for me. I lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks by doing those 3 things when I first started. I am a bit different shape then you (6'5, 220) and also younger (23). However I got my dad on this diet and he has constantly been losing weight. Just figured I would say what worked for me and my pops.

PS. To me it doesnt sound like you really need to be concerned about losing wieght. GL.

Thankee Tenkies^^. <3.

Thank you also BigDaddy and everyone else. I soooo appreciate your input.

I am definitely going to go to eating more frequent meals.

Steve does cuz he drives a truck all day and he's in the thing from about 5:30 am to 4:30 pm. So he pretty much eats all day long but spaces his food out. He's lost 40 lbs. to date. Thing is he cheats like crazy!!! Really ticks me off too, grrrrr. Drinks beer, eat's pickles and olives and all kinds of salty foods and STILL loses every week!!!! Anyway ...

As far as pop goes ... I will cut it down even more, but I just cannot give up my pop. I get very very testy when I don't have my pop. I wish I loved water, it would make it so much easier, but unfortunately I have to force myself to drink the allotted amount every day.

One last thing I really really need to point out. Weight Watchers to me is not a "diet". It is totally revamping the way you eat food. Teaching you not only how to eat right, but to eat healthy. I was such a junk food junkie. It got so bad that Steve, his brother Ryan and I would go to Uncle Lars (best pizza in the world imho), and literally eat 2 large thin crust cheese and sausage pizza's once a week. I will never go back to eating like that again. The way I eat foods now is how I will eat them for the rest of my life. I'm not saying I'm never gonna eat pizza again (that will be the FIRST thing I go eat when I reach my goal weight, I've been saying that since last June; a Wendy's double cheeseburger will be my second^^), but it won't be like it was.

Our mentor in this whole thing is Steve's oldest brother David. He lost 60 lbs. last year using the Weight Watchers program. We call him every Tuesday nite after we weigh in and on our way to Subway and let him know our progress. I have to say we're having a blast with this, and Tuesdays are now my favorite day of the week ^^.

My friend Cristin is in Weight Watchers, but also joined Curves to make sure she gets the exercise she needs as well. She loves and swears by their program. It's basically 30 minutes 3 times a week, so she usually just stops by the place on her way home from work. She's actually gotten to the point now where at the end of October she was fit enough to participate in a breast cancer walk-a-thon: 60 miles in 2 days.

They have a Curves in Sandwich. I should check into the pricing for that. Thanks Fellina.

Sandwich is the name of your city? I thought you were joking before.

Actually I'm from a town called Batavia, born and raised thru High School. Steve and I moved to Leland 13 years ago, this next April. Sandwich is 2 towns away from us.

Needless to say, yes Sandwich, Illinois is a true town^^.

Loosing weight is easy. Don't be like me. *drives to Hardee's*

Wow 4 pages already. I haven't read through all the posts but this is my input.

Seriously I would simply recommend having a log of what you eat, which I would assume that weight watchers already has you do. If not, then that is a great way to see the areas that can be tightened up. Also realize that the closer that you get to your goal, assuming that you don't increase your activity and keep your daily caloric intake the same, the slower your loss will be.

So a general increase of your physical activity or even switching up what you are doing.

Lower you caloric intake slightly.

Gain a little more muscle. Strength training ftw!

All those things will hasten weight loss.

I lost 40 pounds over the course of about 2 years by cutting my portions down (which is what Weight Watchers teaches you to do, so ROCK ON!) and doing ESCAPE YOUR SHAPE at home 4-5 times per week:

http://www.exude.com/item.asp?itemid=9&catid=7

Now I maintain keeping my weight off by working at CURVES:

www.curves.com

Which is a 30 minute workout for women that includes cardio and resistence machines. <---these are what toned me up. <3 I think most women forget about building muscle, which helps keep weight off considerably. I think it is something like for every 5lbs of muscle you gain, that is an extra 400 calories that your body burns, while you sleep.

*******************

Advice, as a trainer - I always tell people that taking weight off IS having to adjust your diet AND get going on an exercise program. **HOWEVER - I wouldn't recommend starting both at once. Get used to one thing, then ease yourself into the other. Starting both at once is going to be too hard (you will be hungry CONSTANTLY) and often people end up getiting frustrated and quitting both.

DIET
I started portioning better when I finally decided to shed my extra pounds. Also - I eat tons of fruit/veggies as my daily snacks (instead of bringing chips to work, I bring carrot sticks) I eat an apple before breakfast and lunch (I read somewhere that the fiber in the skin helps boost your metabolism, even if it doesn't - atleast I am getting my daily fruit dosage ;)) If I surround myself w/ only healthy snacks - the I CAN"T binge on cookies. <3

Also - I have a day, where I allow myself to eat my fav. things. On the weekends I get to have my Bagels for breakfast. <3 <3 <3 Bagels are my fav. food - if I took them out of my diet comletely, I would be a miserable person. So, instead of eating them every morning, like I WANT to - I wait until the weekend. That way, when I crave them - all I have to say is "3 more days till Saturday!!!!" Knowing that I WILL get to have a bagel, makes it so I don't drive myself crazy. I think that if I could never eat things like pizza or pasta, I would be a sad sad girl. So I eat them, just not half as often as before.

Also - fast food. The internet is your friend. If you KNOW you are going out to eat - or know you will have to grab a quick dinner on the way home - you can always go on McDonalds, Wendys, Subways websites...they now have all thier calories listed. You can look at your fav. choices and pick the healthiest. ***A McDonald's ceasar salad has more calories than thier Big Mac. Thats how they get ya ;

May sound kinda funny but try a all chicken diet ( broiled baked things like that just not fried ) My grandmother and I did this in Las Vegas and within in 3 months i lost almost 30 pounds ....... our usual at night was chicken broccoli &cauliflower with a no carbs cheese and dessert we had something that was sugar free .... My grandmother is diabetic and the doctor told her to lose weight and i told her lets do it together she's 5ft maybe shorter but she stayed on it for about 6 months and lost 60 pounds we were very happy for her ...... this jan my husband and i are actually going to try it for new years resolution >.> lol its something he wants to do so thats gonna be our plan for the next year .

Good luck with the weight loss Kat !

Thanks again guys for all your suggestions, advice and if applicable, on how you're doin'/did it. Again, I really appreciate it.

For Ranpha: Thank you sooooo very much for the taking the time to PM me those exercises. I did a few of them this morning and they are perfect so far.

For MayMaythaBiznitch: Thanks for the input, but we practically live on chicken^^. We also get our meat from Schwan's so all our portions are already weighed out and vacuum packed.

For Jen: When you join Weight Watchers they have a start-up kit you can purchase. I, of course, purchased it for Steve and I. In that starter kit there are 2 types of food companions (one for home use and one for eating out). In the home one, there is listed virtually every food you could ever imagine to eat and what the point(s) are for each food. It even has all the different types of beer in it and what the points are per beer. Then there is one that has a ton of restaurants listed throughout the U.S., some of the foods on their specific menu, and what the points are for said food. They have definitely become my "bible's".

My big thing I miss Jen is peanut & jelly sandwiches on toast. So on Saturday when we are running around a lot, I usually make myself one. Difference is, I now use low fat peanut butter, 100% Smuckers fruit, and Butternut Lite bread^^. It still tastes good though.

I haven't had real sugar in months. If I eat something now with sugar in it, it's so rich to me I feel sick. If I try to drink 2% milk now it's like it used to be when I would try to drink whole milk. It's really unreal how your body changes and gets used to eating healthy and not wanting all that fat and junk food. I couldn't even imagine what a "real" potato chip would taste like to me these days vs. my Lay's Lite no fat chips.

pointers that helped me.

KAT

Hi. I am big on lifting weights cutting up and losing weight.

I can point out some stuff for you i dont think was mentioned here.
I DONT want to get TOO detailed just run over some thing for you and others who might be reading this.

1. eat 6 small meals a day.
-6 small meals so that your still a little hungry afterwards and you want more.
-this keeps your metabolism going and it will speed up eventually.
2. Eight hours of sleep is a must!
- Your body needs time to recover from the hard day of working and living in order to build back up for the next day.
3. Plenty of protein in your diet will lessen the hurt from lifting weights and strenous exercise.
-I have protein drinks, powders, Steaks to help me through my intake.
- I want to say 50g a day is good enough
4. WATER WATER WATER WATER.
- I can't stress this enough, water is your best friend and your lover when your on a diet.
- I drink.. close to.. 80 oz of water a day.
- Drink a tall glass of water with your meal BEFORE you eat and you wont be as hungry.
5. Lifting weights isnt just for men.
- Weights help reduce fat and build muscle at the same time.
- Your not going for the Arnold look, so light weight long reps would be needed.
6. Peanuts are a good snack food, any nuts that is.
- They also can be bad for you if you snack too much.
7.Cardio is a must... Cardio for at least a hour a day if you havent just started.
8. IMO <--[DISCLAIMER] I like to push my body beyond its breaking point.
IF my goal for that day is 60 pushups, straight. i do 60, and if the end of 60 i realize i could do more.. i do more. in sets of 10. not just 1 or 2 more. so the next day my new and forever goal is 70 pushups.

IF you can only walk 2-3 times a week. Pick up the pace.. jog or run in intervals.

Dont let this the err plateua[sp!] slow you down. change up the rythm and push harder!
8. Take a womans multi-vitamin. You can get 260 pills from GNC for 25$.

this is all i can think of right now.

I also have a great min abs video at home if you want me to send.

Thanks Stiggy^^.

And yes I should mention, I do take a multi-vitamin (called OneSource Complete) once per day. It's a multivitamin/multimineral supplement. Thanks for bringin' that up. I also take Vitamin C on top of that since we're in the cold/flu season 3 times per week.

The Weight Watchers program teaches you to stop eating when you are "satisfied" vs. full. So yah, I'm still to this day always ready to eat my next meal. Steve and I used to laugh about it. Before we started the program there was always leftovers. Now there are NEVER leftovers in my fridge^^.

Water ... ugh ... yah, I drink what I have to. I'm just not a water drinker. Again though, we have 5 gallon bottles of Nicollette water delivered to our house now and a cooler. I drink the allotted amount I'm supposed to per day, but I have to admit, I'm still forcing myself to drink it, even after 6 months.

I'll also take anything you'd like to send. I do not mind exercising at all. I just hate walking outside right now cuz it's cold. I hate the cold weather, not the excercise.
