Man who gives a fuck what game gets Game of the Year. Most of the time, it's nowhere near the best game. Very rarely is it even a game that people would consider playing a few years down the line. I mean, Gears of War is a great game and all, but do any of you suspect when we got PS4 and Xbox 3 that we're gonna be talking about Gears of War? and don't say only RPGs hold up - I still play Timesplitters sometimes, and I still play the original MGSs, and I still play Mario Bros and Sonic, Original Smash, ext.
It's often the game that gets all the attention based on technology or some new gameplay dynamic, or both, rather than having solid gameplay mechanics that gets everyone's respect at the end of the year, even though games will come along... always, that look better, and incorporate the advancements with better gameplay.
Also I've mentioned Spore is the only PC game I'm buying this year, assuming Starcraft 2 doesn't come out. I've been mildly excited about it for a long time, but I don't see how it's gonna be the best thing ever, just don't understand the huge hype. It's different though, I give it credit for that. Not another shooter, racing game that's identical to 10 other racing games, or cookie cutter RPG. To me it's barely even a game though, more of a simulation that will keep me interested hopefully for more than an hour.
As for Gears and Resistance... will see, they have to really deliver to top MSG4, and I don't know if they're gonna be able. Nobody can say without the games in their hand, but if they're not much except their originals with better graphics and more characters on screen... they won't top MSG4.
