Michael Moore's "Sicko"

I've heard a few Americans express their envy for Canada's healthcare system.

If you lack health insurance or a means to get good coverage, or you want access to experimental meds that take FOREVER to be passed by the FDA then yes.

Issue with American health care is the expense involved because of insurance premiums. That stuff is MAD expensive for doctors, cant remember the numbers and anesthesiologist needs to pay per month but its frigging retarded. What we get is a logical chain of events.

Cause: People are sue happy on medical malpractice:
Result: insurance rates on doctors go up.

Cause: Insurance rates for medical malpractice through the roof.
Result: Doctors charge more.

Now if you have health insurance they cover the cost except for the copay. If you lack health insurance you are fucked.

I don't like the concept of socialized health care because that money just comes out of the taxes. So in the end you still pay for it you just don't see where, and people who make more money of course shoulder more of the burden. If it was a flat tax rate that would be fine, but of course the increase in taxes as you make more money is just a pain in the ass. Works out nice if you could not afford or get health insurance if you where in a place like USA. Also leads to hospitals being overcrowded with hypochondriacs.

I would rather deal with my health care on a personal level, cause when it gets down to it I don't want to help shoulder the burden of your crack baby's lord knows how expensive dollar operation. Your crack baby your problem you deal with it.

Now to address the problem at hand with Moore's trip to Cuba. He is an idiot if he thought the government would not look into it especially if you flaunt it and make money off it. You went to frigging Cuba, the man is not that stupid if he did not realize that would be a big deal. Arnold the governator got investigated cause a picture surfaced with him smoking a Cuban cigar in Canadia.

The thing that anoys me about this is how people are still screaming about the 9/11 victims 6 years latter. Moore is using them to make money. Bad things happen to people all the time. I myself feel bad for all the families who lost a loved one I been there I done that. My father died when I was four. That being said, no one was out conducting a fund raiser for me and my family, or the hundreds of MILLIONS of other people like me. What makes their grief so much more special then all the other people who have bad things happen to them.

Anisthesiologists and OB/GYN have some of the highest rates for medical malpractice insurance, it's somewhere in the ballpark of $150,000 a year to pay for their insurance. This is a REQUIRED expense as well- no hospital in the US will let you in the door if you don't already have malpractice insurance. Even the lowly Podiatrists pay in the range of $50,000 a year for their malpractice insurance, and they're just dealing with feet for christs's sake.

Also, the irony is, the reason health care costs so much is in part because of Medicare and private insurance. Most people don't know this, but the amount that doctors are paid for their work by Medicare is set by government mandate. Uncle Sam will only pay X amount for Y procedure, regardless of how much it actually costs to do. Most insurance companies base they pay scale on the Medicare reimbusement, never paying more than 20% over what Medicare will pay (and sometimes less than Medicare). On top of that, you have the fact that only 75% of the claims doctors actually submit on average will actually be approved, the rest are denied for frivolous reasons (i.e. you didn't dot your t's and cross your i's).

Doctors still have to cover their overhead. They have to pay rent on their office, malpractice insurance, buy supplies, pay the electric bill, and hire office staff to organize appointments and navigate the labyrinth of Medicare reibursement claims. What this means is that they have to fit in as many patients as they possibly can in as short a time as possible just to turn a profit, so quality of care suffers in that regard.

The thing with state-funded healthcare, is that people look at it as "free" healthcare. That is NOT what it is, you should all be old enough to know that nothing is ever free. What is is in actuality is the government forcing you to buy their health insurance plan, with no choice in the matter. You WILL pay for it, only instead of seeing it taken out of your paycheck every 2 weeks you'll get hit with the bill on your 1040. It doesn't matter if you're a perfectly healthy individual who only needs minimal insurance for emergencies, you're going to be paying the same amount as the 60-year-old obese alcoholic smoker with diabetes, cirrhosis, and lung cancer. And while your tax bill goes up, quality of care will drop even more; more people will be taking advantage of their "free" health care to have the doctor take a look at the twinge in their knees or that tiny mole on their arm, and you'll have to wait in line behind them to get your life-saving meds.

Thank you someone who remembers the very first thing we learn in economics. There is no such thing as a free lunch. The freeness in the services in socialized systems is an illusion people buy into. The difference is in a socialist economy they force those not partaking in a certain service to also pay. Really great if you have no money and want to take advantage of the prosperity of others. Not if you know are the type of person who, you know, actualy make your own money. Compared to needing the government to arm wrestle handouts from those who do have some.

I dont think it is just Moore who is lobbying the cause, and i do believe the issue isn't concerning the victims, but rather the rescue workers who inhaled all the debri and ashes of burning people, and the lackluster care they recieved after. And for what its worth, my condolences. /bow

If you have money and/or good insurance USA > Canada.

If you have no money and no insurance Canada > USA.

That pretty much sums it up. There are situations where there are just shitty hospitals, but our media being what it is, makes it seem more frequent than it really is. The US is a huge country, it can't be all that surprising that people hear more about our hospitals than else where's when we have so many. Other places can do it better, but when you have thousands of hospitals to try and pull individual horror stories from, you are gonna find alot. Often times they are the same story being circulated in one area as well.

My friend's buddy had this happen...
My brother had this happen...
My boyfriend had this happen...
My son had this happen...
My grandson had this happen...
My nephew had this happen...
My buddy's nephew/son/boyfriend/grandson had this happen...

You get the picture. Only 1 person needs to have something happen to have 50 other people hear about it, then have them tell 10 of their friends each without saying the exact name because they don't think the person they're talking to knows them. All of a sudden you may hear 10 horror stories about 1 hospital and you start looking for problems the next time you go or hear about something in the news. Its a bad cycle. Things aren't really that horrible, if you actually give the situation the perspective it should have.

Theres so much ammo against Bush and his administration, and THIS is what he makes an entire movie about? My god, what an idiot. I hope to god people don't actually pay money to see this crap.
