Metal Gear Solid Movie

Spirits within failed because it was called a Final Fantasy movie when it had nothing to do with Final Fantasy. I remember all the drama that movie caused back in the day too. No one was happy about that movie.

Spirits Within sucked, plain and simple.

Most of the plot development from AC started in the game. Safe to assume that you or anyone for that matter, played the game before watching AC. You don't need plot development in the movie because every characters background and story was already explained in the game.

You could argue that the movie started in medias res. You want plot development? Play the game, then watch the movie.

Maybe you should try reading. I said it wasn't a flop. A success in money does indeed mean it wasn't a flop.

And as for spirits within being better, lol@u. Thats all. Advent Children was made to be eye candy, it served its purpose. I was fine with it.

as purely a movie, yes TSW was a far better movie than AC >.> I know AC was pure fan service and that kinda pisses me off.. I know they coulda done so much better.. sure the movie mighta been a bit longer but who cares? No one minds a 3 hour movie these days. AC had NO DEVELOPMENT FOR EVEN NEW CHARACTERS THAT WERE NEVER IN THE GAME!!!! >.> that's what will pisses me off... I'm fine with very little to no character development for reoccuring characters.. just enough to maybe explain what they've been up to and how they are, they did that somewhat but for new characters? meh...

When I watch a movie I look at it from clearly a movie... TSW was far more entertaining, ignore the fact it had Final Fantasy for a second, let your fanboyism for FF aside, and look at it as just a movie.. what's bad about it? Seriously? The characters were pretty cool, the story was interesting, the development was well done, the graphics were great, the acting was great (James Woods ftw!!)... as a movie, TSW is better than AC. As fan service, AC is better than TSW.

I think TSW did have some elements previous FFs did but at the same time not enough that it should have had FF as its title (after all, where were the crystals/orbs that play an importance in the story/world? :P)

That statement makes no sense.

I'm not a fanboy for FF. If I were, I'd love the movie because it had "Final Fantasy" in the title. It does and it still sucks.

tldr; shitsux

What he said.

I still think Advent Children sucked. But so did Spirits Within. The only thing that Spirits Within had to do with Final Fantasy was there was a guy named Cid. And Advent Children, sure it was pretty, but plot holes and irrelevant information up the wazoo in that movie. SE should stick to games.

Define what has to be contained to have something to do with "Final Fantasy." Because honestly, Final Fantasy has nothing to do with Final Fantasy, since theres virtually no set definitions within the series. MATERIA?! Thats not Final Fantasy. JUNCTION?! Thats not Final Fantasy. LEARNING SKILLS THROUGH A HAT?! Thats not Final Fantasy. SPHERE GRID?! Thats not Final Fantasy. PLAYING DRESS UP?! Thats not Final Fantasy. MULTIPLAYER ONLINE?! Thats not Final Fantasy. MULTIPLAYER WITH BOTS?! Thats not Final Fantasy.

I hope you see where I'm going. The only common link between every installment in the franchise is that multiple people save the world from aliens/evil kingdoms/a safari hunter/emo fags. Which Spirits Within most certainly had. It failed because it just wasn't good.

I think he wanted a movie based on an already FF game like Advent Children one.

Actually, I meant that a FF movie should have FF staples. Moogle, Chocobo, Airship, Cid, and w/e else I'm missing. All that movie had in terms of FF was Cid. Don't get me wrong. It was a terrible movie with or without the FF name. It just didn't help.

I just find that most fanboys find it bad because they were expecting something like FF7/8/9 or so and it didn't have much of what makes a FF a FF and so the fanboys were pissed. Didn't have crystals, summons, chocobos (other than that one that was hiddenly stitched in her clothes). It DID have airships :P

I still want to know how people think it was a terrible movie if you ignore the FF part. Music was fine, action was fine, story was fine, characters were fine. There was more development in story and characters than most movies out these days even >.> fucking pisses me off... but more and more movies are more on the setting/feeling (horror) or just about the action... so the plot and characters always fall short :|

All FF do have some few key things in common. FF's generally deal with a crystal/orb in some (I think only two in the entire series didn't have a sphere/orb/crystal dealing with the characters/plot in some way). There's Cid, chocobos, moogles, a greater evil that's always behind the thing you think is evil, and a few other key elements. Gametrailers last Retrospective for FF has all this crap about it :P go watch it.

No, not all of them. Moogles didn't pop up until 3. They weren't in 4, or physically in 7, 8 or 10(videogame/cards/dolls what?) Chocobos were also not around in the first few games. Crystals had been absent from 6 to 8. I'm not sure about 10 or 10-2, since I never touched them.

No Crystals or Moogles in Tactics. Though they are in Tactics Advance.

Chocobos were in FF2 :P and then every game from that. Moogles have become a norm of FF since V even if they were nothing more than a doll. And the espers became crystal like things when they "died". Sphere in X and X-2 so orbs...since I believe originally they were the "4 orbs" :P so orbs/crystals/spheres.. basically magical spherical or crystal things that are important in the majority of the FF series. There are a few features that run common :P but ya, not too many. And Moogles are mentioned in tactics, but mentioned to be extinct. And I coulda sworn there were something Crystal-y in Tactics but hmm.... in FFXII the summons came from crystal thingies and the magicite has similar story to crystals soo... ya. I know every FF doesn't have chocobos, moogles, crystals but the majority do soo :P but ya, the most thing that is similar to FFs are the great evil thingy and the gameplay.

Ele, the fact of the matter is. Spirits within sucked, and whatever you may think of Advent Children, it was more enjoyable than the former.

Every FF game has had fighting with swords and magic.

The culture is always thematically that of a world that's less industrialized, less infrastructure but with technology that progressed differently, either with the use of magic, fictional animals or simply advancing old technology along further.

Thematically it's been about saving the world.

Moogles, Chocobo, Airships, Summons, Red Mages, Boats, ext... not in every game, but they all have some of that.

The movie felt completely disjointed from any "Final Fantasy" type experience, and with the expectation of that, it led to a disappointment.

I believe the idea that FF fans would hate the movie more because of the FF name, that's true. Myself, I finished the movie baffled, not because the movie was bad in its own right (it wasn't bad... just not good...), it gave me expectations that it didn't follow through with.

Like a James Bond movie that's a romantic comedy. Maybe it would be a movie I'd have liked...but going in for James Bond, I'm gonna be pissed.

As for Advent Children... my biggest problem with it is that it establishes the ending. I felt that the ending was left in the air, with a strong hinting that the lifestream had eliminated the humans. Instead they bring it back, and for something's that's entirely pointless... I dunno.

I mean... it's still cool and all. It's like watching most anime. There's no plot that's worth shit, but it's cool fighting. It's like a big fantasy.

In general, the big problem with games to movie translations is that nobody puts any real effort into them, and that the medium translates badly.

I mean... a Metal Gear Solid movie COULD work, but in reality it would need to be 5 movies to translate a Metal Gear Solid experience. Same goes for a Final Fantasy movie... you can't make FF7 or FF10 into a 2-3 hour movie. Every game would require a 3 movie Lord of the Rings treatment to be the FF quality we'd expect as fans.

On top of that, the plot only makes sense in the contexts of the games. The relative strength of the characters change greatly as the game moves on, and such a leap wouldn't be possible in a movie setting. The characters hit 1000 times harder and are 1000 times tougher by the end of the game, and that means they had ordinary strength and went on to fighting giant robots with their bare hands and fighting people able to blow up cities. Character's relative strength, what level the plot expects you to be... effects how things play out in the story.

I do think Ratchet and Clank could be a decent Pixar movie, though it wouldn't be a Pixar quality story as it's not deep enough thematically.

Suikoden would be a good 5 part 2 hour each miniseries. Same goes to Tales of the Abyss.

Ninja Gaiden would make an exciting 2 hour blood bath with no plot.

I have to play more, but Rogue Galaxy might be a good movie if they just took the idea and did it kind of like Firefly.

Retconning doesn't count. Tactics came out years before 12, and there were no crystals.

Also, it turns out that there were instances of chocobos in Spirits Within, in the form of two logos. That beats Advent Children's single reference to chocobos on a sign.

I still don't get why people think Spirits Within was a bad movie >.> no one's really given me a reason other than "it was bad" ya.. but WHY? What was bad about it? Plot was bad? how? Characters were bad? How? Development of character and/or plot was bad? How? Voice acting was bad? How? >.>

Let me put this into terms you might be able to understand:

It is all just your opinion >.> You thought the movie was good <.< Other people think the movie is bad <.> It's all just XD a difference of opi -_- nion. Unfortunately >.< the majority of opinions here agree that Spirits Within was a bad movie :| >.> <.<

pfft, I'm going with fanboyism let down for why most think it was bad cause that seems to be the reason for all even if they don't admit it.

I never found it bad. It just wasn't good. Certainly not worth the production costs. It was a pretty run of the mill sci-fi flick. Steve Buscemi being in it was probably the best part. Alec Baldwin being in it was probably the worst part.

You make absolutely no sense. If you were a fanboy, you would love the movie just because it had "Final Fantasy" in it. If none of us like it because it's not a good movie, it's not because we're fanboys. It's because we know a bad movie when we see one.
