This is amazing footage, I don't have a whole lot to say on the subject rather than to watch the video.

The sky lights completely up for a split second, as if it's day time. Crazy.

By the way, this was filmed in Alberta, Canada. The meteorite is expected to have crashed in AFRICA

Geez. Hope it didn't cause too much damage when it landed. That looks pretty cool though. Kind of a fluke that a camera was running.

Oh yeah this was all over the radio the morning after. Local stations were reporting a UFO lol, asking that anyone who knew what had actually occured should contact local autorities as they had no leads yet.

Awesome stuff!! Hope no one got hurt o.O

Yeah, that's probably the best vid of it. Believe that was off a police dash cam.
Was in Edmonton, afaik, where the vid was recorded.

So... has Africa (where its assumed it landed) reported any large craters or sites that look as if an atomic bomb hit? Or 12? I haven't heard anything about this, I would assume it would've been on some sort of world news program. I watched the associated clips after that one was over and it seems there was some serious documentation on that.

Odds are with such a huge flash it burnt up in the atmosphere during descent but damn was that cool looking >_>

Edit: I went to MSN to try to look something up about it and its on damn the front page. Doesn't say anything in the article about it possibly landing in Africa. Odds are something of that size hitting Africa and being seen from Canada would basically mean bye-bye-birdie for the rest of us.

I doubt it was even remotely the size of an atomic bomb crater to be honest. You would need a very massive meteorite to create such a crater, of which would cause a mass-extinction event. We'd be dead if it was the size of an atomic bomb, in other words.

The flash of light was the friction of the atmosphere burning away the meteorite at such a high rate, thus yielding heat and light release. Interesting enough, I highly doubt it hit the ground, let alone actually causing any damage if it did make landfall.

You have to remember that these objects are moving at incredible speeds. For instance, space shuttles exceed 18,000 mph, which is extremely fast. So depending on the angle, the meteorite could have easily gone through Canadian skies and slammed into Africa at a very horizontal-heavy angle.

I don't recall it being reported that it landed in Africa? I thought it landed somewhere outside Lloydminster (Alberta/Saskatchewan border)? Anyway the footage above was caught in Edmonton (about 3 hours north of Calgary). Really cool stuff :)

I read that it probably broke into pieces and landed east of Edmonton, near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

What I was inferring was that if something, looking that size to the naked eye, went all the way to Africa and made landfall, we'd all be fucking dead. It is possible for a meteorite to create a huge enough crater that it would look like the scene of an atomic bomb. Look at the United States and the Great Basin area. That shit is way old, desert and the planet is still intact. Weird, huh?

Which is why I said "burnt up in the atmosphere". I never once mentioned anything about landfall. I assumed "burnt up" communicated the finalistic tones that I meant it to. Obviously not. However, considering the article on MSN stated that people felt their houses shake as if "dinosaurs were walking", I guess we're both wrong and it didn't burn up in the atmosphere and made landfall.

I dont have to remember, I already know. You also have to remember that the shuttles descent isn't straight, as this meteorites nearly was. It goes with the rotation of the earth after orbit and begins descent, as you said, at a nearly horizontal angle. Also, their speed is extremely slow compared to that of the meteroite on the video, almost like they're coasting in. That meteorite fell into earth like a fat kid slipping off of a diving board at the pool. Two completely different impacts. One controlled and skidding, the other high impact and explosive. The crater may not be extensive, even in the video you saw it breaking up the closer it got to flight level. I saw two distinct pieces just before molten glow cooled down. But, people stating that they felt tremors like "dinosaurs walking" is a pretty good assumption in itself that hard impact occured and there are going to be some marks left.

:dur: Couldn't resist

lol.

I knew what you meant Morwen. Kinda like in the Simpsons when a meteorite burns down to the size of a "chihuahua's head". Anything that can be seen from Canada that crashes in Africa has to be pretty huge. But yea, it landed in Alberta. Did it hit a moose or land in a farmers field?

lol.

Probably landed on a Calgary Flames fan.

I kid, I kid.

It's Lavos, and he burrowed into the Earth and is awaiting the Day of Lavos, 2012 AD.

nobody read my post D:

I read somewhere that it landed around lloydminster!

That's an awesome video! I wish it were longer.

Who cares if it hits an Oiler or Flames fan? As long as it doesn't hit a Wings fan it's all good. ;D
