Magic: The Gathering

I played heavily when I was younger, but that was way back in 4th edition, the game has changed a ton since then, as I looked at playing again about 3 years ago.

Used to have some really competitive decks, but man was that game fun.

A what? What's EDH and type2? Sorry I'm still a nooblet at this. I do remember him saying something along the lines of he made it out of all newer cards specifically so he could play it in a tourny.

Type2 is a format commonly played for tournaments. Type2 is pretty much the newest 6 sets or so + the core set. So it's limited to what you can play in a deck.

EDH is a special format that is pretty cool. It's 99 cards + your general (so 100 cards total) and you can only have 1 of any card (except basic land cards: Forest, mountain, plains, island, slamp.) And the cards are limited to the colours in your generals casting cost. The general also has to be a legendary creature. There's a banned list, and you can use cards from just about any set.

Competitive playing can be a bit bothersome, as players play to win. If you just want to play for fun, I wouldn't recommend going to a tourny and playing, you'd probably get mauled and feel bad about it. The players can be ruthless, sometimes. But there's always nice ones.

Also, if you do go to an event (like a tourny), make sure you look up the prices of cards. People will try to screw you over pretty quickly. There's a bunch of different sites you can go to, some overpriced, but to get a general idea.

I guess you can say I've really gotten back into the game lol, I do like it.

I played for 10 years nearly ^^

From third edition and the dark expansion all the way to Weatherlight and Invasion, slowed down after that.

Then I stopped, somehow the endless expansions finally took their toll on me, or maybe all my friends found other games to occupy them, I know I lost several to 'Legend of the five rings" and Star trek. Card stores dried up in my areas too, the social interaction of going out to play cards with friends waned when the many meeting places we used to attend all closed down.

I blame video games and the internet. But I do miss it still have most of my old cards. :)

I have about 10000 cards these days. I quit buying them a while ago but I still build decks and play with my friends.

I liked sealed deck tournaments more than anything.

I have an old goblin deck that rocks the house.

Wow, this topic is a blast from the past. I used to play M:TG years ago too, had quite a few cards too.

Sold them all when I graduated from HS as I didn't really have the time/money to devote to it any more like I used to.

I remember I got around 3k dollars for all my cards, lol.

i started playin about 3 yrs ago when a few guys at work brought some decks in. i had 2 decks i used to use, a green deck and then a black and blue deck. my black deck was pretty good against the people i was playin with at work. only lost 2-3 times with it. but i havent played in over a yr.

Has anyone tried the online version, you get virtual cards you can play and trade even, somehow not having those bits of cardboard in my hands would seem weird though. :)

Marajade linked a free one once. or i think it was him. maybe it was sneaky. i always get those two mithra confuzzled.
The "official" one isn't the only one. This is the internet era. No matter what you are looking for there is probably something about it on the internet if it's possible for even one guy to make it.

Yu-gi-oh! is where it's at. I stopped playing a long time ago though.

Oh I see...you'd have to destroy that card before you can win. That is a bitch.

So I made two decks of my very own this week. Mara gave me a big fat box of cards to work with. I made a black/red and a green/blue that aren't too shabby if I do say so myself (I can deal 7 damage with a flying/trample/vigilance on my third turn if I draw the right two cards).

They wouldn't stand a chance in a tournament, but they hold up against my brother(who also made a couple decks so we could play against each other).

My friends were obsessed with magic cards, and I played a little bit cause it's what they were doing but I always fucking hated it and the underlying concept. It's like playing one of the MMORPGs where instead of a subscription fee they charge you for in game items/money.

You hate the idea that they release new cards every 3 months that they want you to buy?

i haven't played in like a decade. but i still have all my cards from back then. wonder if i can get some money for them?

Rock on my goblin brother!

Red/Black Goblins.

4 Warchiefs
4 Piledrivers
4 Siege-gang commanders
4 Sharpshooters
4 Sledders
4 Skirk Prospectors
4 Patriarch's Bidding
2 Cover of Darkness
2 Savage Beating.

Best experience ever was swinging with 3 Hasted Piledrivers and a Warchief on turn 3.
Mmm, 3 7/2 Goblins smacking at once.

I feel the framework for the game, the way cards are balanced and the way they're distributed is exploitative of the playerbase. The balance of any game is affected by how much money the competing players spend. I don't take issue with the online PC versions where everyone has equal grounding to build a deck, but as a ten year old I was able to smell bullshit with regular game... wish I knew why so many people can't.
