"Michael Moore yesterday lashed out at US authorities for investigating the Cuban chapter of his Sicko, Moore's healthcare exposé which opened in Cannes last month. The documentary features footage of Moore travelling to Cuba with September 11 aid workers.

During a press conference in New York, the Fahrenheit 9/11 director said the US Treasury's investigation, which is looking into whether Moore broke a 45-year-old US trade embargo on Cuba, is "a form of harassment".

"We are going to fight this and we are going to be very aggressive to find who is behind this," said Moore.

The trip was legal because it was a "journalistic endeavour", authorised under the embargo law, argued Moore's lawyer. "This is not about Cuba and it is not about whether you like Castro or not," said David Boies. "This is about freedom of the press and an attempt to discriminate against Michael Moore's journalism." At the centre of the storm is a 15-minute section of Sicko, a film on the problems of the US healthcare system, which shows Moore attempting to reach the Guantanamo Bay detention camp to make the point that suspected al-Qaida detainees were getting better health-care treatment than three ailing September 11 rescue workers onboard with him. The director then goes to Cuba to seek treatment for the workers and to film Cuba's healthcare system. Moore said he was "concerned about what the Bush administration might do over the next couple of weeks. "I would have thought they would have waited until long after the film had been released to go after me," he said, adding that he sent a copy of the film to Canada to prevent possible attempts by US authorities to seize the film.

Asked whether the controversy was conveniently well-timed to tie in with the release of the film, due in the US on June 29, Moore answered: "(producers) Bob and Harvey (Weinstein) actually did call Mr Bush and ask him to start investigating me. "I knew they were tight with the Clintons, but this showed the amount of influence these men have. All in this room should fear them," he said.

On a more serious note, Moore said that they didn't ask for the controversy. "We were going to open this movie very quietly," he said. "We're not talking here about a movie or the opening or promotion of a movie. We're talking about an individual being threatened and I take that very seriously."

Good for the 9/11 victims - they deserve better treatment than the shit healthcare they receive in this country. Goes to show this administration is all talk when it comes to looking out for their own. Reminds me of the hospitals in DC that were brought up in the news not too long ago for unsanitary conditions, housing our troops brought back from Iraq.

I hate this guy. Watching him get blown up in Team America was one of the best 3 seconds of any movie I've ever seen.

This past weekend I had an infection on my foot and I went 4 miles from where I live, visited a doctor I've never seen before and was out the door in 45 minutes with my prescription. Canadians come here for organ transplants. We have the best health care in the world here, so I don't know where you're coming from.

Or maybe you just wanted to complain about George Bush.

Michael Moore makes some of the most poorly made documentaries i have ever seen.

Farenheit 9/11 was made by a 12 year old I swear, this fat ass needs to stop making movies and go lose weight on the MCDONALDS diet.

For extremely rare or difficult transplants, maybe. Doctors undoubtedly make more in the USA than they would in Canada, so the most skilled or educated ones will be there. Otherwise... your hospitals have the same access to the same hardware ours do.

I'm sure there's some experimental / rare hardware down there that exists due to better funding though that we don't have. The same could be reversed. It was, after all, in Edmonton that they discovered a method to kill cancer cells.

I've heard a few Americans express their envy for Canada's healthcare system.

i have a friend and his wife who are pretty much just sitting back waiting to do because they cannot afford healthcare and job and family services says they make too much when they really dont.
he needs a liver transplant, she had some surgery too.
there have been many bands holding benefit concerts for them.
Not to mention my eye injuries that my healthcare is being a bitch about, i cant see a doctor till next month, i needed it 2 years ago.
its far from good here.

i ripped a 2 inch hole in my knee and got it stiched up in 20 minutes... cost all but $100 for the deductable.

Good health insurance is what everyone needs.

If you have money and/or good insurance USA > Canada.

If you have no money and no insurance Canada > USA.

That's just like, your opinion man. I'm sure the people who dug up the remains of victims of 9/11 who are now dying from serving their country mainly from receiving shoddy health care aren't agreeing with you. Or the poor. Or the immigrants who have fled oppression from the middle east. Or the.. you get the idea. I'm no expert, but our country's health care is far from what it could be. This Administration has been looking for a war so much it's neglected to look after the people within its own borders. Is it a coincidence then that the moment someone uncovers something potentially revealing about how shoddy the health care is the Administration tries to shoot him down?

Edit* speaking from personal experience, living in Manhattan, the last time I was sick the soonest appointment I could have with a doctor was 2 weeks. By that time I was better, but the "what if" sometimes still bothers me.

If you really do feel it is so bad that it can't wait 2 weeks remeber we have ERs and Urgent Care centers too.

No dig on Canada, by any means. My slant was that Canada is a first rate nation, and still people come to the US for procedures. Saying, "People come to the US from Kenya for surgery" wouldn't have had the same effect. ;)

Pretty much. The US system is good at hitting medical home runs. Healthcare is just something on the side that yeah sure...we do that too. If you want a trans-sphenoidal resection of a pituitary adenoma, we're your best bet. If you want healthcare and not healthsaves, though, you'd better have insurance. Otherwise, get sicker and come back when you make a better case report so we can knock you out of the ballpark at the last second. Or strike out, but w/e! We swing for the fences.

Props to him for trying to highlight the US's lower-tier healthcare problems, but we have the 4 dollar a month WalMart prescription plan now. Step off, Moore!

I wasn't trying to sound rude either, sorry if I came off that way.

I have to laugh at anyone stupid enough to listen to Micheal Moore, I'll bet he purposefully violated the embargo just to drum up publicity; I'd never even heard of this movie before now. Crookedmidget is right, we have the best health care in the world, it's just not free like in other countries, but that's also why it's the best. Our hospitals buy the best equipment and hire the best doctors, but then they have to charge more to pay for those things, it's that simple. Just because someone doesn't have insurance or can't pay the fees does not in any way diminish the quality of care. Canada's health care is good, especially for being government run/funded, but price is the only advantage their system has.

Oh, and if you had something seriously wrong with you and you wait 2 weeks to go to your normal doctor rather than an emergency room, you're an idiot.

Meh, this is the first i've heard of a new Moore flic. I'm not necessarily a fan, but i dont hate on the guy. His documentaries all have their moments...

yuuuuup.

For some reason I have this vision of Michael Moore, self-proclaimed hero of the working classes, sitting around his palatial mansion eating fried suckling pig dipped in buttered lard and wondering how he might drum up interest in his latest offering to the unwashed masses...

Has anyone ever actually payed ATTENTION to what this asshole does? Really? HE EXPLOITS THE IGNORANCE OF HIS VIEWERS. I'm tempted to bold that and bump up the font to immense proportions to emphasize it even further. He doesn't make documentaries. He doesn't do journalism. He picks a conclusion, then hammers away at the available information until he warps it enough to fit. And then he puts it on the big screen, almost invariably with some sort of accusation that "someone" has tried to silence him, and dipshits with liberal arts degrees eat it up with a fucking spoon, in between writing their local congressman about the perils of the spotted owl and smoking whatever disgusting filth they prefer to pollute the atmosphere with.

I HATE Michael Moore. I hate him in ways that are impossible to describe in the English language. I'd have to make up new words for the precise flavor of hate I feel at any given time of the day. In a week, we'd wind up with the equivalent of "Snow" in Inuit, or "lava" in Hawaiian. There'd be 150 words for hate, and I'd feel all of them for Michael Moore. I've hated him since a week after he released his FIRST film, and that hate has only deepened and intensified with each vacuous, insipid, misleading and downright untruthful "documentary" he's released since.

In a perfect world, I'd get to see Michael Moore slowly torn apart by assembly line robots as members of the NRA repeatedly shot him in the testicles.

Yep. It's unfortunately brilliant. He's found a way to make millions while being praised by the lower class... and I refer to the "lower class" in terms of intellect and general open-mindedness, rather than social/financial standing.

edit: not meaning to bash on anyone who enjoys his films. To me they just seem very bigoted, one-sided, and filled with his holier-than-thou aura that just screams "support me so I can make more money off you!".
