Mages of Today

Well, after your Cures cap out, you should really start switching for more MP-gear, because more MP means more up time (which means more downtime, too :-\) There's nothing better than seeing your boyfriend who has way less MND and Healing Magic skill than you Cure 3 for one HP less than you. :-( Now I'm going to go cry. Thank you.

Not saying MND is unimportant, but when you start needing like 30+ MND just to increase Cure by 1 HP, you should really look into getting MP gear. It's better to have Taru MP plus all the extra MP you can get rather than just the Taru MP. INT for BLM, however, is another story. 1 INT can mean like 10 damage difference. Consider 10+ INT...

Well, I just love the threads where all of a sudden four jobs get the "God damn you ALL suck." Please emphasize the ALL some more.

You said Garliage... I'm not shocked to see NOOBs in Garliage. Heck, I'm not surprised to see NOOBs in Bibiki Bay.....

Of course, every mage is bad because all the mages someone has encountered has sucked... (and it sounds like in a NOOB zone) But ya... apparently I suck because I am a mage today. I should put "Mage of Yesterday" in my search comment so I'm not categorized in this new wave of mages.

It happens because... mages seem to be to the new speed levelling job (moreso than before). When Rangers were the "in thing" people were levelling the job with crappy subs, Ninja only at level 12, lack of equipment, no arrows, just because they're rangers.

I guess when more people level a certain job, you'll have a better chance of partying with idiots.

Never did I once say that all mages are noobs. That'd be putting me down too. I'm just simply saying that most mages now adays are speed-leveling, and they don't know what to do.

(SquareEnix really needs to put some new tanks and healers in this game to balance it out. Nine out of fifteen jobs are damage dealers. One is a main healer. Two are main tanks. One is solo. And two are support. Then Dragoons look around and ask "how come I can't get parties?" It's because 60% of the jobs in the game are damage-dealers.)

60% is about right, because about half the party is a damage dealer. You have tank, healer, refresher, then DD.

Time for my second rant on this Flameboard...
What the hell is up with the mages today? And I mean all mages. White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Bard... It's actually really scaring me. You see a White Mage in Garlaige that doesn't know how to cure. And when that WHM does cure, it takes it forever to get to it. Like... my friend was in a party a couple nights ago... and the WHM let two people die because she wasn't paying attention. I partied with another WHM a couple months ago that took him so long to cast Cure, I was dead before I got the mob down to like half health.

It's also making me feel strange seeing nothing but Elvaan BLM's leveling up now. Elvaan have the worst INT, and second-worst MP in the game. Compared to a Taru, who would do like 10x the damage that an Elvaan would do. Especially when seeing that Elvaan BLM's don't go for any other equipment other than DEF equip.

The Red Mages and Bards seem to do nothing but Refresh. That's not all they're good for. You see some good Bards out there that go back and forth and make sure every character has the exact right songs, then they help the healer with the curing and stuff. You see other Bards there that use Ballad, then maybe at the most would use Spirited Etude on the WHM (which still awes me because MND is damn useless for cures). Also, some RDM's are good and stuff, and they use Refresh, and Dispel, and Cure, and nukes... You see lots of RDM's who just spam Refresh on the party the whole fight. In fact, lots of times I have to spam "(Refresh) (Can I have it?)" to the RDM. Even then, the first priority of Refresh is themselves, then the BLM, then the PLD, then the DRK, then the WHM.

Or people who wear completely irrelivant armor to whatever mage job they're using. Like the WHM I partied with the other day, he was wearing STR and DEX equipment. He had no MP or MND equip on at all. Or the other WHM I saw wearing nothing but INT equip. Or BLM's wearing DEF equip.
The one I notice the most are Bards who wear nothing but MND and MP equipment. Especially when they're Mithra or something that actually NEEDS Charisma.

Also, I'm getting sick of Mages running past people who are either dead or low on HP or something. I'm resting after a long fight as WAR or something solo, and a WHM75 passes me, and stops, then just keeps going. I was in Delkfutt the other day, and this RDM passes me. I ask him for a cure, he rests beside me. After like 2 minutes of resting, he cures me to full, rests again, Protect and Shells me, then gives me Haste. THAT is what Mages should do. I do it all the time. People appreciate little things like that. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. I always stop to cure people or raise people. I even Escape people from dungeons if I'm not in a hurry to power level or party or something.

Anyway, let's hear your opinions to this. See who agrees, who disagrees, who knows who I'm talking about.

Where do I begin. This is like the 129301701750175th post about what mages should be doing.

:: takes a breath::

1. Maybe those WHMs didnt know INT doesnt help them, giving them the benefit of the doubt. White Mages that wear 99% or more of only INT equips to a party need to quit now. I've seen that about 5 times. You WILL NOT BE NUKING with your BLM sub job. You are in that party to heal and buff. I'll have to admit when I'm on my WHM I will Magic Burst with Banish III for the sake of dmg and raising my shitty Divine Magic skill but I only truly do that during an EXP party with a NIN tank cause I dont have to focus on curing that much. Just Haste and Regen and a few Curagas.

2. On my RDM, my refresh cycle is usually, RDM, PLD, WHM, BLM, DRK. Where you got that cycle from beats the hell out of me. This is the cycle other RDMs have given me to use.

3. Not to sound heartless but no mage in this game is obligated to Raise you or cure you if they see you dead, but you're right it's the nice and right thing to do if they can do it. I've been in parties where I"ve seen lots of dead ppl and my party leader told me not to do it cause 1 it was too dangerous for me to do it cause of magic aggro and sight aggro and we didnt have time for me to stop cause I need to be on the bird for where we were going and it would otherwise take forever by foot. Yall know me I throw Cures everywhere and Raise all the time if I see you.

4. MND, that a debatable topic, I dont care about MND unless I"m RDM, that's what effect enfeebling I hear. My MP is what I care about on WHM.

5. Dont hate on Elvaan BLMs. I know serveral really good Elvaan BLMs (ex. Crosis, Heilger, Caerloc, Calbrone, Aldiel, Emperordragon) With the right equipment Elvaan BLMs are formitable in EXP parties. I'm a Hume BLM myself, I have more MP that Elvaan BLMs but I've been i parties where they had better gear than mine and outdamaged me by a few 20-30 points. Now as far as that Elvaan BLM Passions mentioned casting Thundaga II and Burst, that's just plain stupid. 3 Pages worth of spells in the BradyGames guide and that's all she's casting? that's dumb.

Have a nice day ! :D

So... you said you were pissed off at my rant, yet you basically agreed with everything I said.

On a completely unrelated topic, what do you Americans do for your "Veterans' Day"?

On Veteran's Day (today) I 1. Celebrate my puppy's birthday. 2. Go to Denver to
a soup kitchen specifically for Vet's and help out..most ppl do nothing =/ it's pretty f'ed up and sad.

My mage rant - cast a fucking invis on someone besides yourself once in awhile. I understand when your in a room surrounded by mobs you can't drop you invis, but 90% of the mages i travel anywhere with (usually to a camp) REFUSE to cast sneak/invis. Now I'm all for bringing your own oils/powders, which I do...but when your in a tunnle with no mobs anywhere around at the time, take 15 second and save me a few gil you lazy.....[censored] ...this is not toward all mages, just some.....you know who you are -.-

I'm a mage and i rarely use those spells. they wear to damn quickly so if you think when i use a oil and a powder myself i'm going to cast sneak vis on you, you can think again. If its a short trip i'll help others out and myself, but i'm not sneaking you across a whole zone when i use oils myself

Wow, thanks for the Remembrance Day spirit, man.
And I also agree with the Sneak/Invis thing. The Mages should use those spells on their party members as long as they don't have Sneak, Invis, or Tonko. Prism Powder and Silent Oils aren't overly cheap, guys. Give your melee friends a break. (This also gets them to KNOW that us Mages rock their world, hehe ^^)

Ya, it just seemed like this appeared to be very anti-mages.

But yes, a lot of people are speed levelling the mage job lately. All these bad mages just keep popping up.. :(

This isn't anti-mages, trust me. I'm a mage. Why would I be against myself? I'm flaming all the noob Mages who think they're the best because they got their job to Lv50 in a week from spam-leveling. Then they don't know what they're doing.

Personally all these n00b mages spurting up either don't care or don't research. I'm sorry, but there's no excuse. Before I level ANY job, I thoroughly research it to know everything possible to be perfectly effective. And money making for mages to have effective equipment is as easy as a good BCNM with some friends :D

I must admit, a good 15~30 minuites browsing the job forums on killing ifrit is enough to school you to the ways of a low level job, aswell as some of the trials and tribulations that high end players have with their chosen job. Alot of the time I research even the equipment, nms to camp for certain equipments that are better or alot cheaper than the optimal equipments.

And then there are the people that deem themselves to being school'd early on in their FFXI experience, leaving them with a bad taste for such a person, job, or even the game.

The moral of the story: You don't have to be anal about research, but atleast know some of the basics.

PS: http://killingifrit.com/forums.php?c=2 < KillingIfrit Job Forums. USE IT. :P

Amen. I do that all the time. Even when it's for a friend. Now I seem to know enough about most of the game. The stuff I don't know, I just go to Somepage.com for all the info on NM's, zones, items, etc.

lol i remember looking at my strat guide every ten seconds when i first started, and looking up every map in my atlas so i wouldn't get lost :) ah the good old days. now yeah i know most the shit, just go to somepage.com for NEW maps and looking at dream gear :/
i did get really good navigating w/out a game map and going off of a printed map :)

ffxi.allakazam.com or whatever is the job forums i use. lotsa good info and equipment guides and such there.
